Still find it hard to believe there hasn't already been a song called Uptown Funk until this point.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:24 (eleven years ago)

Probably cuz most ppl are too self conscious to bite Dirty Mind so brazenly

spliffify (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:29 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Lipps Inc vs Prince

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:38 (eleven years ago)

ha very consistent across 3 polls!

rough surf on the coast - wish i could've spent the whole day alone with you

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:41 (eleven years ago)

omg I <3 "I Luh Ya Papi", I had that on repeat for a good minute earlier this year

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:49 (eleven years ago)

it's almost, like, willfully frivolous and disposable or something and it doesn't try to be anything more which gives it a v definite charm. It's such a fuckin earworm.

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:51 (eleven years ago)

haha a good minute!

nxd, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:54 (eleven years ago)

another Against Me! song - may even prefer this one to the other one, I think.

first two songs will require me to renege on so very much prejudice to even start to listen

rae sredrum (imago), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:55 (eleven years ago)

this j-lo song is rated!

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:57 (eleven years ago)

"Uptown Funk" is fun but as usual with Bruno the schticky pastiche makes me roll my eyes a bit. I think I preferred "Treasure" afa that type of thing tbh. Also btw, neither MJ or Prince are what this song is going for, there were other black male singers in the 80s.

"I Luh Ya Papi" didn't make my ballot but like lex says it's just a very intensely likeable song and also the video is great. I didn't realize there was ILM love for it!

"Transgender Dysphoria Blues" is my favorite song from the AM album and I would have voted for it very high if I didn't just give my points to the album instead. I love how it centers on this refrain that isn't directly connected to the rest of what she's singing about but is this total emotional punch in the gut that evokes so much nonetheless. It's such a romantic image but also so forlorn at the same time and it performs this function in the song where LJG takes a moment to remind everyone that in spite of having to deal with bullshit transmisogyny and whatever else, hey I have the same feelings about the same things all of you do. Also those rolling snares are such a good way to start a song.

REV OTM

its way more morris day and kool + the gang imo

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:13 (eleven years ago)

My memory of the AM! album (and the EP!) was drinking alone in Shanghai, walking out to the elevator landing on the 8th floor of the building I was living at, staring out the window at the city while smoking Panda cigarettes, staying still enough so the motion-activated hallway light would switch off leaving me in darkness, this album playing in my earphones

, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:15 (eleven years ago)

rule number one to be a boss ass bitch:
never let a clown n*gga try to play you
if he play you, then rule number two:
fuck his best friends then make 'em yes-men
and get a dick pic, and then you press send
and send a red heart and send a kissy face
and tell him that his friends love how your pussy taste

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:16 (eleven years ago)

xposts I hear a lot of Zapp and, yeah, Jam and Lewis boogie type stuff especially.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:16 (eleven years ago)

i voted for this last year! what a bravura performance though. disappointing album or no, nicki really is pop's mvp right now

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:17 (eleven years ago)

I like the J-Lo video concept and the song's a relatively good pop track, just won't stay in my mind for very long.

'Boss Ass Bitch' prob the best Nicki to place.

emil.y, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)

Also James Brown circa "Living in America".

"Boss Ass Bitch" is my second vote to place. I feel like a lot of Nicki's rappity rap tracks this year (including "Lookin' Ass") while good, suffered from a certain po-facedness that is unbefitting of her, but this one she sounds like she's having a blast rapping circles around everybody.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:23 (eleven years ago)

didn't hate the j-lo and approved of its keyboards, obv wdnt vote for it but not a hater.

minaj song is best when she does the singing bit, slightly out of tune - it's kinda punk. her lyrics? sounds like she's fighting the right battles

rae sredrum (imago), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:27 (eleven years ago)

housekeeping note regarding "Boss Ass Bitch":

i wasn't sure whether to include a "Ft. PTAF" or not (and neither was seandalai).

pfork did, P+J and whomever nominated it here didn't, so i just tacked it on anyway because i'd already spent too much time investigating the matter lol

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:30 (eleven years ago)

More AM! and Nicki...starting to feel like reruns are on tv. More differenter stuff plz.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:31 (eleven years ago)

glad this placed higher than the other 2 Nicki tracks so far, it's so so so much better than those imo

some dude, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:32 (eleven years ago)

the J.Lo album was really surprisingly, illogically good, "I Luh Ya Papi" is probably my least favorite song on it tbh

some dude, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:33 (eleven years ago)

the J-Lo song is OK to good; I like it better now. I've only liked three or four of her singles.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:34 (eleven years ago)

PTAF did the original song and nicki keeps their hook so they deserve the "ft" imo

poll feels a lot less predictable than last years despite repetition (which there'll always be to an extent, esp when you consider nicki's approach to releasing material - two of her three trax so far are not on her album)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:34 (eleven years ago)

same here, which is why me enjoying an entire album of hers was so surprising!

some dude, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:35 (eleven years ago)

thanks lex, that was my best guess but i wasn't 100%

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)

I'm guessing this is probably the last we'll see of Nicki or AM.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:39 (eleven years ago)

At least until the albums poll.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

one of those times i wish Nicki acted more like Drake -- she could've kept a PTAF verse on there, signed them and sent the song to radio. would sure rather hear that than Makonnen.

some dude, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

why are we all giving our hot takes on every song

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

I also prefer "Transgender...." to "Fuckmylife666" but the album is such a complete experience it's hard to pick moments.

bad hot takes, stopped reading 5 characters in

60 MARK RONSON "Uptown Funk" Ft Bruno Mars [252 points, 7 votes] - ive had a more negative reaction to this song than any i can remember in a long time, heavy heavy gross thirsty karaoke vibes, feel fortunate to be in a place in my life right now where im not exposed to the radio too much, mark ronson and bruno mars can both be consumed by the mighty flames of my antipathy afaic

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:44 (eleven years ago)

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:45 (eleven years ago)

a not take if you will

valleys of your mind (mh), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:49 (eleven years ago)

ronson song is the only one that's driven me to the complaints metathread so far, so fair play to jho's cold takedown, think it might be a song where the onus is on the defence ;)

telling like hot takes (imago), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:50 (eleven years ago)

song is truly the defintion of faking the funk folks

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:52 (eleven years ago)

why do you hate Michelle Pfeiffer

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:52 (eleven years ago)

I find Uptown Funk quite enjoyable, but I also praise it for saving me from further overplay of Locked Out of Heaven (which I never need to hear again ever).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:52 (eleven years ago)

locked out of heaven >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> uptown funk
