song reminds me of Cathy Dennis' "Too Many Walls."

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:02 (eleven years ago)

i'm guessing that j lo's vocals had nothing to do with why "i luh you papi" placed on this poll, but just hearing it for the first time and holy jesus her voice - minimal to begin with - has not aged well. the beat is solid but otherwise woooooooof

i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:05 (eleven years ago)

I voted for the Shorterz remix.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:05 (eleven years ago)

this performance sold me on "crying for no reason"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:06 (eleven years ago)

not one of my picks off that album though

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:06 (eleven years ago)

i tried with RNT, i really did! a six minute opening track?

Real Nigga Timeline is Migos' worst full-length since they became popular, mostly because they started to misunderstand what makes them good. Like it's way more focused on technical rappity-rapping then it should be, and while their technical skill definitely adds a dimension to them, it's really a secondary part of their appeal. Young Rich Niggas and No Label 2 both had way more catchy songs than RNT, which gets way too bogged down in them trying to prove themselves instead of just letting their chops serve the songs. Actually, my favorite songs on RNT are the 'real shit' songs at the end like "What Y'all Doin'?" and "Struggle".

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:07 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Crying never sounded what its critics said it sounded like to me. Always dug it.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:09 (eleven years ago)

there are some good rappity rap tracks on RNT though... the first 5 or so songs are killer. then at the end it gets good as rev says. the middle is soggy though.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:10 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I'm not saying it's all bad, just not what they're best at.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:11 (eleven years ago)

all migos mixtapes since YRN are imperfect though ... RNT has about as many good songs as 'no label II' imo they're just good in a diff way

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:12 (eleven years ago)

i do quite like "crying for no reason" but it felt too soon for katy to sink to radio 2 territory. especially when she should have been getting back to back number ones in a chart landscape filled with commercial pop house that she use to do so well.

prolego, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:13 (eleven years ago)

is she gonna put out another single? "everything" should totally be one

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:13 (eleven years ago)

the success of commercial pop house weirdly almost requires that its performers be ~as anonymous as she was back when she broke w/ "katy on a mission"

dyl, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:14 (eleven years ago)

having "still" be the next single was the dumbest decision ever lol

dyl, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:14 (eleven years ago)

I never felt like she was anonymous until this year!

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:16 (eleven years ago)

the campaign ended when "still" completely bombed. it was a ridiculous choice for a follow up single when she finally had momentum, but then i expected nothing less when her team couldn't even make the correct decisions on what should go on the standard version of the album.

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:17 (eleven years ago)

I loved this for about a week but I'm happy to see it.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:18 (eleven years ago)

on the real tho the entire singles campaign was fucked up, that "crying for no reason" got that high was probably a miracle if you consider what came before it

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:18 (eleven years ago)

"loved for about a week" is right

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:18 (eleven years ago)

and i don't understand why she released the danger ep when "aaliyah" and "got paid" could've been huge lead singles for the album proper. oh well.

prolego, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:19 (eleven years ago)

i get why people like "on the regular" but it's a bit too precious & cute for me

it's basically tuneyards r&b

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:19 (eleven years ago)

when it briefly turns into a ballad tho it gets real good

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:19 (eleven years ago)

it's basically tuneyards r&b

so otm

example (crüt), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:20 (eleven years ago)

This song is ok, thought so the first time I heard it and will probably think so this time next year. I've only heard it 4 or 5 times, though.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:20 (eleven years ago)

Shamir is one of those people who are just this close to something I would unreservedly love but somehow manage to get it completely wrong.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:21 (eleven years ago)

oh shit and J0rdan nailed it in the xposts.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:21 (eleven years ago)

i think shamir has so much potential and i am really excited to see what he does but i don't love this track as much as i want to, the raps are kinda wooden. i like his ep.

dyl, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:21 (eleven years ago)

a lot of these made my original cut to about 100 but not the final 25 - this included

cool song

nxd, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:21 (eleven years ago)

definitely but i meant more in the sing-y sense, i mean you have guys like z-ro and nate dogg who were doing the singy raps but were decidedly more gangster, plus you have gangster rappers who are also emo like pac and scarface, but before kanye and drake who were the emo rap/singers of today like future and quan influenced by, if anyone?

Not sure if they influenced any of those, but this was definitely the first "singy emo rap" act I ever came across:

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:22 (eleven years ago)

it's basically tuneyards r&b

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:23 (eleven years ago)

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:25 (eleven years ago)

nashwan, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:26 (eleven years ago)

Wait when?

Shamir is way closer to bad queer-party electro-house aftertaste than anything I'll publically endorse.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:27 (eleven years ago)

This song kind of made me wonder how the Yelle track did.

campreverb, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:29 (eleven years ago)

This song is ok, thought so the first time I heard it and will probably think so this time next year. I've only heard it 4 or 5 times, though.

― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 4:20 PM (11 minutes ago)

Hold up, the 6th time killed it dead for me. Blech.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:32 (eleven years ago)

hey thx Rev, i'll look into those earlier migos tapes. there were some things on RNT that stuck out but it's all kind of submerged for me at the moment. truth be told: i do a lot of deep listening in the car, and this tape is longer than a standard cd! i had to split it up on two discs and tbh i don't think i played the 2nd half, whoops.

goole, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:33 (eleven years ago)

good song, didn't vote for it

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:34 (eleven years ago)

like 'I Know It's A Good Thing' more than 'On The Regular' anyway

also that HudMo-produced Tiombe Lockhart track in a similar vein (in turn what I'd have wanted the Hercules album to sound more like)

nashwan, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:34 (eleven years ago)

aw related vids shows his cover of "the house that built me" :'(

dyl, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:36 (eleven years ago)

This Shamir tune is okay, definitely better than Tune-Yards one... But between those and some other tunes in this poll, I gotta ask, why does artsy electro/house/pop rap of today always have to sound so goddamn hyperactive, like everyone's eaten three too many boxes of Cheerios? Don't any of these folks smoke weed?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:37 (eleven years ago)

Oh man, I've tried with the last two Hercules albums and both were garbage.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:37 (eleven years ago)

You guys! There's only one more coming today. I hope it makes us all happy, because there were some bad vibes all over this thread today. <3

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:37 (eleven years ago)

the placement of "YRN" is giving me hope for Lifestyle/Stoner/About The Money. really can't wait to see how upset the squares get with multiple Young Thug tracks.
