their touring drummer is Emily Epstein -- she's been playing drums for Ty for a few years -- she moved down to LA last year

Ty Segall is a very good drummer though

Super solid fun record! Drags a bit in spots maybe - but good dirty sound, really hooky tunes - almost verging on a scrappy sprightly version of Deep Purple or Sabbath riffage. I haven't heard everything, but Manipulator seems like a breakthrough of sorts.

Brio2, Friday, 24 October 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)

Seems like everyone very keen to tag this as ' break through' when it actually appears to be struggling for any more traction than previous records. Everyone seems to get that he is a solid songwriter but he does not seem to have found X FaCtor song. Not that I think that is necessarily some kind of noble goal to crave or is necessary but it is curious to me how much of the narrative around this record is about taking things to the ' next level'

Hinklepicker, Friday, 24 October 2014 21:20 (eleven years ago)

It does seem like a bit more thought out and cohesive and tuneful record than others to me - and maybe a bit more conventional. I don't think anyone really expects a huge hit record out of the guy.

Fwiw,I wanted to go see hij
m recently and he instantly sold out a club he'd played before to solid but far from sold out crowd, also have a couple of friends who are into more commercial band like black keys, qotsa, etc get into him now

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 25 October 2014 14:20 (eleven years ago)

Oh well sounds like he is doing better with thiS than I thought then. Good for him.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 25 October 2014 19:37 (eleven years ago)

it might be more momentum than the last album specifically, but i'm hearing a lot more friends/coworkers talking about the guy.

I like Mikal Cronin's last two records a lot more than any of this stuff

akm, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)

Hmm... I tried one Mikal Cronin song on Youtube. It was OK I guess, but it didn't sound anything like Fuzz. I was a bit skeptical if I needed a double-album's worth of more Fuzz but I ended up listening all the way through to the NPR stream.

o. nate, Thursday, 22 October 2015 01:32 (ten years ago)

Cronin's debut is excellent, heavy Segall-strafed power-pop. His second was pleasant, but I found the third dull, though I didn't listen to it enough to be fair. He's no Ty.

Interesting production. Kinda new wave Devo doing garage. Melodies might be the downside.we shall see..

never really listened to him before tonight, i got the death by audio 3xLP and it came with a 12" of his first show in new york in 2008. it's rad- i love the context and the vibe- not many people there, crowd chatting a bit, segall says he's psyched to be in new york. dude has a massive discography, what's a good place to start?

flappy bird, Thursday, 24 November 2016 04:12 (nine years ago)

imo can't go wrong with anything from 2009 to 2014

reverse shark attack, melted, goodbye bread, twins, hair, slaughterhouse, manipulator are all great

the late great, Thursday, 24 November 2016 04:30 (nine years ago)

Melted's a great starting place, also the Singles comp on Goner, or the live at Aisle 5 LP.

stevie, Thursday, 24 November 2016 10:00 (nine years ago)

Melted is what got me hooked.

"freedom's goblin" is a terrific album. i wouldn't have even bothered checking it out but a co-worker put it on and now i can't stop listening. it goes so many different and wonderful places! and the songwriting is really stellar. leagues beyond the yelps and hackneyed "psych" tropes i've come to expect from him, john dwyer et al.

His covers album is really good.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 26 November 2018 22:34 (seven years ago)

I thought the covers album was really boring, like a high school covers band. Ty at his best is brilliant - Freedom's Goblin often is. But Fudge Sandwich felt like a certain period of Robert Pollard stuff, where he's more into making "product" than actual good records (tho the Lennon cover was strong).

New album is devoid of guitars

If I hadn't read about the lack of guitars beforehand, I'm not sure I would have guessed from listening.

This guy has kind of fallen off the ilx radar a little it seems, new one ("Hello, Hi") is another really good one. Mostly acoustic, pretty chill, but still filled with gems.
