The problem with a lot of sad emo rap isn't that it's not okay for dudes to have emotions, it's that the dudes in question often come across as whiny entitled douches. Not particularly the case with Tuesday admittedly.

i'd really love for someone smart to write a long article looking at the history of emo rap, i'm blanking on who the antecedent emo rappers must be, but i want to know how this whole drake/future/quan etc scene came to be
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:14 (eleven years ago)
what even is a rating, when you think abt it xp
― franklin, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:15 (eleven years ago)
Gotta admit that in the past 12 months I have struggled not to heedlessly clown the phrase "safe space" somehow (ditto "shaming")

I agree the original impulse was to push back against male entitlement, but it feels to me like the brush has gotten a lot broader than that. k3v's post makes me think this is just another thing we can blame on Drake
― rob, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:16 (eleven years ago)
its kanyes fault tho really
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:17 (eleven years ago)
Let's have a social justice clusterfuck in the tracks rollout!

2014 77 TRAX REAX
i’m always about 12 mo behind on all music and i don’t even think i like talking about music on the internet anymore but here goes.
NICKI MINAJ: “Lookin Ass”: eh ‘sokay. heavy! where did that “dude shouting hey on the beat” thing start? i’d love to see a youtube history of that.
OWEN PALLETT: “Song for Five & Six”: i don’t know this guy’s music very well (hi!). i’m pro arpeggio, all arpeggio everything, so thumbs up
TUNE-YARDS: “Water Fountain”: https://twitter.com/RIBSOUT/status/464192649889865728
NINOS DU BRASIL: “Sombra da Lua”: whoa this really smokes. what scene is this? how did this develop any consensus behind it? no idea what the context here is.
KING Mister Chameleon: gorgeous. will admit to not really getting grabbed tho
KATIE GATELY “Pivot”: gorgeous. will admit to kinda skipping through it tho. sounds a little like… Lookin Ass heh
ANA TIJOUX Ft. Shadia Mansour: “Somos Sur”: awesome, glad i got to hear this bcz of the poll
USHER “Good Kisser”: great song. personal note: radio where i live is awful, seems to be getting worse, and i miss hearing songs like this all the time. blanket endorsement from University of Chicago professor and Century Foundation fellow: https://twitter.com/haroldpollack/status/557047130993725440
NICKI MINAJ “Anaconda”: i looove the last minute
DAVIDO "Tchelete" Ft. Mafikizolo: wow, cool. “things that our people do for money,” holy shit. this is the year for pensive, wound-up music huh
RÖYKSOPP & ROBYN "Do It Again": idk why i was sort of rooting for this to be bad but it’s ok
SHAKIRA "Empire": quite a chorus but this is like current-day aerosmith
ST. VINCENT "Prince Johnny": doesn’t do a thing for me
DUKE DUMONT "I Got U" Ft. Jax Jones: not into the vocal but i will always like a tune like this
CARIBOU "Silver": oookay? i like caribou a lot but i’m not sad i didn’t rush out for this one. atp i’m a little mystified how these relatively somber album-cut type tracks are generating this much EOY love
― goole, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:21 (eleven years ago)
i'm blanking on who the antecedent emo rappers must be
Scarface and 2pac.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:22 (eleven years ago)
AGAINST ME! "FUCKMYLIFE666": i really hate to not be more open to something so important and true in a year, like any other year, when anti-trans violence has been so pervasive and trans experience has become much more visible in mass media. i just don’t like this kind of rock music.
HOLLY HERNDON "Chorus": whoa, intense. heavy pressure on headphones! i have to admit i was not expecting it to have an #actual beat
MARK RONSON "Uptown Funk" Ft Bruno Mars: no.
JENNIFER LOPEZ "I Luh Ya Papi" Ft French Montana. yeah ok. doesn’t seem like much. that’s the point tho, right? it’s so goddam cold here, i’m not really with this right now.
AGAINST ME! "Transgender Dysphoria Blues": see above, but this does hit way harder and i like it a lot more.
NICKI MINAJ "Boss Ass Bitch" ft. PTAF: “aw man slooo down” haha
HAIM - "If I Could Change Your Mind": i was the #1 vote for this. what did i tell you about being 12 mo behind? still better than anything on this list so far.
MIGOS - "YRN" Ft. Young Thug: not that it means anything to the universe but i’m really out of step with rap right now; neither the rappers nor the producers that pop up on the rolling threads or get hyped elsewhere do it for me, the weird-voice mushmouth type stuff and triplet migos flow least of all. i tried with RNT, i really did! a six minute opening track? this is really effortlessly loveable tho! great song! i’ll check that Straye Thugs comp. fine!
ALVVAYS - "Archie, Marry Me": that is a hell of a chorus.
SPOON - "Inside Out": i am now a hater of this band, i guess. koto sounds +, whole deal overall -. just kind of nowhere.
D'ANGELO AND THE VANGUARD "Sugah Daddy": i didn’t even know how to pick anything off of this, didn’t vote for anything.
FKA TWIGS "Pendulum": this is precisely as inert and pointless as the spoon song
50 QT: Hey QT: lol fuck off. i love ford & lopatin but come on. do it or don’t.
KATY PERRY "Dark Horse": lol nice pic. it’s pretty crazy to hear a beat like this on the lite pop station they play at the Y, well done katy perry
JESSIE WARE "Champagne Kisses" love it, love her
ILOVEMAKONNEN "Club Going Up On A Tuesday": drifting but engaging, so personal and wistful and hopeful and proud, just a great great song
RITA ORA "I Will Never Let You Down”: are you serious.
APHEX TWIN "Minipops 67 [120.2] (source field mix)" shrug
― goole, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:23 (eleven years ago)

definitely but i meant more in the sing-y sense, i mean you have guys like z-ro and nate dogg who were doing the singy raps but were decidedly more gangster, plus you have gangster rappers who are also emo like pac and scarface, but before kanye and drake who were the emo rap/singers of today like future and quan influenced by, if anyone? where do singy pop-rappers like nelly and ja rule fit into this?
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:26 (eleven years ago)

jk this is probably my favorite of his tracks now, super fun

feel like when people say emo rap they mean at least a few diff streams one of which flows from pac and face but another the kayne drake feeling sorry for myself version does not have too much connection to that in lineage or vibe

cant believe kev and dan are trying to clown me about this emo rap xp im frankly embarrassed for them tbh
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:34 (eleven years ago)
maybe z-ro and nate dogg's music should be better described as rappy sings, not singy raps, this is important
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:35 (eleven years ago)
aphex makes some really ugly ass boring music, probably not a fair assessment seeing as I haven't listened too him since his drill n bass period, but the prejudice remains and I just know I won't like it.

i dont think its the being sad so much its the looking out the window when its raining. I dont think anyone has a problem with being sad, Im sad sometimes when i think about my mum not being as mobile as she used to be, its perfectly valid
