Jay's Verse on "Pressure,"

Yeah, I was a little weirded out by that. Figure he knows that Lupe's audience is different from his so he drops that clumsy Warhol reference like Ooh the college kids'll like this. And he's never been good with beats that make him rap slowly (cf. "Hustlin").

For me "Just Might Be Okay" is the abosolute killer.

I think this is like a 70/30 split, damn near classic if he had trimmed it and toyed with the sequencing a bit. Fucking intro, fucking 16 minutes of shout outs, and putting that slow track up front really soured my first few listens. Now that I've dug back into it I'm significantly happier than I was initially, but still disappointed it doesn't fulfill the promise of the leak.

they say one of the songs on jigga's album will be based on some basquiat painting he owns as well.

(bagsy 'rammelljay-z' btw)

when people start getting sick of what's on commercial radio (bling and drugs), they'll start looking for this kinda stuff.

yeah or like, choosing bapes over nike. really making a statement yknow?

it's a mystery to me why people don't find lupe as trite as pharrell.

rtccc (mwah), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

the beat on that track with jay is a fucking trainwreck

and what (ooo), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

a few of the beats are! I think one of the ones with gemini had me wondering what was going on but i only heard this at a listening station so i dont have track names.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

deej, that's "Just Might Be OK"!

I thought that beat was crazydumbhotness!

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Srsly, all triumphal horns & shit, man. Melodrama perhaps, but I find it light years more compelling than Cam'Ron's "Get Em Girls" beat everybody was on about a while back.

Re: the Jay track, absolute agreement. WTF.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

thats not the song i'm thinking of. i thought gemini was on two tracks. maybe it is the jay track.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

i donno i just bought bjaxx instead.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the Gemini on here is the same Gemini that works w/ Danger Mouse, if that's what you were thinking. I'm pretty sure this one's a singer.

Nah, that's Jemini with a J.

Lupe really nails the "I'm a total nerd, but I like to roll with the big guys" thing better than anyone (except Kanye ca. 2004, obv.). Especially in that song where talks about wanting to say "bitch" just because Too $hort said it a whole bunch.

And you know what, fuck all that anyway because he's a killer MC. And I shouldn't even have to qualify that. The most gut-wrenching ONE BAR I've heard in hip-hop all year is from Lupe, because it's complicated subject matter phrased with a complicated rhyme scheme and full of great visuals, yet he makes it seem so EFFORTLESS:

So I finally listened to this. I quite like it. A bit patchy, but You My and Kick Push are great.

The new DJ Envy/Lupe Chi-Town Guevera mixtape is. FUCKING. HOTTTTTT11111

Wot? Where? How?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 19 January 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

i wanna like him but hes just a bit too convenient a 'contradiction' of trendy er, contradictions. hes a great rapper, technically, but his beats are very boring.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 19 January 2007 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently the new record is called The Cool and will continue the story of the guy from the least entertaining song on the first album.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 19 January 2007 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

his mix-Cds are better than the album. his hooks are pretty bad/grafted on too.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Soulja Boy dude was on Ellen, too. she is single-handedly responsible for all black music in America today. i believe she also gave Ice Cube his verse on 'Straight Outta Compton' to build his confidence.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

What a wonderful world this would be if the above were true!

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

i never lie about the ellen show

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 8 February 2008 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I meant the whole "Ellen gave Ice Cube his verse on 'Straight Outta Compton'" thing.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

i know! i just want people to know where i stand, it's an election year

My mom, last night: "Some rapper has dropped out of Last Day of Classes so he can tour with Kanye West."
Me: "What's his name?"
Her: "Now I can't think of it..."
Me: "Uh... Yung Joc? Hurricane Chris? Souja Boy? It can't be Lil Wayne."
Her: "No, it's not Lil Wayne."
Me: !

i have some questions about this superstar joint

1) who is this tard singing the chorus?? is this the cat from one republic or coldplay dude or what?

2) why does the intro sound like old acid house? is this sampled from a guy called gerald or something?

and what, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

it's some random guy lupe signed to his label

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

His name is Matthew Santos.

jaymc, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

1) who is this tard singing the chorus?? is this the cat from one republic or coldplay dude or what?

false coldplay dude called matthew santos. did some bad choruses on food & liquor too.

2) why does the intro sound like old acid house? is this sampled from a guy called gerald or something?

cause fnf's in-house producers are crazy

xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure I've said this before but "American Terrorist" was like my #1 keeper off that album.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Why does the beginning of the "Superstar" video look like the beginning of the "U Got the Look" video?

The Reverend, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Lupe's bungling of Tribe Called Quest lyrics on some award show seems to have tainted him for some

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

lol welcome to three months ago

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

it did make him seem like a taint, yeah.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

I think cuz he's on tour now it was getting brought up again.

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i'm a little skeptical of his 'i never heard tribe before' shit cause "paris, tokyo" sounds straight off midnight marauders.
