on one listen i'm loving this better than any s-k album since one beat, which is my favourite of all their albums

you're loving this better than the woods
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 12 January 2015 18:22 (eleven years ago)
i've never been able to get into any s-k album other than one beat, it just seems a thousand times hookier than anything else they've done. but this is reminding me of it!
― lex pretend, Monday, 12 January 2015 18:24 (eleven years ago)
Yeah this was fantastic.
― Evan, Monday, 12 January 2015 18:29 (eleven years ago)
'one beat' is their hookiest to date (along with this) but the other albums are great too. however i think maybe you'd like the tunes from the other albums better live, because when i saw them live in 2000 everything clicked for me, they are incredible onstage.

yes! i bought tickets for me & my wife because they went on sale right before our anniversary and she's a huge fan but the show in minneapolis happens to actually be ON valentine's day so i was like wtf are we gonna do about babysitting but it turns out a friend of ours can so we can go :)
i figured i could flip the ticket because it sold out in like 15 mins but still psyched to be able to go
― Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 12 January 2015 18:56 (eleven years ago)
It took 2-3 tracks for the album to really "kick in" for me, but now we're rolling.
I still prefer The Woods to this but I'm not a serious S-K fan, so...

Love S-K, but something about that makes me want to see them less.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 January 2015 18:48 (eleven years ago)
Love this. I don't know who the 4th person is either but those sounds in the breakdown were glorious.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 16 January 2015 18:51 (eleven years ago)
As much as I love the chorus and breakdown of "A New Wave", I feel like the guitar line in the verse doesn't make much sense. Kinda melodically aimless or something.

Is Corin playing a baritone?
― campreverb, Friday, 16 January 2015 22:04 (eleven years ago)
yeah i thought it was bass on the record but maybe baritone?

― Evan, Sunday, 18 January 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)
if I'm being honest with myself, it looks like they're cashing in-and hey, more power to them. they probably deserve it more than just about anyone I can think of off the top of my head.
― campreverb, Sunday, 18 January 2015 16:28 (eleven years ago)
I dunno you don't really need to bother with doing an album if you just want to cash in, cf Pavement, Archers, Outlast, etc etc
― Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 18 January 2015 20:04 (eleven years ago)
For some reason, almost all late show indie performances seem tossed off in this way, just kind of sarcastic and not committed-to.
― RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 18 January 2015 21:58 (eleven years ago)

On an unrelated note, I find this to be a solid but kinda unspectacular record. Like most decent reunion albums, really

Just dawned on me that in the time Sleater-kinney was away, Belle and Sebastian only released one proper album.

The last s-k thing I heard was Dig Me Out. Watching the Letterman thing, Was not expecting Major key harmonies on the chorus.
― calstars, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 03:31 (eleven years ago)
This is amazing though. Over before you know it and every song on the album is tight. Gives me a feeling like when Weezer reunited and came out with the green album, in that respect. Bury Our Friends sounds even better in context.
― american tail/american pie (how's life), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:41 (eleven years ago)
Superb. I can definitely see several 32 minute blocks of my time in the coming days devoted to listening to this album, which is more than I can say for a lot of new stuff.
As for "it's like they've never left' comments, contextually this set makes perfect sense coming after the last Corin solo lp, while also remedying one thing that both of her solo collections lacked in giving her back a voice to trade lines with.
My biggest complaint is there isn't a really an obvious popcorn/summer jam funtimes track ala "Oh!", "Little Babies", "Prisstina" etc.
― Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 02:28 (eleven years ago)
pretty sure "Hey Darling," the title track, and "Surface Envy" are those songs.
I admire the number of killer hooks but the guitars, vocals, and rhythms are less tangled than on their other records. I'm just not as impressed.

Really enjoying this record after 3 listens! I imagine I will like it even more as I continue playing it.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 03:27 (eleven years ago)
the Spin review today said there is not a Corin-wailing song, which is a big concern.
― campreverb, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 03:57 (eleven years ago)
There are more Corin vocals than Carrie on this record, so that's a plus for me.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 04:04 (eleven years ago)
that's just like… there should be wailing. and wailing about there not being wailing.

Ok, listening to the Conan performance of Surface Envy now, this is a lot better, lots of Corin. this is really kind of a new sound for them-Carrie bringing a lot more St. Vincent/Belew-type into her playing, and Corin again with the baritone(?) or super de-tuned 6, almost gets a fuzz bass sound going. Awesome.http://teamcoco.com/video/sleater-kinney-01-20-15

This is true, but also the direction they've been headed since All Hands. I think Hot Rock was the peak of tangled vocals and rhythms, then they got interested in more straight-ahead rock -- which they do well.
On just two times through, I like the new one a lot. Not sure where it will ultimately fall in my SK ranking, but really I have albums 2-4 on a pedestal and all the rest one rung lower. This one will fit in comfortably with the latter group.

Yeah, NCTL is for me the best of their second-tier work.
