otm hurting 2 re: the "channeling realness" problem

Cohen's writing is becoming so incoherent and laced with conservative ideology I feel like he's morphing into Gavin McInnes

fgti, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:18 (eleven years ago)

Also: great RS article, Whiney

fgti, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:19 (eleven years ago)

man, i don't like this stuff at all. sounds like juggalofest stuff to me. i read whiney's thing though. glad they are happy and not poor no more. everyone should be happy.

scott seward, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:29 (eleven years ago)

from the fact review:

Is there anyone on earth right now who sounds like they’re having a better time than El-P and Killer Mike? And if so, how about that for a turnaround?

a turnaround for... anyone on earth?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:30 (eleven years ago)

xxpost um wut

there are definitely criticisms i could see someone levying against RTJ2 and run the jewels in general but sounding like shit off of psychopathic records is not one of them

and also pointsman, octopi don't bark (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)

I am sometimes amazed by how many rappers (*cough* white rappers) really emulate El-P or Aesop Rock's flows.

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

Aesop Rock is a dude whose flow I could never take. Should I reconsider?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:40 (eleven years ago)

would actually rather listen to this as far as 2014 releases going back in time go. don't know who the juggalo with the weird eyeball is, but he adds some 21st century oxy kid rap fan authenticity to the proceedings.

scott seward, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:41 (eleven years ago)

idk this is the Run the Jewels thread, I have no other opinions here xp

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:41 (eleven years ago)

xpost im never going to find anything bad to say about onyx, so thats a fair rejoinder

and also pointsman, octopi don't bark (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:49 (eleven years ago)

and i'm not saying the run the jewels stuff sounds like actual clown rap, just that i can see it going over big at an intimate gathering of juggalos. they like that kinda stuff.

scott seward, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:01 (eleven years ago)

yeah I bet they would do OK at gathering of juggalos

my friend went once to help do road crew/set up stuff for an indie wrestling promotion and he said everyone got killed except Ice-T

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

(everyone not on psychopathic records)

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

I think a lot of legit hip-hop acts play the clown circuit now though, don't they?

scott seward, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:13 (eleven years ago)

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:39 (eleven years ago)

I was actually looking for a picture of a spring-loaded fist popping out of a box but I found that instead

Vomits of a Missionary (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:39 (eleven years ago)

xp if you have to ask...

Vomits of a Missionary (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:40 (eleven years ago)

xxxpost haha yup, pic was close at hand thanks to the just-updated trolling canseco thread

and also pointsman, octopi don't bark (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:40 (eleven years ago)

I like this quite a bit more that RTJ1... El-P's beats feel a little less clumsy than usual. Wish he'd keep his mouth shut though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:54 (eleven years ago)

my fave el-p thing will always be that instrumental company flow album. i think he's fine as a producer of fucked up sci-fi/industrial beats and stuff.

scott seward, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:16 (eleven years ago)

it's amazing how El-P beats at 80-90 bpm feel kinda dated but El-P beats (w/ similar textures) at 120-140 bpm fit really well into the contemporary landscape.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:21 (eleven years ago)

I still listen to Cold Vein once in a while, love the beats on that. Don't really find them "dated" tbh, not much else really sounds like them.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:22 (eleven years ago)

how fast was deep space 9mm? cos el-p was doing faster bomb squad-ish beats back in 2004.

and little johnny from the hospital still sounds amazing btw.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:29 (eleven years ago)

theres something much more smirky about el-p as a rapper these days though, less angst, more smug/smirk

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:30 (eleven years ago)

deep space 9mm probably my fave el-p instrumental

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

just checked and it's like 116, but it doesn't have that half-time feel.

sci-fi boom-bap sounds throwback to me (or at least proto-Brainfeeder), but noisy trap (for lack of a better term) beats fit right into the sound of, like, festival EDM and mainstream rap.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:38 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Jordan you basicLly hit the nail on the head w/r/t the broad appeal of this album that I was trying to argue upthread with RT

...are you chris ott

and also pointsman, octopi don't bark (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 30 October 2014 17:53 (eleven years ago)

I have to admit, although I think he's a sock, the sarcastic amazon review threw me for a loop, like actually in-character doing a tongue-in-cheek amazon review is next level trolling

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 October 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)

if andy kaufman were alive to be on ilx he would prob be RT

oh shit i think i just broke my brain with the idea of that

Vomits of a Missionary (bernard snowy), Thursday, 30 October 2014 21:20 (eleven years ago)

I don't think RT is a sock. Probably an old Hip Hop Infinity board refugee
