ma1: favourite moment? maybe making my first tune, recording it in my yard, giving it out, getting feedback-

marcus: you pussy

r|t|c, Friday, 9 January 2015 21:37 (eleven years ago)

I was sad when Marcus called Footloose a cunt though :-(

Tim F, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:10 (eleven years ago)

That was fun. You can tell they've had variations of that conversation a lot over the years.

Thought Donaeo's I'm Fly would have got more grief as a prominent corny crossover track that failed to get traction and while I understand in principle why Head Shoulders Knees and Toes might be worthy of derision, it was undeniably a funky track.

tsrobodo, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:30 (eleven years ago)

"I'm Fly" was a great tune though. What is corny about that beat.

In any event it came out in mid-2010 so was too late to contribute to the "death of funky" narrative (which was well in train by that point).

Tim F, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:50 (eleven years ago)

Corniness applies more the lyrics and the video than the beat which was perfectly fine, but just that. Lacking the mystique of "Party Hard" or the urgency of "Devil in a New Dress". Working in the same vein but adding nothing new.

May not be a reflection of what was actually happening in the scene but for me that was the death knell.

Was it really 2010? I remember hearing it earlier than that.

tsrobodo, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:21 (eleven years ago)

Whoops that's probably "Devil in a Blue Dress"

tsrobodo, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:22 (eleven years ago)

what was nasty's beef with roska about again?

Benny B, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:46 (eleven years ago)

Well Marcus was probably playing "I'm Fly" earlier but the video was mid-2010.

I think the roundtable is interesting in that it goes beyond "bad corny MC tunes killed funky" and unpacks what that means. The issue wasn't "Head Shoulders Knees & Toes" or "Are You Gonna Bang Doe" per se - few if any of the key DJs even played those tunes - so much as how they:

1. created a sense of easy mainstream crossover which - when it wasn't really fulfilled - made funky seem like a commercial failure in a way that limited people's capacity to sell their work as "funky"; and

2. pushed away the older audience who started identifying with "house" again.

Tim F, Saturday, 10 January 2015 00:44 (eleven years ago)

Yeah those points were put across really well and I'm probably being too facile. I guess what it boils down to is that I really don't like "I'm Fly".

tsrobodo, Saturday, 10 January 2015 01:22 (eleven years ago)

"Head Shoulders Knees & Toes" is still the absolute shit tho. Every genre gotta have its ringtone rap.

The Reverend, Saturday, 10 January 2015 02:36 (eleven years ago)

RIP my hard drive from the late 00s I had all this shit on ;_;

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 January 2015 19:44 (eleven years ago)

I've been trying to rebuild my UK funky selection cause my hard drive from that era died without backup and it's some of my favorite music ever. This will be super helpful!

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 January 2015 19:45 (eleven years ago)

glad to be of use! it took quite a while to put together, theres still plenty of great tunes i wanted to include that aren't on youtube, but its as comprehensive a list as you you're likely to find i reckon.

btw anyone know who made that creeper bootleg thats on the mix?

Benny B, Saturday, 24 January 2015 21:31 (eleven years ago)

Pretty sure it's Maxwell D & Bean Funky Creeper.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFzQheuI1EE

It's one of the only ones I remember anyway.

Mix looks ace.

jimitheexploder, Saturday, 24 January 2015 21:43 (eleven years ago)

Tim F, Saturday, 24 January 2015 22:35 (eleven years ago)

lol i am loving this imaginary uk funky revival tbh... all the other aggro uk urban music gets nostalgia and hugs round the campfire but mention fucking soca tribal bongo jams and it's goon armshouse within minutes

r|t|c, Sunday, 25 January 2015 12:55 (eleven years ago)

I will never understand Makeda's taste in funky tunes, it always seemed so random esp. when it would be combined with these boilerplate "state of the nation" pronouncements about funky as a scene which would make you expect more rote opinions, but no, she always followed her own oddball muse.

"The Funky Anthem" @ number 3???

Tim F, Sunday, 25 January 2015 13:03 (eleven years ago)

ha I like how after all of Geeneus' aggro, Marcus Nasty jumps in there being completely reasonable

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 January 2015 18:35 (eleven years ago)

v interested to see how the uk makes out with complex or complex makes out in the uk or ... whatever

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 26 January 2015 01:00 (eleven years ago)

Does anyone have a non-garbage quality mp3 of the Aidonia version of "Inflation"?

aybaybayfan (The Reverend), Saturday, 31 January 2015 23:33 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I've got one rev - I'll stick it up later.

Prompted to revive this thread again by listening to the DJ OneDrop 'Kingston Flavour' mix and suddenly realising it's one of my favourite mixes ever, kinda the ur-Azonto mix in places.

aybaybayfan (The Reverend), Sunday, 8 February 2015 10:45 (eleven years ago)

It appears I've only got the Aidonia track in 192 which may be all that exists in for that matter, I assume that's too shonky for your purposes?

Matt DC, Sunday, 8 February 2015 11:04 (eleven years ago)

The one I could find is only in 128 so that would be an improvement.

Does anyone have this in better than 64kbps mp3? Have been looking for the past 3 weeks, but haven't been able to do better than that (which is really rubbish).

toby, Saturday, 28 February 2015 08:47 (eleven years ago)

nah good read on d40's part though, tbrr i do semi-seriously feel like funky in its essence has been proven to be an ineffable mystery known or remembered by like maybe ten ppl in the world so i'm actually kind of intrigued by the ways it will get burped up even if it is to be by this canadian dickwad who clearly deserves assassination. perhaps not even but especially given he is a fresh-eyed (bc avaricious) foreign element - from what i can see this news has been well received by the uk with what seems to me a telling tinge of relief/release

do i like it?... it's a vibe idk i'm not dismissing. i am generally more wary than ever before of holding onto the past in cancerous ways. young ppl are not me and me ppl are dead or as good as so pick the bones out of that

honestly i have previously toyed with suggesting an actual funky revival is real and in the fleeting offing (see disclosure thread), or rather a kind of more afro-tribal-positive proto-bruk beat subconscious moodboard pool at least, but... it's like ppl are drawing a blank at it, like the constructive materials are put in place but the je ne sais quoi is missing and they know it. a full mandate would be like the funkysouls messageboard version. all of which quite fitting bc funky in its original form already inherently carried a complicated bundle of nostalgic nuance (see several thousand vintage posts upthread lol jokes on u)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 6 April 2016 00:13 (ten years ago)

i mean (and basically shadowboxing with lex now) it's very easy to bun this out straight away - 'do u mind' the deathless totem never to be traduced, least not by _____ , uk pathetically biddable uk ever - which is not to say too easy (actually it's correct) i'm just wondering aloud if defending until the end of days the number u happened to get sometime on life's roulette wheel is really how it's meant to be i guess

r|t|c, Wednesday, 6 April 2016 00:31 (ten years ago)
