Opal and Rainy Day.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

You've got all those discs, though, yes? (Cause I can burn you copies of the two Opal CDs.) "Rocket power, rocket power..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

martin phillipps was always threatening to remix brave words and then reissue it but if the new version of 'wet blanket' that he did is an indication of how he'd like the album to sound then it will likely turn out to be a disaster.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Return on the Giant Slits
Worth the $28, at least in my opinion. I like it more than Cut even though that has better highlights.

Pylon's Hits wasn't out of print when I bought it two years ago, I don't know about now, though. They're supposed to be a 2-CD reissue coming, though, according to the website.

I found that Y Pants comp new for $5 a few months back.

Ian Riese-Moraine has a grenade, that pineapple's not just a toy! (Eastern Mantr, Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's time for people to care about SLOVENLY, their catalog would serve up a righteous compilation at lesat, methinks.

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Associates on the way as mentioned elsewhere.

Feelies supposedly working with Bar/None on some reissues, perhaps box set? Maybe entire catalog w/ extras? (trypes...)

49 Americans stuff was on CD recently, no?

The Gist release on Ryko is out of print and hard to find.

Delta 5 Rough Trade stuff I think coming on KRS, but not the Pre stuff.

Fusetron repreassed the Y Pants CD not too long ago, or was planning on it. Probably will keep repressing it periodically so long as there is demand.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, slovenly -- but they'll have to pry it away from Ginn first.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jethro Tull - Bursting Out (live)

Davlo (Davlo), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Dance in the Fire Warren Zevon live

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Jethro Tull - Bursting Out (live)

Apparently John Bonham joked with Ian Anderson once at a party that said album should have been called Bore 'Em at the Forum.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Stand In The Fire is great. Wanted Dead Or Alive, which isn't so great is available, though. Go Figger!

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, all the 49 Americans stuff is on nice Japanese prints, in little mini LP sleves and all. But probably expensive in the States--expensive enough when I picked them up at Rough Trade a year ago.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever

i sold this for like $60 not long ago

there is some sort of orange juice reissue out soon on domino but i think it is the pre-album singles.
why don't they just reissue "the heather's on fire"? they would be fucking stupid to mess with that tracklist.

does this mean it's time to sell my copies of those two gatefold postcard lp reissues? i think those are really rare.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yargh.. i hate those mini LP sleeves. I like the idea of them, but i move so damn much they always get mucked up.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but the packaging is beautiful. apparently postcard issued about 2,000 of those and a few years later reissued "ostrich churchyard" and "heather's on fire" in regular jewel boxes without all the artwork and stuff... even that later reissue is really hard to find. i'm sure the ones i have are worth a lot--but i'm not certain because they never even show up on ebay. (i found them... i don't even remember how. i found all the OJ polydor reissues at newbury comics in boston around 2000-2001. evil clown in chicago also had them until a few years ago.)

The Gist release on Ryko is out of print and hard to find.

i think i still have my copy of this... i hope i do anyway. this was never given a proper release i don't think. i mean i think a few 1,000 copies--if that--were pressed and that was it. i've only ever seen it once in my life and i bought that copy.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i thought you were talking about the OJ reissues.

duh.

yeah, those mini-LP sleeve things are kind of silly. i like how economical they are, but they are a pain to use.

Spandau Ballet - Journeys to Glory

Isn't "The Good Earth" the Feelies record produced by Peter Buck? I bought it new at Virgin about 4 years ago.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realise that Gist and OJ were so rare. I bought a sealed copy of the Gist for a reasonable amount--don't remember now but I think it was around $20--via Gemm or eBay a couple years ago.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How is Time Fades Away? I just realized yesterday how much I love Neil Young. I didn't even know about that album until the stylus article today..

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

great, part of the "dark" trilogy along with On teh Beach and 2nites the nite.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Time Fades Away is wonderful. It's got Don't be Denied wich is great a couple of good piano songs and a couple of wild rockers like Last Dance and Yonder Stands the Siner (No clunkers as far as I remember). Also it's his Nashvile band I think along with Nash so the songs have a different swing, kind of honkey-tonk. The fanatics have a couple of online petitions they try and use to persuade Neil Young I guess (as he's the one that seems to hold that one up) to release it. I think they did the same for On the Beach, I don't know if they claimed credit for the rerelease.

dan. (dan.), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly they couldn't find an acceptable master tape for Time Fades Away during the last batch.

Keith C (kcraw916), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

W/r/t ESG: Soul Jazz collected most of their stuff except for about 1/3 of their second album and a couple b-sides. So, although I'm only basing this on the greatness of the 2/3 of it that I've heard:

ESG - ESG

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

According to the AMG, TFA was released on CD by Reprise SOMEWHERE in 1999. Right now there's a Russian CD reissue on Ebay. Maybe that's it.

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm ready for six hour plus box sets from slovenly and thinking fellers.

dan (dan), Monday, 25 April 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's time for people to care about SLOVENLY, their catalog would serve up a righteous compilation at lesat, methinks

Slovenly are one of my very favourite bands of all time, and I totally endorse this! Never found any of the New Alliance stuff here, so I could really use an extensive comp. And maybe some folk dont know some of their later stuff either? (I have Mike to thank for introducing me to them thru Chemical Imbalance all those years ago and I guess this is my one big chance to thank him for doing me that inestimable favour - sorry to embarrass you Mike, but thanks like about a million times!)

Oh also, what Clock DVA stuff is in print these days?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots and lots of great powerpop stuff from the 70s.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
Wounded Bird reissued the first Urban Verbs in 2003. I'm wondering if they'll do the same for Early Damage. They're so sporadic in their schedule. They also did Dictators and Dr. John. I don't think they ever remaster them though.

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Renascent (the label that brought you the Sound reissues) is re-releasing the Comsat Angels catalog early next year.

Weren't Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Heart, The Bells and Growing Up In Public reissued not too long ago? I can't find 'em anywhere. Street Hassle and New Sensations are also scarce.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Wall of Voodoo - Dark Continent (I'm not kidding, this is a great record, I've seen it go for >$100 on eBay)
Feist - Monarch (her 1st album)
Misfits - 12 Hits From Hell (whether it could have ever been considered "in print" is debatable, though)
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. (fuck what you heard, the original mix was the best and has never been rereleased)
Dog Faced Hermans - Hum of Life (their best, another damn shame)

A lot of 80s noise stuff...
First four Live Skull records
Skullflower's Form Destroyer
Cop Shoot Cop's Headkick Facsimilie (though that went OOP almost as soon as it was released)
Swans - First EP
Drunks With Guns - entire catalog

Although I wouldn't call them great records, Rob Zombie's done a great job of supressing the first two White Zombie albums.

After the Dylan doc aired, I discovered the entire John Jacob Niles is OOP.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages is out of print.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I'll add:

Lou Reed - Legendary Hearts
Lou Reed - New Sensations

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

"Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. (fuck what you heard, the original mix was the best and has never been rereleased)"

I'm very much afraid that there's something very seriously wrong with either your speakers or your ears.

It's a long story, but apparently there was some sort of fuck up by Track Records (who were probably somewhat distracted by the fact that they were rapidly going down the pan at the time) which resulted in the original vinyl release sounding horribly muffled; almost as if there was someone holding a pillow either over your ears or in front of your speakers.

I'm told this didn't affect the original cassette release - and I've even heard it suggested that the masters used for the vinyl were actually the wrong ones!

If the sound reproduction - not to mention the distribution - of the original album hadn't been so piss poor, then I strongly suspect that the story of Johnny Thunders; the Heartbreakers; and maybe even (who know?) the entire punk scene in both the UK and the USA; would have unfolded very differently.

That's not to say that the original L.A.M.F. couldn't be advantageously remastered, because I rather suspect it could; but in the meantime, L.A.M.F. The Lost '77 Mixes sounded like a complete revelation to my ears, after having lived with that original vinyl since it first came out.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Of Montreal - The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I know the whole story - and I still prefer the original L.A.M.F. mix. It's been unfairly maligned for years, and so many people have repeated the "sounds crap" line so many times it's become a bit of received wisdom for those who've never heard the original mix. I can understand why people prefer a "cleaner, crisper" sound, but it kinda defeats the purpose when you're talking about a scrappy punk record from '77. Ya know, there's a solution for something sounding a little muffled on your stereo, it's called the bass EQ.

I excitedly purchased The Lost '77 Mixes as well, listened to it a few times, and put it back on the shelf. While it's definitely preferable to the abortion that is LAMF Revisited, it's not a life-changing punk record for me. The original mix is dirty back alley rock n roll, and I wouldn't want it cleaned up anymore than I'd want Junkyard or Right Now! or Enter The 36 Chambers cleaned up.

The fact remains that L.A.M.F. is out of print, and it will probably never make the transition to CD because of its reputation as being the nadir of audio fidelity. Being a fan of punk + indie music, I've heard way worse recordings than the original L.A.M.F. (waaaayyy worse) and anybody scared off should really give it a listen before they judge. Maybe I'll YSI the thing...

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I think the problem with L.A.M.F. isn't / wasn't so much that it sounded crap (as you rightly say, there's certainly no shortage of substantially worse recordings around!) so much that it always sounded as if it really

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

(Don't you just hate it when that happens? That's twice I've done that today! Now, where was I? Oh yeah)

.... as if it really should - as if it really ought to - sound so much better.

I
To me it sounds / sounded as if someone had fucked up the bass EQ; or one of the speaker cones had blown; or someone had draped a duvet over one of the speakers; or you had an earful of wax - or maybe full of water from when I took that shower earlier....

Unfortunately no amount of dicking about (at least none that IIII ever achieved) with either the equipment or a cotton wool bud ever actually managed to put that right, and ultimately only added to the frustration.

Of course you're also absolutely right that people should make up their own minds if and when they get the opportunity rather than just believing what they read.

Always.

About everything.

I'll bet one whole shiny new penny that more than half of them will agree that L.A.M.F. sounds horribly and frustratingly muffled 'though.

Still, great cover pic http://blog.drecom.jp/avallo/img/14/Heartbreakers-LAMF-.jpg

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Out of interest Edward, have you ever heard the 12" of "Chinese Rocks"?

The same recording (and supposedly the same mix / master) as the album - but fuck does it sound better!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll agree that L.A.M.F. could be frustrating to a listener - that almost tangible rock nirvana dancing tantalizingly out of reach, obscured by buckets of mud. Just turn it up louder. When "Chinese Rocks" kicks in the guitars are so f'gn ugly; the climax of "Pirate Love" sounds like the band's playing a runaway train demolishing an apartment building. And the songs, the arrangements - just brilliant. The fact that the thing's lost to the sands of time just kills me...

Never heard the Chinese Rocks 12", but your tip has certainly put me on the hunt!

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of orginal mixes, how could I forget:

Raw Power by The Stooges

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 7 November 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

> I'm told this didn't affect the original cassette release...

I have the original UK cassette and it sounds fine to me. Haven't heard the vinyl so I've nothing to compare it to, but it doesn't exhibit any of the well-documented problems often attributed to the original LP.

I haven't played either of then for a while now, but IIRC Jungle's 'LAMF Revisited' doesn't sound *hugely* different to the Track cassette.

Niall, Monday, 7 November 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I only have the Lost 77 Mixes but that sounds fine to me. If you want to YSI the original that would be cool, if you want I can YSI the original Raw Power CD in return...

Did Drunks with Guns ever get reissued?
