I like this pretty much exactly the same as Save Rock and Roll tbh - almost exactly the same number of hits + clunkers.

iiii might think this is their best after folie? reserving right to reverse that opinion

the second half is so great that i like "immortals" now by proxy

for some reason Stump singing "Uuuuuuma Thurman!" is just a step too far for me

"Novocaine" is probably my fave, awesomely weird chorus vocal line

i like everything i've heard off this album but i can't imagine anything displacing Cork Tree from my #2 ranking xp

previous #2 was a tie between infinity and take this to your grave

Right now it feels to me like Folie > SRNR = AB/AP > Infinity >> Cork Tree

Cork Tree is definitely not all killer no filler, but it holds up imo. Infinity always felt like a missed opportunity to me.

this is def the best non-folie FOB album, brad otm

pretty much all of their records have either failed experiments (rat a tat) or egregious filler (l slept with FOB and all I got..., fame<infamy, etc), and this album just...doesn't. even something like immortals is just "not as good as everything else," rather than a throwaway or failure

maybe "the mighty fall" is a more agreed upon example of a failed experiment? not so much for the rap verse but for the fact that the rap verse is by big sean.

I will probably never like any of the guest-rapper tracks or recent singles tho (save for the lovably bonkers AB/AP title track)

The Mighty Fall is one of the favorite FOB songs among my kid and his friends.

Although they thought the line before the Big Sean rap was "I want to lock you up inside and swallow, swallow the cheese!"

Anyway, I haven't heard this full album yet. I've been listening to the tracks that have been available via itunes and I'm not all that into them. Hoping this changes once I get some context.

My ranking of albums is probably like:

IOH=FAD>SRAR>>FUCT>>>>>TTTYG

tttyg feels like an almost entirely different band but idk i think it's one of the more perfectly composed pop-punk records ever

Basically a repeat of my experience with 1989. Album that I've been looking forward to basically since the last one came out, been dreading since the first awful single, and landed in my iTunes on release day, probably never to be listened to again. A halfhearted attempt at radio-friendluness that leaves behind all the stuff that that made them melodically and lyrically interesting. They did it so well on the last record! Everything on that one felt like a single. Everything here feels like a b side.

New S-K today takes away some of the sting, but this record is a bummer.

Just realized that this is the first album since FUCT to not feature any stunt casting.

Eh, I dunno. I'm giving it a second chance on the trip home. Not as bad as I thought this morning. Still feels a little awkward in places. Gonna load it up on my kid's ipod when I get home. He'll probably love the hell out of it.

Favorite Record annoys the shit out of me though. No compunctions about saying that.

I don't like "Uma" or "Favourite Record" but I remain pro- this album in general

just doing an actual faux surf rock Pulp Fiction thing with the music makes it all way more on-the-nose than the usual FOB lyric pop culture potpourri imo

"uma thurman"'s resemblance to "misirilou" and "chick habit" makes it pretty much exclusively intertextual about tarantino soundtracks but i think it makes for a really invigorating and strange song, plus the munsters sample is p inspired idk

I think if I hadn't at some level decided that "more on the nose" = "better" I probably wouldn't have become such a FOB stan.
