the verses sound like it might be on the verge of some kind of charming carly rae jepsen thing but they never get there and the chorus is just a blarey void

i find it v impressive how in the uk it almost feels like she's on some beyoncé level where she doesn't have to be release any actual music to be culturally omnipresent. now she's going on the voice so this will be even more the case. she truly has the greatest pr team in music right now.

the switch remix is also incredible but no one voted for that

Love the Rita Ora song. It must suck that she can no longer put it on her album along with all all the other Calvin Harris songs she had after she cheated on him. Her album was supposed to be out last summer but he took all his songs back after he found out.

Her first album was one of my favorites of 2012 for reasons I still don't fully understand, but I've kept the fandom alive.

i think the diff between downer party rap songs and melancholy techno/house or whatever is the ego of the former, like i'm expected to care about makonnen feeling sad

this is the thing ppl complain about re: drake but the flip of it is you never really care about the sentiment of a techno track. rap has way more scope for feelings/personality than techno in general, its kinda hard to gaf about any sentiment in techno because it's always kinda vaguely melancholy broody vibe, same way if u listen to enough of it you don't hear punk music as angry it just becomes pro forma

and need for vocals to telegram what you want to feel

i meant there aren't really "happy" techno songs, it's a genre built on vague, dark moods. so a techno song doesn't "expect you to care" that it's in a minor key the way a rap song could but that's a feature not a bug

Katy Perry record forgettable, quite liked the first 5 or 6 seconds of Jessie Ware, the makkleman was another sad sack looking out of a window and the rita ora really annoying singing.

this thread isn't the place but I am kind of interested in how "feelings" get talked about on ILM. like "another sad sack looking out of a window" is totally how i've described indiedudes+guitars in the past, so hearing that about rap is odd to me. lex saying he doesn't like Young Thug's "emotional" songs and I'm not even sure which songs he could mean. idk sometimes it feels like we're reinforcing some pretty terrible stereotypes of masculinity. I don't pursue new stuff anymore but I did used to love lots of mopey guitar music (by men and women) and that was probably a good thing in terms of not growing up emotionally stunted
