D'Angelo - Black Messiah (2014)

I saw this guy live on tuesday night which was a bucket list gig for me - it's the first time he's ever played in Australia. He was 70 minutes late and elongated all the songs to ridiculous lengths (I feel like Untitled lasted 15 minutes or something), but it was totally glorious, one of the best shows I've seen in ages.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone's written about it yet, the only article I've seen on the show is from TMZ making cheap shots about his weight - which, well, he doesn't look like he did in the Untitled video anymore but we've known that for years, and he seemed happy, healthy enough and uninhibited to me.

I was standing just in front of the VIP section where I noticed Angie Stone lurking at one point.

Black Messiah is a good/intriguing title for indicating where D'Angelo is going with this record but as a Kanye title it would just seem kind of on-the-nose and redundant with Yeezus imo

so every December we're gonna have messiahs, it seems!

he's had a steady live band (chris dave on drums, pino, etc) but it sounds like it's a different crew in the studio (some ?uestlove drum tracks, some James Gadson {which i can't wait to hear}, etc).

may have mentioned this elsewhere but when i moved to NYC from middle tennessee, i bought a one way bus ticket and took two bags and a discman with a freshly bought copy of voodoo which had just come out
i listened to it more or less for 24 hours nonstop

Considering all the pressure and expectations were in no small part what accounted for all the false starts and delays, it seems like tempting fate to name an album "Black Messiah."

I'm actually looking forward to this album. D'Angelo's always been one of my blind spots.

Really hope the imagery he's putting out with this has some substance to it that's actually reflected in the album, cause otherwise...

Black Messiah sounds like a purposeful title. I don't expect an overload of sexytimes jams.

iirc he floated the title James River like 5 years ago and hasn't said that was the title since then, but since it was one of the only shreds of detail anybody had about the album the title kinda stuck in the public mind
