I'll simply say that Cap.IV is one of those rare pieces of music where, whenever it plays, I just have to stop whatever I'm doing and *listen*

Tbh this may be why I haven't spent much time with it and didn't consider it for my ballot. Enjoying it seems like an investment. And I'm pretty lazy, even in my music listening habits apparently.

crazy how much i've listened to autechre and i had no clue what would be in the top 5. cichli would have been my vote as well.

but yeah have gotten a ton out of this poll, better part of 20 years with autechre and i feel like i'm listening with new ears, thanks all.

Listening to Cichli right now & it's cool, has a lovely logic to it. Extra measure in the beat gives it an almost proggish jaunt

Eutow is an astonishing piece of modern classical composition that IMO deserves & perhaps even needs to be 2 or 3 times longer. I wouldn't suggest it needs to even develop much, just inhabit its soundworld more emphatically. Its outro has the feel of a mid-track transition. Compare to something like Drane, which keeps coming and coming until you're emotionally & intellectually wracked

N.B. I much prefer Cipater to Cichli but then Cichli is the more uncomplicated, more conventionally ornate 'banger' I guess haha, it's still gr8 don't get me wrong

clipper is other ppl's autechre business but that's ok. (actually, it gets incredibly deep around 6 minutes in - i can see why it's so beloved now, even if it's practically an orbital song ;))

some real finds itt, esp from lp5, ep7 & the peel sessions, with a smattering from earlier still. again, ty everyone

Damn, even the tracks I thought I knew well I have to hear again to properly recall and grasp. Cichli was my #4 and right now I can't recall it at all. Not surprised it won but the poll threw up enough other surprises and had a good spread across their catalogue - the feared incunabula clean sweep never happened, I thought basscadet was a cert.

"Basscat" sounds *really* dated, as do a number of others from LP1. "444" is 4ever though (see what I did there).

yeah im not too fond of the modern classical appelation here, perhaps phobically because i associate that term with nico muhly rather than tristan murail now
just play it really loud, it contains multitudes, the low end is nothing other than sick

if I were to redo this ballot it wd probably lose the last 4 or 5 tbh and have maphive 6.1, drane and some others on it. but that's polls

Pen Expers, Parhelic, VI Scose Poise, and Surripere were all late cuts for me. I just like my Autechre smooth and pretty.

Also briefly considered something off of Quadrangle! Which is like uncharted territory for me.

this was in some measure enlightening and engaging, it served as a corrective to the endless classic rock deathcult (even while it introduces autechre into the sepulchre)

they have made some of the very greatest vernacular music of the last few decades, if that seems like more of a challop than it should then it's because of the canonical biases (explicit or tacit) that favour lyricism, relatability, songform etc

they deserve also to be considered alongside almost anyone who has made what in its quaint senescence is called avantgarde or worse new music

their success is dialectical fracture and recombination of those values via their relentless focus on the granularity of sound, their tendency towards extremity, counterintuition, the sublime

these are scarcely terms one should bother applying to very much music but they are their own justification, this is music worthy of situating alongside xenakis and varese, hendrix or neu!

like those it speaks in the most direct terms and it does not require any sort of prior contextualization, the worst thing someone coming to their music anew could do is to read too much about them

(even while it introduces autechre into the sepulchre)

otherwise, i can't find anything to disagree with there. interesting how the radiohead poll left me liking radiohead a little less. but autechre? much more.
