all these puddles the clown videos are pretty great

everybody loves lana del raymond (s.clover), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

9,000,000 views for that clown video, which probably nets them at least $50,000. A lot of that is going to Lorde or whoever, but this must be one of the most profitable ways to make money nowadays.

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:20 (eleven years ago)

to make music, I mean, but yeah also money

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:21 (eleven years ago)

puddles is selling out shows in NYC; he's become a pretty serious draw on the nu-cabaret scene
i've seen him live a time or two, dude can sing

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:59 (eleven years ago)

i'm simultaneously happy for puddles and resigned/not-really-surprised/but-kinda-surprised/but-what-did-i-expect with regards to the existence of a thing that is called the "nu-cabaret scene" such that it has shows that can sell out.

alpine static, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

Why don't they include youtube streaming income in income?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:46 (eleven years ago)

I mean it seems weird to mention income from itunes sales but not that

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:47 (eleven years ago)

Then again, it may not be a huge source -- they have 100 million views but it's spread out over 5 + years, and I think the per view payment is pretty low.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:51 (eleven years ago)

maybe they don't get much because they don't write the songs they're playing

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:56 (eleven years ago)

i can't believe i actually read a "we haven't made it, we're making it" article for a cover band

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:59 (eleven years ago)

I was kinda surprised they aren't pulling in more money by now tbh. I mean we must have hit peak pamplemousse, I would think, and they seem like pretty much the kings of the lolcover.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:00 (eleven years ago)

i wonder how many cover bands put six people on salary for a month-long tour

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:02 (eleven years ago)

Probably the kind of bands that are just two people and need to hire backup musicians who aren't invested in the band

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:04 (eleven years ago)

We, the creative class, are finding ways to make a living making music, drawing webcomics, writing articles, coding games, recording podcasts. Most people don’t know our names or faces. We are not on magazine covers at the grocery store. We are not rich, and we are not famous.

We are the mom and pop corner store version of “the dream.” If Lady Gaga is McDonald’s, we’re Betty’s Diner. And we’re open 24/7.

We have not “made it.” We’re making it.

And by it we mean "Pharrell Mashup."

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:04 (eleven years ago)

do they really need four extra salaried musicians? Wouldn't loops be more charming and appropriate to their shtick?

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:06 (eleven years ago)

Their expenses are definitely a little lavish for "DIY" -- they have their own lights, there's obviously no couch surfing going on, etc.

I can't help but think they're lying and stashing the rest of their profits in the Cayman Islands somewhere, I just smell it on them.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:06 (eleven years ago)

oh missed this bit

We could have played a duo show instead of hiring six people to tour with us. That would have saved us over $50,000, but it was important at this stage in Pomplamoose’s career to put on a wild and crazy rock show.

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:07 (eleven years ago)

The idea that they're just "investing in future tours" also made me snicker a little too, seems very foolish if that's legitimately what they think they're doing.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:07 (eleven years ago)

Like it's hard for me to imagine them getting tons bigger than they are now.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:07 (eleven years ago)

i just can't understand why they bothered to write this article. "hey guys we're not as rich as you think." ...good?

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:08 (eleven years ago)

maybe people will stop thinking wacky covers of pop hits is the way to millions, and realize it for the difficult but rewarding work it is

must be nice to make $6,326 per video you post on patreon (a company with $15 million in series a funding that you also happen to run)

Number None, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 22:50 (eleven years ago)

Patreon is a pretty new platform, and I'm still figuring out the best way to use it.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 23:04 (eleven years ago)

Right, so that's $27,812 per month between the two of them. As long as they post their 6 vids a month. Good business if you can get it but how many people would be able to keep up that kind of workrate?

everything, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 23:10 (eleven years ago)

Wait where are you getting $27,812?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 23:17 (eleven years ago)

Pomplemoose gets $6326/vid, Nataly gets $2205/vid, Jack gets $5375/vid. They each do 2 vids a month, 6 in total every month. That = $27,812.00

everything, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 23:41 (eleven years ago)

It's strange that Jack has double the patrons as Nataly but I guess the reason is that if you patronise him then you get all his chatter about recording and editing and so on? This guy has people who pay $200/month to have two 60 minutes skype sessions per month...

everything, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 23:43 (eleven years ago)

Oh I thought they each did more like 1 vid per month. In any case it's a a pretty damn healthy income from one source

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 23:57 (eleven years ago)

All that for chewing up the recent past and spitting it into peoples mouths. Earmouths.

from the straining pagan waistbands (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 00:18 (eleven years ago)

How much do you reckon it costs them to make those videos?

How much do you reckon it would cost us for them to stop making videos?

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 02:32 (eleven years ago)

Ha, are you going to start a patreonkickstarter campaign?

Junior Dadaismus (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 02:46 (eleven years ago)

Most amazing thing about the Poomplamoose tour breakdown thing is that I've learned there are people who would actually pay to see Poomplamoose.

kickstopper

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 15:05 (eleven years ago)

We built the tour budget ourselves and modeled projected revenue against expenses. Neither of us had experience with financial modeling, so we just did the best we could.

why run a 20+ stop tour without hard projections? you have a booking agent, who you thank profusely, but you didn't think management might be necessary? ending a tour 12k in the hole is completely insane. the numbers in play there sound either entirely facetious or the dumbest kind of rookie mistakes.

Face facts poptimism hacks, your a scam. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

also you are apparently founder of like some well funded startup are you kidding me with this aw shucks what are all these numbers how does dollar work

celfie tucker 48 (s.clover), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

Yeah it really reads like he thought it was ok to put no thought whatsoever into what made financial sense on tour (bc you know, it's an investment in future tours!). He sounds like one of those people taking out a giant HELOC to put in a new open plan kitchen with viking range and wine fridge in a middle class neighborhood, or buying a $2000 suit for job interviews. Which would just seem dumb, except the whole Patreon thing makes it actually seem disingenuous. It's like their business model depends on making sure people don't think they're making a lot of money.
