Haha "if you love interludes you'll love this album" is hard to argue with though

Evan R, Friday, 3 October 2014 22:41 (eleven years ago)

KISS THE OLD ME GOODBYE SHE'S DEAD AND GONE
DEAD AND GONE

uberweiss, Monday, 13 October 2014 04:08 (eleven years ago)

i never heard any of the mixtapes that were supposedly so different from "2 On" and probably further from my tastes, so i really didn't know what to expect from this album, but i'm very impressed, it holds together really well.

Tinashe had a recurrent role on 2 And A Half Men, who knew

jake and celeste were also the names of lily kane's parents in VERONICA MARS

j. winters (josh), Monday, 13 October 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

hey the bonus tracks/offcuts are good too

album is very soothing to listen to on a cold winter's night, i'm increasingly enamoured of it tbh

what really, really differentiates itself not just from a lot of albums of this ilk but a lot of albums in general is that the songs never blur into each other - each one is distinct, has its own memorable character. subtly different production details, unusually strong hooks, good sequencing probably all play a part in that.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 10:00 (eleven years ago)

wish "indigo child" was longer than an interlude, beat is sick

ayo is that a kalenna songwriting credit i see on "thug cry"!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 15:43 (eleven years ago)

That makes a bit of sense actually, Thug Cry was the one that really stood out on first listen. Second half in general is a bit stronger than the first I think, once it gets out of its whole hippy ambient thing, the exception being that one track near the end that sounds like The Scientist by Coldplay.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 15:48 (eleven years ago)

lyrics don't get more kalenna than those

r|t|c, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:18 (eleven years ago)

How Many Times is amazing.

out here like a flopson (tpp), Sunday, 19 October 2014 19:14 (eleven years ago)

This is a good album, although something is missing to make me think it's a great one. "All hands on deck" and "watch me work" are jams

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 19 October 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

her feature on the Calvin Harris album is pretty dope

two weeks pass...

This record sounds really great after spending a few weeks away from it

Evan R, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:47 (eleven years ago)

I made a mistake of playing Aiko's album before this one on Sunday; the two bled into each other, all cool yearning.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:49 (eleven years ago)

Tinashe's vocal style is so much more appealing to me than Aiko's

nakhchi little van (some dude), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 22:16 (eleven years ago)

yeah great album

ANU (sisilafami), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 22:22 (eleven years ago)

this is a great great great album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 November 2014 22:53 (eleven years ago)

lot of great vocal moments on this, both large and small

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 November 2014 22:53 (eleven years ago)

great great great album seconded. start to finish, really. tons of great production details too. "far side of the moon" is astonishing.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 23:34 (eleven years ago)

def top 5 of the year for me.

yeah the songs that sound like the moody/atmospheric ones at first -- cold sweat, far side of the moon, bated breath -- really start to stand out the more you listen

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 19 November 2014 00:54 (eleven years ago)

pleasantly surprised you guys dig it so much

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 02:29 (eleven years ago)

best pop album of the year I think unless Sucker ends up being fantastic

give kawhi his damn eyedrops (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 03:43 (eleven years ago)

yeah this and 1989 for me

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 19 November 2014 05:13 (eleven years ago)

Her lower register is so much stronger and with so much more personality than the Ciara-esque breathy upper register she spends most of this album in, and I don't really understand why she does so.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 08:47 (eleven years ago)

Far Side Of The Moon is some crazy-amazing shit.

Sometimes I'm like "what is truth if truth is subjective? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

Tim F, Monday, 1 December 2014 08:15 (eleven years ago)

this is a very good version of an unexciting direction to me, like the kehlani tape is making far more interesting choices but nothing is really quite as perfectly executed as this is

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 1 December 2014 13:22 (eleven years ago)

I will take "perfectly executed"...Was happily enjoying this last night

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 December 2014 14:05 (eleven years ago)

lol it's a sign of how much I love this album that this line now makes me smile rather than rmde. current favorite moment is how she pronounces "funny" on All Hands.

rob, Saturday, 31 January 2015 21:44 (eleven years ago)

to be clear, I feel likwise.

Or perhaps I'm smiling with RMDs in my eyes.

Tim F, Saturday, 31 January 2015 21:52 (eleven years ago)

for some reason i always get snagged on that question every time i've done LSD, wish i would just read some philosophy and figure it out

flopson, Saturday, 31 January 2015 21:55 (eleven years ago)

fyi reading philosophy doesn't really help ime

tinashe is right to insert a mental shrug at the end of her question

Tim F, Saturday, 31 January 2015 22:04 (eleven years ago)

thanks to the album poll, I gave this album another shot. I love it. * plays "Thug Cry" for sixth time *

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 January 2015 22:05 (eleven years ago)

ah, I thought your post might have been rooted in affection, Tim, but wasn't sure. imo the tripping in the dorm room loopiness of that line turns from lead to gold once you grasp that the truth/subjectivity of the scenario in Pretend is a lot more earthbound than your average philosophical dilemma

rob, Saturday, 31 January 2015 22:08 (eleven years ago)

more philosophy from R&B singers imo

Tim F, Saturday, 31 January 2015 22:09 (eleven years ago)

This album is fine, and I'm glad that she's gotten so much love around here, but I still like the mixtapes better.

That shit right there is precedented. (cryptosicko), Saturday, 31 January 2015 22:31 (eleven years ago)

I'm diving into this deep. I think "How Many Times" is my fav atm. Are her mixtapes seriously this good too???

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 13:08 (eleven years ago)

i thought this was a gigantic step up from her mixtapes, which never hooked me in much

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 13:21 (eleven years ago)

Are her mixtapes seriously this good too???

no

real hip hop for j dilla fans (o_sailor), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 13:26 (eleven years ago)

yeah her mixtapes weren't *but* this track she did with ryan hemsworth is as good as any song on aquarius imo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM_L8ZVoWA8

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 February 2015 14:57 (eleven years ago)

The album was a big step up but the mixtapes are still solid rnb albums. Her first one is the best.. I think. I got them all at the same time so it's sorta all a big mass of music.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:30 (eleven years ago)

she's releasing "all hands on deck" as the next single! yay!

...iggy azalea's doing a rap feat on it (burn everything)
