Tim F dropping the ball massively by equating QT with Rebecca Black back there. World of difference in composition style + skill. Clearly shook ;)

Fair point, I shouldn't smear Rebacca like that.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:40 (eleven years ago)

Also yay for "I Will Never Let You Down".

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:41 (eleven years ago)

i like that johnny fever cares about rita ora

get over yourselves and have a good time -> but people do have a good time to it! -> that's irrelevant is a perfect ilm exchange

there's this great dissonance going on in my head with these super catchy songs playing while everyone bitches and moans.
I <3 ILM.

campreverb, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

Love the Rita Ora song. It must suck that she can no longer put it on her album along with all all the other Calvin Harris songs she had after she cheated on him. Her album was supposed to be out last summer but he took all his songs back after he found out.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

Her first album was one of my favorites of 2012 for reasons I still don't fully understand, but I've kept the fandom alive.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

i think the diff between downer party rap songs and melancholy techno/house or whatever is the ego of the former, like i'm expected to care about makonnen feeling sad

― lex pretend, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 2:33 PM (3 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

this is the thing ppl complain about re: drake but the flip of it is you never really care about the sentiment of a techno track. rap has way more scope for feelings/personality than techno in general, its kinda hard to gaf about any sentiment in techno because it's always kinda vaguely melancholy broody vibe, same way if u listen to enough of it you don't hear punk music as angry it just becomes pro forma

flopson, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

beg to differ

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:45 (eleven years ago)

says the sad nerdy bedroom specialist

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:45 (eleven years ago)

soft sad techno

, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:46 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Flopson otm. Rap being more expressive than techno is a GOOD THING.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:48 (eleven years ago)

this thread is such a volatile hot mess in every sense

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:48 (eleven years ago)

don't be talking about my techno

mh, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:48 (eleven years ago)

techno has a wide expressive range, don't blame ur ignorance on the form

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:50 (eleven years ago)

and need for vocals to telegram what you want to feel

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:50 (eleven years ago)

i meant there aren't really "happy" techno songs, it's a genre built on vague, dark moods. so a techno song doesn't "expect you to care" that it's in a minor key the way a rap song could but that's a feature not a bug

flopson, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:50 (eleven years ago)

Katy Perry record forgettable, quite liked the first 5 or 6 seconds of Jessie Ware, the makkleman was another sad sack looking out of a window and the rita ora really annoying singing.

theyre all kind of blurring into the same song now

saer, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:50 (eleven years ago)

dang dude there are like a million happy techno songs

Seriously. Some songs add or subtract elements every 25 seconds instead of 30.

this thread isn't the place but I am kind of interested in how "feelings" get talked about on ILM. like "another sad sack looking out of a window" is totally how i've described indiedudes+guitars in the past, so hearing that about rap is odd to me. lex saying he doesn't like Young Thug's "emotional" songs and I'm not even sure which songs he could mean. idk sometimes it feels like we're reinforcing some pretty terrible stereotypes of masculinity. I don't pursue new stuff anymore but I did used to love lots of mopey guitar music (by men and women) and that was probably a good thing in terms of not growing up emotionally stunted

rob, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:57 (eleven years ago)

i have never understood what lex is talking about re: thug

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:58 (eleven years ago)

"minipops" is really pretty

givenchy, or most things on tha tour mixtape

flopson, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:59 (eleven years ago)

i was expecting a new aphex record to be way less accessible than it ended up being, this track is a nice jam

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:59 (eleven years ago)

this was my number one

cajunsunday, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:00 (eleven years ago)

xp
maybe the supposed divide between "No Flex Zone" and "No Type" is more apropos

rob, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:00 (eleven years ago)

idk sometimes it feels like we're reinforcing some pretty terrible stereotypes of masculinity.

Word. And the emotional stuff on the Rich Gang tape is mostly Quan anyway.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:00 (eleven years ago)

Emotional rap is sometimes the best rap and that's how I feel about that

, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:00 (eleven years ago)

Wow people still think that way about techno. Personally I'd say it has the greatest emotional scope of any music.

ewar woowar (or something), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:01 (eleven years ago)

love this aphex track. probably should have put it higher than #25.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:01 (eleven years ago)

techno is made by heartless robots iirc?

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:01 (eleven years ago)

Or rather as great an emotional scope as any music xp

ewar woowar (or something), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:02 (eleven years ago)

xp RDJ has spoken about how this is his "pop" album and he expected it to be more accessible. I'm expecting more out there stuff to come.
