I liked Katy Perry a lot more after I watched her movie, which I guess was the point of it.

i've felt for sometime that katy perry is this generation's paula abdul (like i guess gaga is cyndi lauper). but that does a disservice to paula who was an all time great dancer. katy perry fails at every level of being a good pop star. i guess her appeal is that she's sexy but also an all american girl next door like some 50s pin-up which makes her safe for parents and kids to like? idk surely her expiration date is approaching.

this is sort of her appeal -- it's an edginess that's not *too* edgy, but it's also weaponized sex appeal in the same vein of rihanna and nicki minaj

at EMP last year somebody delivered a fervent defense of Katy Perry as singer-songwriter and Christian escapee. It wasn't persuasive.

it's not just cultural talking points, it's character as well - with most megastars you get a sense of who they are as a person (doesn't matter how much of this is artifice). katy perry is just...chameleonic but not in an interesting way, if she wasn't so famous she'd be forgettable

Cultural appropriation, puh-lease. Nobody is not a cultural appropriation. You are born neck deep in culture and it all came from everywhere and everybody took it from everybody.

I do recall Ann Powers on NPR saying a few years back that Katy Perry meant "kooky" or "wacky" or some other situation comedy type adjective. So, there's your deep meaning.

Not what it's about though - she doesn't have to 'mean' anything but the issue is she 'isn't' anything either. Voice? Presence? Performance? Visuals? Can't really describe her at all without pointing to specific singles. It's not a problem per se but it's surprising to me how huge she is in the history of selling records.

prism & teenage dream are pretty decent albums

i'll also say that prism & teenage dream get bad raps around here -- neither is a great album and she doesn't have the point of view of carly rae jepsen or charli xcx, but there are some pretty good non-singles across both albums

the pervasiveness of cultural appropriation should not exempt it from being identified or critiqued especially in its most flagrant or harmful iterations xp

that whole Jessie Ware album is a huge grower. i voted for, i think, both 'want your feeling' and 'cruel' but i doubt either will place.

if u want to see the worst of katy perry's cultural appropriation see her "this is how we do" video or her horrendous tweets around that time

jessie ware made a disappointingly patchy album but its relatively few highlights were so so good and i'm happy to see one of them here. "champagne kisses" feels like an instant ~classic, in a "this is exactly what you imagined peak jessie ware would be", and it hits all its spots, but my vote went to "tough love"

the thing that really makes katy stand out re cultural appropriation (a pretty underthought concept that deserves to be interrogated btw) is that she does it constantly

Jessie Ware's album is def patchy but I can't stop listening to it. Love "Champagne Kisses" – those one-note bits are a helluva hook.
