Can anyone recommend 3-5 albums to check out this year? I have been totally disconnected from rap/hip hop and don't even know where to start.

Thanks Lex. Spottie, I liked some of the Future and Schoolboy Q records released earlier this year, but haven't really gone back to them more than once or twice. Last year I liked Kanye, Drake, A$AP, and Kevin Gates.
― Indexed, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 15:31 (eleven years ago)
yeah i'd have recommended schoolboy q and sage the gemini on a level below, they're worth hearing but i didn't go back to them too much after a couple of weeks
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)
Wara from the NBHD record is cool

― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)
The Step Brothers - Lord Steppington and Freddie Gibbs - Pinata albums are both way above average imo, the Schoolboy Q one isn't a great album but is essential for some of it's awesome singles.
― xelab, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)
the iamsu & sage albums are good companion pieces kinda like my krazy life & 10 summers

Gates record is dope. He hasn't let up imo
― deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 20:50 (eleven years ago)
gates' voice has the sort of character scarface's does, and that shit isn't earned easily. his storytelling style is also on point.

... I've published like 200 articles in the past year that don't mention chief keef. He works for the company that did the Chiraq doc.

Who has the best adlibs in the game right now? My vote goes to RHQ.
― longneck, Thursday, 16 October 2014 09:01 (eleven years ago)
who got the best ad libs, you or me? (ME!)
― some dude, Thursday, 16 October 2014 11:05 (eleven years ago)
Lol. Help me out, guys. Best female rap albums post 2005 sans Nicki?
― longneck, Thursday, 16 October 2014 13:13 (eleven years ago)
Mixtapes count as long as we're talking original material.
are you working on a complex listicle?
― ILOVEMASONNA (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 October 2014 13:14 (eleven years ago)
the arbitrary "since 2005" being the giveaway, of course
― ILOVEMASONNA (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 October 2014 13:15 (eleven years ago)
ha ha, no complex listicle, more like a poll elsewhere. the 2005 thing is more indicative of where it all starts to get fuzzy for me. We could say 2000 though, if that would help.

Thug's ad-libs are pretty great, and it's awesome when T.I. does his version of them in "About the Money"
― voodoo chili, Thursday, 16 October 2014 15:29 (eleven years ago)
waka flocka's adlibs will always have a special place in all our hearts, i think

*v few if any original beats but still such a necessary release
it was actually p sad thinking about how many female rappers made fire tracks in this period but never got an album out. seriously, not one of the jerk girls managed it? (apart from pink dollaz a few years post-jerk, and i wasn't bowled over by that.) (what happened to new era, she certainly had a mixtape's worth of incredible songs floating around.) (can someone give shawnna a chance ffs.) (gonna put my money on post-prison remy ma coming back strong.)
am sure i'm forgetting something obvious aargh

Lizzo (haven't heard her whole record but the singles are great and she kills live).
― festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 16 October 2014 18:16 (eleven years ago)
there's always remy ma...although the downside w/her is it means papoose is hiding somewhere around the corner, trying to hawk remixes of alphabetical slaughter and getting haircuts while keeping his fitted on
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 October 2014 19:41 (eleven years ago)
How well does her album hold up though? I haven't listened to it in ages.
― longneck, Thursday, 16 October 2014 20:04 (eleven years ago)
better than you'd think. the first real track on it, "she's gone," is incredible. "whuteva," "i'm", "thug love" and "crazy" are all solid. obviously "conceited" is still a jam.
