The truth usually is :/

Cousin Slappy, Monday, 20 October 2014 04:10 (eleven years ago)

i heard a fair bit of suicide on her LP, at least just in the sonic textures

I dunno. (amateurist), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 05:12 (eleven years ago)

Ferreira says that she is re-teaming with producers Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen, who helmed the entirety of Night Time, My Time, and has gone back and forth with French DJ Gesaffelstein about finding some studio time for the new project. Last March, Ferreira also began collaborating with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes of the iconic Scottish alt-rock group Primal Scream, and now describes Gillespie as a new mentor whom she communicated with throughout her tour.

“The reason I like working with them is because there’s absolutely no pressure,” she says of Innes and Gillespie, the latter of whom served as the drummer of Jesus and Mary Chain in the 1980’s. “It’s nice to walk in somewhere and they’re not like, ‘Okay, your label is harassing me about this and that.’ I set it up without anyone else involved, so we just sit and write in a room and there’s no pressure. It’s also just really cool talking to (Gillespie)! Jesus and Mary Chain is one of my favorite bands ever, so at first I was a little nervous. It’s really nice to meet with someone and not be disappointed by it, to have them meet every expectation.”

is that album art official upthread? hope the record comes out this year...

flappy bird, Monday, 1 February 2016 19:23 (ten years ago)

i think she said it is not the album art. it's sweet though

i am surprised and delighted at how much i like the primal scream song

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 1 February 2016 19:24 (ten years ago)

The Primal Scream single has the same problem as most of their songs, it needs less Bobby.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 1 February 2016 19:25 (ten years ago)

There's not much song to this song, but it will do.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 1 February 2016 19:33 (ten years ago)

TBF this is probably better than any Primal Scream song in 15+ years, to the extent I'm wondering if Sky gave them the song. Either that or it was written by some Sumnerlike ringer. Bobby G has been overproduced which is usually the best way to deal with his voice.

Imagining these two interacting is kinda gross, you can just imagine Sky approaching it with transparent hero worship and Gillespie just lapping up the fact that a person under 30 actually likes Primal Scream as if that's proof of his inherent genius.

Matt DC, Monday, 1 February 2016 19:43 (ten years ago)

Yeah, the song could be way better without Bobby.

Nourry, Monday, 1 February 2016 19:45 (ten years ago)

wonder what the haim song will be like

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 1 February 2016 19:47 (ten years ago)

And then you realise the album is called CHAOSMOSIS and it's like aaah normal service is resumed.

night time my time was one of my favorite records of 2013-2014 but i haven't listened to it much since then. la weekly thing made me go back to it. fuck. this is easily one of the best albums of the decade so far. treeship's post in the other thread said it perfectly - this thing balances so much and hits so many buttons - there isn't a bad song on it. i really, really hope her new record comes out this year

flappy bird, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 05:16 (ten years ago)

100% OTM

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 05:27 (ten years ago)

Although I've kept it (and the ep's/singles) in my current playlist since then.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 05:29 (ten years ago)

Still think every song on the album is better than "Everything Is Embarrassing," which seems to be the song most people (who came late) gravitate towards. ¯\(ツ)/¯

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 05:52 (ten years ago)

lol I'd successfully wiped the song "Obsession" from memory until I revisited the early section of the thread. Her first US label deal was so stupid.

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 06:06 (ten years ago)

xp yeah I don't like "Everything is Embarrassing" at all. I saw her twice that fall - in September opening up for Vampire Weekend at Barclays and in November headlining the 9:30 Club - it was, uhh, night and day! the difference was amazing though - nobody was there except ~100 diehards at thisd stadium show, and even though she played mostly night time stuff, it sorta floated past me. Although I remember "I Blame Myself" and "24 Hours" stuck out. Two months later, everyone knew every word and were begging her to play "I Blame Myself." It was awesome.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 06:31 (ten years ago)

Of course real heads know that the non-album version of Everything is Embarrassing (which came first) is vastly superior

Number None, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 09:52 (ten years ago)

saw her at Pitchfork in summer '13, appalled by er performance. The album was a seismic shock, to say the least. And, yeah, OTM: I didn't top ten it in 2013, now it's essential.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 10:30 (ten years ago)

yeah this album has become a once-a-month listen, everything I'd want in a new JAMC album & more.

2013 was a great year for Ariel Rechtshaid. Anything worth checking out by him from 2014 thru now?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 17:54 (ten years ago)

thank you, btw, to the gross awful sexist hacks at la weekly for reminding me she's playing here next week. just got my tix.

her best song is obv "you're not the one"

You're Not the One reminds me a bit of In A Big Country, and not in a bad way

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 21:14 (ten years ago)

You're Not the One reminds me of a lot of "Public Image", also not in a bad way.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 22:12 (ten years ago)

one of the last CD i have ever bought, got the two disc version. i think it is fine but not one of the best of this decade but maybe i need to play a bit more.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:04 (ten years ago)

I adore "You're Not The One" but it's very twinned with "Heavy Metal Heart" for me, I can't imagine thinking of one as a standout vis a vis the other.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:10 (ten years ago)

Don't sleep on "I Blame Myself," people

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:20 (ten years ago)

i'm not it is a highlight but something like "Omanko" sort of left me cold.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:25 (ten years ago)

"you're not the one" is prob the best sky song but my fav is "love in stereo"

I probably complain upthread about how it doesn't have much of a chorus. it has exactly the right amount of chorus

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:03 (ten years ago)

god i love "omanko"

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:07 (ten years ago)

omanko is the jamc-est one and i tend to loop it like six times in a row, but real highlight (at the moment) is either i blame myself or ain't your right. "we'll see about that won't we" poss my favorite moment.

terrific album yeah. i listened to it for the first time just a few weeks ago and had it in regular rotation by the time the l.a. weekly piece happened. when synchronicity sucks.

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:46 (ten years ago)

every day i hear them saying something else i know

Treeship, Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:19 (ten years ago)

i like the whole album, but that song is really something: vulnerable but bitter... self pity transmogrified into ANGER, which is the only way it ever heals, as anyone who listens to punk already knows

Treeship, Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:21 (ten years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1gDuaY8-V4

i love the pauses on this track. 1:27: "you put my faith... back in..... boys. back in.... boys" followed by that sputtering engine shoegaze guitar effect. i could listen to that forever.

Treeship, Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:32 (ten years ago)

i am also a fan of the album art. weirdos claimed at the time she looked terrified, like she was about to be attacked, but i don't see fear on her face at all. more like anger or disdain or maybe just resolve. almost all of the emotions reflected in the songs can be read into her expression here. it's a good portrait, even if i am not a big fan of gaspar noe overall

Treeship, Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:43 (ten years ago)
