his solo album is called The Abstract. it's a pretty jiggy hip hop album (but really, really great). i'd rather listen to that now than any tribe called quest albums. the album you're thinking about is Kamaal, his rock album. they released an promo ep on vinyl with like 5 tracks that i have that's pretty good - although everyone HATES it. you might be able to buy it on gemm

right now i cant get enough of Frank N Dank's 48 Hours. When the track "Pimp Strut" screws down halfway through?? Whoa!

track 20 is built around the same wah-wah meltdown that Edan uses for the second half of 'science of the two'.

Anyway, I completely agree with the sentiments of the post about "sleepy-time hiphop". 99% of everything Dilla's done is teh boredom inducer. I've never understood why people love this guy so much.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 February 2008 09:53 (sixteen years ago) link
very overrated guy, despite his good productions. i think he could have done with some better engineering at times too. and it wouldnt hurt to produce stuff in tandem with the mc rather than just sending beat tapes and leaving it at that.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 28 February 2008 13:30 (sixteen years ago) link
better engineering? come on man, who cares? i dont personally see where his engineering was lacking (his bass is some of the best in hiphop, and the way his beats hit is ridiculous) but even if it wasnt perfect, who cares? if that is what you hear when you listen to his music, you have missed the point entirely.
― pipecock, Thursday, 28 February 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago) link
his engineering was fine. i love the sound mixing on 'the shining' in particular. only titchyschneider could really make me agree with pipecock on a dilla thread
― deej, Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link
lol
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 February 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link
a fair amount of his beats sound a bit 'dull' sonically. like theyre just dull thuds, not much 'body' or life to them. partly this is his style of course, but it also just seems like shoddy engineering to me. am thinking of some of the beats on t he guilty simpson album in particular. the fact deej doesnt agree only makes me more decided.

did anyone read the feature on dilla in the wire this month? i couldn't get a copy of it. apparently the interviewed guilty simpson! so excited to read that.
― davie, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link
you probably wouldn't want to read their review of 'ode to the ghetto' then. quote: "guilty simpson is not a good rapper"
― sam500, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link
Anyone have a copy of that jay dee greatest hits mix that was up around here a while ago?

The Okay Playa thing? Yeah I can send it to you.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link
Hi! I don't know if that was it, but it had Stakes Is High on it.
― admrl, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link
that is such bullshit. guilty simpson is a fucking genius.
― davie, Friday, 18 April 2008 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link
who wrote the review? do they still have hua hsu doing them? usually he's on point
― deej, Friday, 18 April 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link
The Dilla piece is by Stelfox. I don't recall the Guilty Simpson review, but I don't think Hua Hsu is the main hip hop guy anymore (I think it might be. . . wait for it. . . Nick Sylvester.)

"Hi! I don't know if that was it, but it had Stakes Is High on it."
That's not it, I don't think (the Okay Playa is mostly blends of Donuts tracks IIRC.)
― Alex in SF, Friday, 18 April 2008 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link
yup, nick syvester wrote that review: apparently guilty "reaches myspace levels of lyrical inanity on the title track..."

Has anyone tried the "Jay Loves Japan" thing now it's finally out?
― Telephone thing, Saturday, 19 April 2008 06:43 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah dude. it is not his most consistent release, but some of the tracks bang. i would say it is worth it for "say it!" and "first time," but i'm a pretty huge dillaphile so i don't know if that is a good recommendation.
― davie, Saturday, 19 April 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link
