Patchy solo output for sure (and everything from the 90s onwards has been a tragedy), but there's no denying "In The Air Tonight" being a great pop song. Sure, some of the shit he has taken for his solo stuff is deserved, but he did write "In The Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds" after all.

Odd I never mentioned this on the thread before -- one of the more interesting surprises on the radio I ever heard, back in hoary late eighties daze when I thought classic rock radio was the answer, was hearing a typical 'best songs ever that you voted for countdown' and noting that "Stairway to Heaven" did NOT win -- but was second to this song instead.

"In the Air Tonight" creeps me out, but I can't stop listening to it. CLASSIC.

I think this might the all-time best song to listen to while stoned beyond all comprehension. It's got it all: ambient creepiness, vocoder noises, and a total surprise with the fucken DRUMS.

From experience, I can say this is pretty OTM.

jaymc, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Once saw a sex show in Amsterdam that had a very precise choreography set to this song. Intersting and entertaining choice to say the least. If I had been Phil Collins' lawyer, I probably would have started drafting my cease and decist letter on the spot.

I'm intrigued by the "If you told me you were drowning" line.

Surely it's something that you'd scream. Not quietly beckon someone over and suggest to them that, like, they might not mind lending a hand.....

it perplexes me, it does, why individuals profess such adulation for this tune, being that it is sung by such an unattractive man, so fat and bald, aye.

The thing about that ad is that it mirrors the sensate pleasure of eating chocolate. And the gorilla? He's the part of the brain that likes chocolate. He's a lover, too. And he has a quite dignity, but he's also skillful and full of passion.

Also, who was the music supervisor on Risky Business that decided to cut away from "In the Air Tonight" to that fucking Tangerine Dream score...

yeah, but that Tangerine Dream song is also a classic.

That gorilla fucking means it.

I wonder how many people he's drowned.

mascara and ties (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

I was really sad to learn that the murderer story was a hoax--about a day after I first heard it (the story, not the song).

The great thing about Phil Collins is that these songs have aged really well precisely because he's a drummer and he had a great ear for good tones.
