Anyway I've committed to memory that this thread's name starts with "Phrases" and it was created by upside-down Whiney so it should be smooth sailing from here on in.

Me too! In fact about a week or two ago I posted "Vic Tayback! Revenge!" on Mr. Fine Wine's FB page because I thought we had discussed this years ago on more than one occasion and that he did the same thing, but he claimed ignorance.

huh, i've been doing that more or less since i first heard the song as a kid. I wonder how many of us there are.

I've been doing it for a decade or two, which is maybe since when you were a kid.

Trying to remember who was with me and Mr. FW when we had this discussion so as to triangulate and corroborate.

Seems to me there was sometimes additional discussion about Vic Tayback's appearance on Star Trek TOS.

not quite the same but anytime somebody says "these are the only X I know of" I have to restrain myself from singing the tag to lehrer's "the elements" -- "these are the only ones of which the news has come to haaaarvard / and there may be any others but they haven't been discaaaavered."

I have kind of the reverse problem - phrases of certain lengths always get stuck in my head to certain tunes. e.g., anything with 7-8 syllables starts reverberating to the tune of "Camptown Races." So the other day I was in the store and, after passing through the dairy aisle, started singing, "Lowfat cultured buttermilk, doo dah, doo dah . . ."

Similarly, six-syllable phrases get the classic conga line rhythm, a la The Simpsons' "You don't win friends with salad, You don't win friends with salad!"

Not a phrase but an action - I sing "Cold As Ice" by Foreigner (specifically "You're digging for gold/Yet throwing away/A fortune in feelings/But someday you'll pay") whenever I clean the cat box so now that song reminds me of cat poop.

i've been speaking to a client called C4th1 St1rl1n9 lately and wondering why I get the Altered Images song 'Happy Birthday' stuck in my head.

Not quite the same thing, but while we're at it:

For years, quite puzzlingly, I found whenever I'd see the word 'bacon' written down, I'd hear it sung in the voice of Neil Tennant.

It just occurred to me that this is because my mind is conflating the word 'bacon' with 'taken', specifically in the way it gets sung on 'How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously'.

Now I'm thinking about copyrighting a vegetarian meat product.

Whenever I saw the poster for the Strangers on a Train play that was on a while back I always sung it in my head to the tune of either 'Strangers in the Night' or 'Riders on the Storm', depending on the mood I was in.
