oops sorry about that one
I think some people's votes were for the original Parliaments version but I went with the later, more "canonical" one
I was the only voter for Mutiny? :( That album is as good as any mid period funkadelic album. Even Clinton thinks so.

― Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 22:43 (nine years ago) link
Shame about the paucity of ballots, but this is turning out nicely, and I'm glad to see that a couple of my more left-field picks got another vote here and there (hello "Catch A Keeper," "Roto-Rooter," and "Shine-O-Myte"!). Like Cosmic Slop, I turned in a full 100-song ballot. My self-imposed rules were probably more stringent than most, but they're consistent with where I've long defined the boundaries of what constitutes a P-Funk record- every track had to have some involvement from George Clinton even if that only meant a nominal producer's credit (I made an exception for the Sweat Band - produced by Bootsy, featuring several long-time P-Funk members, and released on Clinton's short-lived Uncle Jam label - and a couple self-produced Bootsy tracks from when he was still very much in the P-Funk orbit). Hence there's no Zapp (Bootsy coproduced their first record, sure, but they were never really part of the P-Funk mob despite Roger's marginal contributions to one or two Funkadelic tracks) or Mutiny (who have a more legitimate claim to the collective mantle). I guess there's no reason for me to mention this except that I still find it kinda weird that anyone considers Zapp to be P-Funk. Great band, though.

Could only vote for 40 tracks...lack of time I'm afraid...sad to see "What About It" so low down the list...love that groove!
― X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:04 (nine years ago) link
Just catching up.
Three songs in my top 15 already placed that didn't get a single other vote. Not surprised that Singing Another Song didn't as it's a bonus track on Up For the Down Stroke. Such a catchy song. Soul Mate and I Misjudged You are the other two I had up there that I'm a little more surprised about. I love their ballads and these are two of the very best. I'm surprised Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication is so low. I just assumed all the songs off Mothership would be really high.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:44 (nine years ago) link
Oh I had One Fun at a Time in my top 10 too. Seems like I have quite a strange taste in their stuff. I'm already feeling like I might be the only person that didn't vote for a song that could well at the top of the list.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link
I had no idea there were cd-only bonus tracks for any of the parliament albums. None of my cd copies have any!
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link
Soul Mate is good but I subbed it out on my ballot for other stuff I liked more from the same album.
you might be alone on I Misjudged You tho. Never dug that one.

I'm not sure which issues I have of the Parliament albums now (In a different country to my CD collection right now) Think that most of the ones I have do come with a couple of bonus tracks. Another bonus track I had high on my list is the upbeat version of Baby I Owe You Something Good. It totally transforms a good song to an amazing one for me.

How many votes did Testify get? Surely more than 1?
― kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 04:27 (nine years ago) link
Hey Shakey - shouldn't there be two votes for "One Fun at A Time"? Kitchen Person confirmed that he had it in his top 10, and I had it at #43. I just checked my ballot, which you confirmed you had received. Seems like the points total for that track, then, should be at least 157 (90+67), no?
― Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 04:32 (nine years ago) link
XP I had "Testify" @ #3. I didn't specify the version, although if I had, it would have been for the original (the remake is hot tho). I've already placed a couple other "one voters"--"Children of Productions" & "There Is Nothing...".

Great poll, Shakey! Thanks for doing this.
I feel like I need to (further) clarify some of my comments from yesterday regarding the early Funkadelic records. I actually think the Westbound Funkadelic records, taken as a whole, are stronger than the Warners Funkadelics. I just think the Westbounds hit their stride with Cosmic Slop. After Funkadelic moved to Warners, it was Parliament that made the more cohesive records, but I don't think that's necessarily down to the vocalists - it's more that Funkadelic started to lose its own distinct identity. The only one that's nearly as dark and scabrous as the Westbounds is Electric Spanking, which you can dance to besides.

Excellent poll! Thanks for running it. Forever it will live in the Chocolate City of my heart.
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 10 December 2014 00:24 (nine years ago) link
Yeah, great job, Shakes. "Can You Get To That" getting to no. 4, wow, did not see that one coming! I can't even remember where I placed it. My no. 1 was "Chocolate City", lyrically (and vocally, George was never better) just the perfect combination of funniness, profundity and absurdity, and musically just not like anything else, lots of great funk bands around at the time but none of them could have come up with anything like "Chocolate City" - they didn't have Bernie + Bootsy for a start.
― Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 00:59 (nine years ago) link
this may perhaps be an unpopular opinion but when it comes to the Warner Bros Funkadelic albums I think they suffer (moreso than the Parliament records) from the lack of the original Parliament vocalists. Those guys had a grit and old-school gospel/doo-wop flavor that complemented the darker, grimier and just outright weirder lyrical concerns that typically got reserved for Funkadelic records, and I don't think any of the new guys that came forward really got that.
Know where you're coming from but listening to "Getten to Know You" from Clones today and, Jesus, that is a great vocal from Garry Shider - and I don't even think I voted for that track - Garry and Glenn Goins were both such great singers.
― Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 01:11 (nine years ago) link
My no. 1 was "Chocolate City"
For years, I had 3 note piano riff as my cell alert on my old motorola phone. It was perfect.
My biggest regret now is that I didnt put Free Alterations from Computer Games higher. That is one of my 3 or 4 favorites now, but I wasn't fully aware of its greatness when composing my ballot.

Thanks very much for hosting this huge poll, Shakes.
my ballot - for the sheer joy of wasting time I added where my 20 picks placed:
1 I can move you (if you let me) #622 Mommy what's a funkadelic #483 I wanna know if it's good to you? #184 placebo syndrome #585 funkentelechy #216 hit it and quit it #147 presence of a brain #718 unfunky ufo #449 back in our minds #96 10 free your mind and your ass will follow #1611 friday night august the 14th #4712 maggot brain #113 stuffs and things #6114 the goose #3515 all your goodies are gone #6616 give up the funk #1517 one nation under a groove #318 mothership connection (star child) #819 eulogy and light #9320 you and your folks, me and my folks #26
for your pleasure in irritatingly subjective nerd analysis I added the following essential info ("essential" in the meaning implied by the album title The Essential Billy Joel):
average placement of my top five: 41average placement of my 6-10: 48average placement of my 11-15: 42average placement of my 16-20: 29
conclusion: 16-20, with three songs I stuck on to keep it real (i.e. acknowledge the giant faves that continue to reach me....for example, NOT flash light or atomic dog or can you get to that) placed the best, by quite a margin.
HOWEVER! my most verily 5avorite 5ive did 2econd best amongst the 4our groups! This is reassuring. I only want so much mild specialness, not flat out isolation 'n starvation.
The stuff that did worst by a long shot was my almost equally beloved 6 - 10 (but 11-15 would have done the worst without the maggot brain).
I'm looking forward to exploring the picks of those who know enough to make 100 song ballots! Have already been much educated by this poll... And remember, the bigger the headache, the bigger the pill.

Looking forward to reading through this, I've been more than a little busy over the last month or so and I thought I was going to manage to get a ballot in for this (even got as far as drawing up a whole list), but for some reason struggled to get them in some kind of order (there was a lot of stuff to consider!) and ended up missing the deadline. Having a quick glance over the results though, I've no complaints! Maybe it would have been easier to have separate Parliament and Funkadelic polls, but I guess that would have missed the point!
