What's with the "Only" hate?

it's a bad song with bad raps

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 22 December 2014 08:40 (nine years ago) link

sincerity and emotional honesty don't correlate with artistic quality is the thing

obv i may be overrating "mona lisa" and "put you in a room" due to their oddness so they're subject to deletion

wayne's verse on "only" is so incredibly terrible

― you say tomato/i say imago (upper mississippi sh@kedown)

I dunno -- I'm really feeling this track. As usual with any listenable Wayne in the last few years it's timbre that matters for me, and I chuckle every time I hear the line about pissing greatness like gold is yellow or about Hollygrove as holy Mecca.

- What's with the "Only" hate? I see it as the next chapter in Nicki's gaze-flipping... it's an uncomfortable listen and I kinda like that. Loved the duct tape bit and generally enjoy the delightful belligerence of Nicki's Bad Punchlines. I feel like people are jumping on the duct tape line excited to expose Nicki's lack of lyrical chops... c'mon.

i totally get and kind of appreciate that the song was Nicki's chance to kind of refute the popular notion that she's involved in constant Young Money orgies, and that it would make more of a statement of Drake and Wayne were on the song backing up what she's saying, but somehow it all goes horribly awry in the execution. and i WISH "duct tape" was the worst or only clunker on the song, but i think at this point i'm more horrified that she does the "wouldn't _____ if their name was ____" thing twice and fucks it up both times with words that have never been anybody's name ever. i feel like the focus on Nicki as a punchline rapper has always been a little misguided, because her best lines tend to tell a little story or have vivid word choices, while her wordplay often leaves me tragically pining for the coherence and economy of language of old Fabolous punchlines.

it's just a bad line and she does go out of her way to call attention to it, almost purposefully, but I guess i thought her chops were sort of beyond dispute? (her skills as a rapper/lyricist)

that whole verse is unspeakably bad

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 December 2014 16:32 (nine years ago) link

i actually think the hook is great and should have been used on a better song or at least a song where it made more sense

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 December 2014 16:32 (nine years ago) link

wamables

this sounds like an off-brand cheddar snack

several nicki songs i like to love have a terrible line or two but "only" fails in the other direction as well in that it doesn't have a single line from anyone that even nearly delights me after her opening statement

lex pretend, Monday, 22 December 2014 17:22 (nine years ago) link

"Only" hook is pretty whatever imo, maybe it would sound good if it and the beat didn't sound like they were dropped in from completely different songs.

some dude, Monday, 22 December 2014 17:32 (nine years ago) link

"only" hook is awful, both undercooked and overwrought, like uh most of the hooks on this record

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 22 December 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

yeah praising the "only" hook is an even more insane opinion than praising wayne or nicki on it to me

the best thing about the song is the beat, which isn't even any good

"only" is the evil twin of "low" to me, so many superficial similarities except everything amazing about the former - beat, hook, nicki - has been made appalling

lex pretend, Monday, 22 December 2014 21:46 (nine years ago) link

"only" "low" and "throw sum mo" all sound the same, feature nicki, and are pretty trash imo

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 December 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

So for all the talk of this flopping, it only sold 7,000 less than Roman Reloaded did its first week.

that's if you look at the 'equivalent units' number (which includes track sales/streaming) that billboard now uses for the billboard 200. its sales were 194k. still that's pretty darn good considering the circumstances.

dyl, Wednesday, 24 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

Oh word. I still don't understand these new charts.

i guess but isnt killing someone on their own track always a story ...

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 02:35 (nine years ago) link

nicki and kanye have both talked about how he arduously coached her into writing that verse, so the idea of that song existing without kanye is pretty theoretical anyway (although i think "monster"'s status as being somehow way above anything else she's done is greatly exaggerated). it's a shame kanye is exec producing a tyga album when he should really be doing a nicki album.

un chill goon (some dude), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 02:50 (nine years ago) link

agree w all of the above

although i think "monster"'s status as being somehow way above anything else she's done is greatly exaggerated

ikr even some of her other features around that time like "bottoms up" were basically on the same tier

dyl, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 05:44 (nine years ago) link

yesss "bottoms up" was def my contraristan pick for favorite nicki verse of 2010

un chill goon (some dude), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 06:19 (nine years ago) link

where have they talked about the coaching aspect??

Jacques_Lamure, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 06:55 (nine years ago) link

and yeah, she had like a dozen great features in that run

Jacques_Lamure, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 06:56 (nine years ago) link

i also like her "hello good morning" verse just as much

prolego, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 09:59 (nine years ago) link

wait, wait, hold on, maybe they didn’t get that here
like eleven hundred horses when i switch that gear
i just swerve on them sorta like i missed that deer

hope the back half picks up a bit

man

that "not afraid" song by eminem ruined hip hop

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link

anaconda is probably the best song after all huh

trini dem girls would be good w/o the whiny singing chorus they tacked in there

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 20:17 (nine years ago) link

maybe Nicki actually should've patterned the album after The Blueprint in a more direct way than just referencing the title. there's like six "Song Cry"s on this instead of one.

oh my god her command of the stage has improved exponentially on this tour, that was actually incredible (apart from the ballads section)

"lookin' ass" live >>>>>>>>
the transition from "flawless (remix)" into "dance (a$$)" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
her many many gifable faces >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
lecturing us about staying in school and believing in ourselves and then singing a song about blowing your rent money on clubbing >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I'll be back at eleven, you just act like a peasant
Got a bow on my panties, because my ass is a present
Yeah it's gooder than Meagan, you look good when you're beggin'
I be laughing when you beggin' me to just put the head in
Let me sit on your face, it's ok you can play with it
When I'm bouncin' it, chill out and don't you make a mistake with it
Let me see what you're workin' with, If I'm ridin', I'm murkin' it
Slow grindin', I'm twerkin' it, yeah I bagged him, I Birkin'd it

when i listen to this i usually listen to this stretch: get on your knees, feeling myself, only, want some more, four door, buy a heart, trini, anaconda. and them maybe skip to truffle butter. all good songs imo

Yes, missing Nicki's point about race in the MTV Video nominations; and then when pushing female solidarity (ignoring her own jabs sometimes aimed at other females)

curmudgeon, Thursday, 23 July 2015 01:04 (nine years ago) link

i mean some of Nicki's tweets were very clearly referencing Taylor ("When the 'other' girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination") so i dunno why it was so wrong for her to react, even if she didn't have the best possible reaction.

teenage good-ass kinja turtles (some dude), Thursday, 23 July 2015 01:35 (nine years ago) link

Taylor didn't have the sense to recognize that yes, even she might benefit from qualities other than her skills

Of the 31 overall wins for VOTY, 8 have been wins by black performers

The Best Pop Video award has never been won by a black artist in the category’s 15 years of existence. (It is worth noting that dancehall artist Bounty Killer, was a featured artist on a winning No Doubt song in 2002.)

is this supposed to be a shocking, damning statistic?
