NICKI MINAJ: “Lookin Ass”: eh ‘sokay. heavy! where did that “dude shouting hey on the beat” thing start? i’d love to see a youtube history of that.

OWEN PALLETT: “Song for Five & Six”: i don’t know this guy’s music very well (hi!). i’m pro arpeggio, all arpeggio everything, so thumbs up

SHAKIRA "Empire": quite a chorus but this is like current-day aerosmith

CARIBOU "Silver": oookay? i like caribou a lot but i’m not sad i didn’t rush out for this one. atp i’m a little mystified how these relatively somber album-cut type tracks are generating this much EOY love

AGAINST ME! "FUCKMYLIFE666": i really hate to not be more open to something so important and true in a year, like any other year, when anti-trans violence has been so pervasive and trans experience has become much more visible in mass media. i just don’t like this kind of rock music.

JENNIFER LOPEZ "I Luh Ya Papi" Ft French Montana. yeah ok. doesn’t seem like much. that’s the point tho, right? it’s so goddam cold here, i’m not really with this right now.

AGAINST ME! "Transgender Dysphoria Blues": see above, but this does hit way harder and i like it a lot more.

NICKI MINAJ "Boss Ass Bitch" ft. PTAF: “aw man slooo down” haha

HAIM - "If I Could Change Your Mind": i was the #1 vote for this. what did i tell you about being 12 mo behind? still better than anything on this list so far.

MIGOS - "YRN" Ft. Young Thug: not that it means anything to the universe but i’m really out of step with rap right now; neither the rappers nor the producers that pop up on the rolling threads or get hyped elsewhere do it for me, the weird-voice mushmouth type stuff and triplet migos flow least of all. i tried with RNT, i really did! a six minute opening track? this is really effortlessly loveable tho! great song! i’ll check that Straye Thugs comp. fine!

ALVVAYS - "Archie, Marry Me": that is a hell of a chorus.

SPOON - "Inside Out": i am now a hater of this band, i guess. koto sounds +, whole deal overall -. just kind of nowhere.

D'ANGELO AND THE VANGUARD "Sugah Daddy": i didn’t even know how to pick anything off of this, didn’t vote for anything.

FKA TWIGS "Pendulum": this is precisely as inert and pointless as the spoon song

definitely but i meant more in the sing-y sense, i mean you have guys like z-ro and nate dogg who were doing the singy raps but were decidedly more gangster, plus you have gangster rappers who are also emo like pac and scarface, but before kanye and drake who were the emo rap/singers of today like future and quan influenced by, if anyone? where do singy pop-rappers like nelly and ja rule fit into this?

maybe z-ro and nate dogg's music should be better described as rappy sings, not singy raps, this is important

aphex makes some really ugly ass boring music, probably not a fair assessment seeing as I haven't listened too him since his drill n bass period, but the prejudice remains and I just know I won't like it.

terje is pleasant enough but ive used up my opinions for the year at this point

making my way through the playlist now, prob will skip stuff i've already heard/like...this rita ora song isn't terrible but mostly bc it's not markedly identifable as rita ora or anybody else really, it's just an ok lacking-in-identity pop song

feel like a lot of the emo rap discrepancies boil down more to generational differences than like musical things or specifically hiphop culture things
