I'm not 100% on board with get lucky but it's abt a hundred times better than either cee-lo cut

Just catching up on the rollout so far... More stuff I've enjoyed at this point in the poll than last year, I think

yus, no indie, no country and no metal. A great roll out so far. A proper tracks poll.

"Meanwhile, another legend is about to be born--somewhere in the mid-west of America, the Minneapolis sound is taking shape. A blend of funk and rock, known in the local clubs and bars where it's performed as Uptown, it's practised by two teenage bands: Grand Central (later named Champagne) with Andre Cymone on bass, Morris Day on drums, and Prince on guitar, and Flyte Tyme--Terry Lewis on bass, Alexander O'Neal on vocals, and Jellybean Johnson on drums. All are products of Minneapolis Central High School."

I can't be doing with the chorus on this track at all.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:09 (eleven years ago)

This poll is pretty weird, there are definite twists and turns.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:11 (eleven years ago)

wow i forgot about i luh ya papi

great song

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:13 (eleven years ago)

ha how random to see this song place, it didn't feel like a major pop hit and is probably a tier or two below peak j-lo, but it's tremendously likeable (especially the chorus mdc) and obv the video was exactly how to satirise misogyny in music videos without being problematic in other ways

j-lo is just an international treasure at this point so it's always nice to see her

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:13 (eleven years ago)

uptown funk cynical but enjoyable

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:13 (eleven years ago)

love this song, was right in the middle of my ballot

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:13 (eleven years ago)

(i should clarify that peak j-lo = some of the very best pop singles going back over 1.5 decades so being a tier or two below that is not really a diss)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:14 (eleven years ago)

This song has definitely benefitted from being right near/at the top of the Summer Jams thread, whatever gets in those first few posts tends to place.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:14 (eleven years ago)

Also big up whoever's keeping the Spotify playlist updated - I've got the thing on automatic download and it is a real pleasure to get the new entries delivered straight to my phone on my commute home.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:16 (eleven years ago)

holy crap the video for Uptown Funk is embarrassing

rob, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:16 (eleven years ago)

Didn't vote for it because I only like the video. A lot.

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:17 (eleven years ago)

xp the JLo vid that is

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:17 (eleven years ago)

rob, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:18 (eleven years ago)

male pop singers really need to expand their visuals beyond "michael jackson tribute act"

prolego, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:18 (eleven years ago)

never considered this factor: will keep it in mind next year

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:20 (eleven years ago)

"uptown funk" video reminds me of janet jackson's "alright" as well which is brilliant, but he was obviously biting off her brother here.

prolego, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:22 (eleven years ago)

lol Eric H

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:23 (eleven years ago)

also i got the ninos du brasil album and it def lives up to "sombra da lua". "essengheio tropical" is incredible

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:23 (eleven years ago)

Still find it hard to believe there hasn't already been a song called Uptown Funk until this point.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:24 (eleven years ago)

Probably cuz most ppl are too self conscious to bite Dirty Mind so brazenly

spliffify (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:29 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Lipps Inc vs Prince

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:33 (eleven years ago)

ha very consistent across 3 polls!

rough surf on the coast - wish i could've spent the whole day alone with you

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:41 (eleven years ago)

omg I <3 "I Luh Ya Papi", I had that on repeat for a good minute earlier this year

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:49 (eleven years ago)

it's almost, like, willfully frivolous and disposable or something and it doesn't try to be anything more which gives it a v definite charm. It's such a fuckin earworm.

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:51 (eleven years ago)

haha a good minute!

nxd, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:54 (eleven years ago)

another Against Me! song - may even prefer this one to the other one, I think.

first two songs will require me to renege on so very much prejudice to even start to listen

rae sredrum (imago), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:55 (eleven years ago)

this j-lo song is rated!

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 13:57 (eleven years ago)

"Uptown Funk" is fun but as usual with Bruno the schticky pastiche makes me roll my eyes a bit. I think I preferred "Treasure" afa that type of thing tbh. Also btw, neither MJ or Prince are what this song is going for, there were other black male singers in the 80s.

"I Luh Ya Papi" didn't make my ballot but like lex says it's just a very intensely likeable song and also the video is great. I didn't realize there was ILM love for it!

"Transgender Dysphoria Blues" is my favorite song from the AM album and I would have voted for it very high if I didn't just give my points to the album instead. I love how it centers on this refrain that isn't directly connected to the rest of what she's singing about but is this total emotional punch in the gut that evokes so much nonetheless. It's such a romantic image but also so forlorn at the same time and it performs this function in the song where LJG takes a moment to remind everyone that in spite of having to deal with bullshit transmisogyny and whatever else, hey I have the same feelings about the same things all of you do. Also those rolling snares are such a good way to start a song.

its way more morris day and kool + the gang imo

gr8080, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:13 (eleven years ago)

My memory of the AM! album (and the EP!) was drinking alone in Shanghai, walking out to the elevator landing on the 8th floor of the building I was living at, staring out the window at the city while smoking Panda cigarettes, staying still enough so the motion-activated hallway light would switch off leaving me in darkness, this album playing in my earphones

, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:15 (eleven years ago)

rule number one to be a boss ass bitch:
never let a clown n*gga try to play you
if he play you, then rule number two:
fuck his best friends then make 'em yes-men
and get a dick pic, and then you press send
and send a red heart and send a kissy face
and tell him that his friends love how your pussy taste

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:16 (eleven years ago)

xposts I hear a lot of Zapp and, yeah, Jam and Lewis boogie type stuff especially.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:16 (eleven years ago)

i voted for this last year! what a bravura performance though. disappointing album or no, nicki really is pop's mvp right now

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:17 (eleven years ago)

I like the J-Lo video concept and the song's a relatively good pop track, just won't stay in my mind for very long.

'Boss Ass Bitch' prob the best Nicki to place.

emil.y, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)

Also James Brown circa "Living in America".

"Boss Ass Bitch" is my second vote to place. I feel like a lot of Nicki's rappity rap tracks this year (including "Lookin' Ass") while good, suffered from a certain po-facedness that is unbefitting of her, but this one she sounds like she's having a blast rapping circles around everybody.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:23 (eleven years ago)

didn't hate the j-lo and approved of its keyboards, obv wdnt vote for it but not a hater.

minaj song is best when she does the singing bit, slightly out of tune - it's kinda punk. her lyrics? sounds like she's fighting the right battles
