did anyone ever really rate him as a lyricist/singer? I always had a hard time taking RATM seriously, they seemed mostly a vehicle for sloganeering.

heh, looking at the tracklist i saw "BOOTS" and thought it was Boots Riley, which would have fit with some of the other features.

i'm listening to it in reverse order for some reason and it's great so far.

Yeah, tracks 9/10/11 are remarkably strong

Uninspired try to be cool production. Only thing ElP ever did was Cold Vein, and it was only great because he was kept off the mic, everyone knew that. His one v on that album was ok though.

This is really good, might be my favorite RTJ yet. I really like Cochemea Gastelum's tenor sax on the closing track, it does a nice job of linking the record back to some of the more impassioned spiritual jazz of the '70s that is a forefather of this record in a few ways.

funny I think this is my least fave RTJ despite a few great tracks

also every time I hear "Goonies Vs ET" I keep yearning for a takeoff that never quite happens

I'm on my second spin and so far I'm with Simon. It's good and its timing is undeniable but beat-wise El-P's scaled greater heights in the past.
