this really epitomises plodding, ponderous journeyman indie to me. ugh, the culture that pitchfork created

I think Spoon is the first track I've actually had to turn off before the end?

idgi, this is one of the most inoffensive things here.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:26 (eleven years ago)
Well this list went downhill fast...
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:26 (eleven years ago)
don't really listen to much indie any more, but played the shit out of this Spoon lp. this was one of my least faves on it though.
― jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:26 (eleven years ago)
I love how Britt Daniel keeps thinking he'll make his band more popular by writing crappier songs.

really smh that spoon have better p4k/p&j stats than most everything else that has placed so far
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:28 (eleven years ago)
No, I mean I think the guy has totally unrealistic expectations about them being a huge band. That's why he keeps trying to sign to major labels. "It's gonna work this time, I can feel it!"
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:29 (eleven years ago)
more like wooden spoon amirite

spoon? dorks more like
― nashwan, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:30 (eleven years ago)
xp what are you talking about, they signed to a major once in the 90s when everyone did and one more time like 15 years later
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:32 (eleven years ago)
Plodding, ponderous journeyman indie was a well established genre before the world wide web.
I'm pleased to note there's 6 acts named Fork, the most popular being a Norwegian hardcore band.

love that Spoon showed up, one of the best songs on their latest album. oh and Johnny Fever hates them has a thing about posting that opinion even in Spoon threads.
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:41 (eleven years ago)
This one just missed my ballot I think. Great song.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:41 (eleven years ago)
ya that is a super boring spoon song. huh.
alvvays: can't help but see this as the kind of deeply boring thing that could only pop off in toronto but maybe that's just the hater in me
kind of crazy only 7 people voted for YRN, felt like that was one of the big ones in terms of consensus rap songs. also whoever is downloading straye thugs make sure to swap out the awful quality mixtape version of YRN for a cdq/nodj
d'ange :)
― flopson, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:41 (eleven years ago)
voted 4 the album but this is such a wonderful song, i remember him playing it on his comeback tour a few years ago and finally getting a studio version out of nowhere was one of the best days in 2014
"really love" is the pinnacle of the album to me, i wonder if that'll place
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:43 (eleven years ago)
oh wait no i did vote for Sugah Daddy.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:45 (eleven years ago)
ugh god actually reading the lyrics to "Sugah Daddy" is srsly creepin me out
― Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:45 (eleven years ago)
tbc, I'm not part of the kneejerk anti-indie people in these threads. I spend probably half of my music listening time listening to indie things. But consensus indie picks around here are terrible usually.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:45 (eleven years ago)
i mean i voted for it bcz it's a jam but damn
― Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:46 (eleven years ago)
flopson can you YSI me a CDQ of YRN
― 龜, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:46 (eleven years ago)
Think mine is from STraye thugs and only 128 :(
Voted for Transgender Dysphoria Blues, Archie, and Inside Out. Nominated Sugah Daddy but didn't end up having room on my list for it. Biggest revelation so far has been the Holly Herndon track, which sounds like a beautiful intersection of Oneohtrix and Julianna Barwick.
Quick question about I Luh Ya Papi, which I've only done a cursory search for and can't find anything on:
Is the synth shift at 3:36 a lift of the shift at 1:32 in MOP's Ante Up? Direct links:

I find it weird referring to 'Sugah Daddy' (and a lot of tracks off Messiah) as a 'song'. Obviously it has singing and lyrics in it but I still hear it more as a really great (and deceptively complex) groove laced with vocal interjections.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:50 (eleven years ago)
xp amazing catch
― flopson, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:50 (eleven years ago)
Oof. Sorry for the embeds.
― Indexed, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:50 (eleven years ago)
Not remotely the best song on Black Messiah for mine, still resent Drugs A Money a bit for not nominating 1000 Deaths :P
― telling like hot takes (imago), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:54 (eleven years ago)
Both are taken from "It's So Hard" by Big Pun, who had recently died at the time of the MOP track and grew up in the Bronx as did J. Lo and French Montana.

so, i am giving Nicki Manaj an earnest listen for, really, the first time in my life (i mean i've heard her before - but never really *listened*) and this seriously has to be some of the worst garbage I have ever battled my way through.
and i really dislike it when people are super negative on these threads, showing up just to bash stuff etc – but I just cannot fathom how any adult can endorse something like Minaj.
now that that is off my chest... the Migos/Young Thug track is great. wish i had heard it earlier so I could have voted for it!
