ooh stickers!

piscesx, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 20:27 (eleven years ago)

What's the point of adding stupid fake ass "VIP" passes to things like this? Never got that. I always think of the printer getting a request to make these things.

Daft Punk: "We'd like you to print this VIP pass!"
Printer: "Cool! Is it for your next tour?"
Daft Punk: "Uhm no, it's a replica of VIP pass we once handed out, like ten years ago."
Printer: "*crickets*... Ok..."

you can look at the VIP pass and remember when you actually had that VIP pass for that 1997 show and how good it felt before your company pets.com failed.

this album is still wonderful

Agreed. I've been going back to it a lot recently.

just Giorgio over and over here

the most painstaking, humorless people in the world (lukas), Monday, 2 March 2015 19:36 (eleven years ago)

this album is still ridiculous garbage. "give life" was a promising start, though

soyrev, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:38 (eleven years ago)

promising solely for it's message? the rest of the album does not seem so far removed from the opening track, except maybe in short flourishes.

I guess hating Pharrell's vocals could ruin 'Lose Yourself to Dance' and 'Get Lucky', which seem most similar though

i really wish that whole documentary were available with english subtitles

example (crüt), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 14:52 (eleven years ago)

the documentary is pretty cool, yeah.
from a french perspective, it was quite fun (and wtf) to have all these interviews and comments from big stars and then... sheila !
I didn't even know he had made an album for her...
I also didn't know he was behind inxs' "original sin".

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 15:32 (eleven years ago)

I should have put this on the Nile thread instead of the Daft thread, I guess..

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 15:33 (eleven years ago)

Am I missing something? All I saw was a sub 1-min video of a Daft Punk robot typing at a console while "Why?" played in the background.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 16:03 (eleven years ago)

yeah the "video" is nothing. it's part of a French Nile Rodgers documentary.

example (crüt), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 16:14 (eleven years ago)

Surely an equivalent of this documentary has been made in english at some point ? Especially since all the interviews are in english !
I mean it's cool and all but there must be many other interviews of Nile and all the other people involved on the subject.

Among the best stuff are his comments about all the things he's done until now.
With such an incredible history of hits he could sound like an asshole (or an hypocrite) but he manages to appear both proud and likeable.
A bit like a kid bragging.
Another nice thing is that throughout the documentary he almost always plays his (unplugged) guitar during the interviews.

(OK this definitely belongs to the NL thread !)

two weeks pass...

Recently saw Daft Punk's 2006/7 Coachella performance / Alive tour described as:

The live set that changed the direction and velocity of all electronic dance music

Seems to be a pretty widespread idea in the US, and of course I don't know if it rings more true over there (given Detroit and Chicago's musical history I doubt it) but at least I can say that for me that album/show had NO impact at all on the scene for house/techno/"EDM" - only DP song I ever think I heard at a DJ set is "Revolution 909".

So yeah, to me it seems like a very widespread misconception or a US-specific truth (in this way reminding me a bit about the relation between Kelly Clarkson and popism which in a Danish context=0) and of course I don't mind really, like I don't mind people describing RAM as an EDM record, but it strikes me as a bit silly and I wanted to share that.

niels, Monday, 18 May 2015 10:08 (eleven years ago)

Alive 2007 definitely felt like a huge moment for them and (IMO) validation of a career that's been kinda up and down

frogbs, Monday, 18 May 2015 12:25 (eleven years ago)

putting a DJ-based act on stage surrounded by such monstrous stagecraft following three days of mostly guitar bands was pretty revolutionary

electric daisy carnival had been around for a decade but it quickly changed in to something way bigger with much wider appeal after 2007

besides Daft Punk's huge live show, the other big change for US EDM was Skrillex

sadly, the roots of techno and house have zero bearing on the current US EDM scene

"putting a DJ-based act on stage surrounded by such monstrous stagecraft following three days of mostly guitar bands was pretty revolutionary"

otm

soyrev, Monday, 18 May 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

a nifty turning point historically, too, since daft punk's music is so heavy on guitars

soyrev, Monday, 18 May 2015 17:02 (eleven years ago)

i wasnt there but a few friends were and they said people were just losing their minds, one friend told me he saw a boyfriend-girlfriend couple sobbing together while dancing and kissing at the same time when "one more time" came on

ive been to a lot of shows but i'm pretty sure ive never witnessed something like that

xpost What did the Chem Brothers do at the peak of their popularity? Or Orbital, et al? Iirc they were all lauded for their live performances, but I never saw them perform.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 18 May 2015 17:19 (eleven years ago)

Both of them melted your face off.

DJP, Monday, 18 May 2015 17:29 (eleven years ago)

And then I was never able to see them again. :(

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 18 May 2015 17:34 (eleven years ago)

Orbital at Glastonbury 1994 was actually the UK version of this very thing.

kraudive, Monday, 18 May 2015 18:40 (eleven years ago)

Must be tough.

good times

“audience participation” otherwise known as “touching” (forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 May 2015 19:38 (eleven years ago)

daft punk was the entry electronic/dance music act for a lot of ppl of my cultural cohort (current late 20s/early 30s college/indie-rock type kids) and the live tour (i was a senior in college) was the sort of turning moment as i remember

max, Monday, 18 May 2015 20:57 (eleven years ago)

that's not quite the same thing as DP being the "EDM" gateway drug but it was a similar dynamic i think

max, Monday, 18 May 2015 20:57 (eleven years ago)

And then I was never able to see them again. :(

doubt Chems live show this year is going to be any different with just Tom barely visible than it would have been with both of them still barely visible

( who ALSO my boss and his sister!) (sic), Monday, 18 May 2015 23:37 (eleven years ago)

What, what? Are they down a Bro?

Anyway, I was making a literal joke, since Dan said they melted my face off.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 01:10 (eleven years ago)

ah.

Ed has stopped touring, still recording. The dude who's done the incredible visuals with them on the last tours is still going.

soyrev, Friday, 22 May 2015 04:29 (eleven years ago)

i seriously do not understand the slow trickle of tasteful & pricey merchandise that keeps dripping out 2 years after the hype cycle for this album started

gr8080, Friday, 22 May 2015 13:56 (eleven years ago)

but i'm definitely buying a daft punk coffee mug

gr8080, Friday, 22 May 2015 14:01 (eleven years ago)

Daft Punk was also the entry point for indie rock kids ca. 1995. Guys I knew who listened only to like, Pavement and Jesus & Mary Chain and The Cure were suddenly way into them. Which as a newly converted techno snob of course I scoffed at.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 22 May 2015 14:14 (eleven years ago)
