eheh, thanks. that sounds like a plan !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 16:10 (eleven years ago)

i wouldn't expect it to sound like Kaputt though

nostormo, Thursday, 2 October 2014 22:29 (eleven years ago)

I'd be very happy with more ambient disco explorations and spoken word ruminations.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 3 October 2014 07:16 (eleven years ago)

five Spanish songs was pretty great

huh a new version of Archer on the Beach is going to be on this

ufo, Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:25 (eleven years ago)

I enjoyed this

silverfish, Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:46 (eleven years ago)

Is the beginning of this "Jungleland" or what?

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:50 (eleven years ago)

like this song a lot
kind of OD'd on kaputt, but feel like i could go back to it now...

tylerw, Thursday, 21 May 2015 17:05 (eleven years ago)

I love this song.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 May 2015 17:43 (eleven years ago)

aw shit, here comes the sun.

ink on all the streetlights (cajunsunday), Thursday, 21 May 2015 20:07 (eleven years ago)

Love it. Also, the first verse is parodying Springsteen lyrics, right?

'Dream lover, I know
Someone's idea of fun
You and me, thoughts on city
Lovers on the run'

You and me, thoughts on city... That's pretty much every Springsteen/Hold Steady lyric ever.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 May 2015 22:50 (eleven years ago)

not a Mariah Carey cover :(

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 May 2015 23:00 (eleven years ago)

I'd like to hear him hit Mariah's high note in that one!

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 21 May 2015 23:23 (eleven years ago)

The bassline from Cemetery Gates is in there somewhere, right?

Frederik B, Friday, 22 May 2015 00:13 (eleven years ago)

kinda disappointing that he's lost interest in the 'pop' of kaputt

ufo, Monday, 25 May 2015 06:24 (eleven years ago)

I'm the opposite, all the dour-and-not-pop stuff in this interview is making me quite optimistic about this new record (I didn't care for Kaputt)

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Monday, 25 May 2015 13:08 (eleven years ago)

I loved Kaputt, by far the best he's done imo, but it was great in a way that could be done with a lot of different sounds. I love Dream Lover as well, so I have hope.

Frederik B, Monday, 25 May 2015 13:12 (eleven years ago)

I love Kaputt and don't expect him to repeat it (or me to care about the band again).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 May 2015 13:35 (eleven years ago)

Alfred, did you hear Five Spanish Songs? not sure how it would play to someone who actually understands the lyrics, but I found it an interesting companion piece to Kaputt sonically

Heroic melancholy continues to have a forceful grip on (bernard snowy), Monday, 25 May 2015 14:05 (eleven years ago)

Kaputt is easily my favourite, and Dream Lover keeps the feel of the band from Kaputt despite kinda returning to his usual 70's-ish style so I'm quite hopeful. The press release mentions Prefab Sprout etc. which I know were a big influence on Kaputt so if that's still evident it'll be nice.

ufo, Monday, 25 May 2015 14:17 (eleven years ago)

bernard: I have. It's pretty!

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 May 2015 14:31 (eleven years ago)

What originally got me hooked on Destroyer was how spot on the Ziggy Stardust sound was on Streethawk, so I'm pretty thrilled this record goes for "70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock".

@frederik
You and me, thoughts on city
Lovers on the run

is hilarious as Springsteen parody

niels, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 11:49 (eleven years ago)

I would watch a true detective with Dan bejar saying shit like "beware the company you reside in" over and over while Blake Shelton is like wtf man

Heez, Sunday, 31 May 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

"We've been told you still fly into rages at the mention of Christine White's name. You want to tell us what that's about?"

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 1 June 2015 15:41 (eleven years ago)

Re that Pitchfork interview, kinda wish he was as tough on Jessica Pratt whom he praises, as he is on Taylor Swift. But he is who he is.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 June 2015 16:08 (eleven years ago)

oh god that interview. love it/hate it/love it.

"PF: There are a few songs on Poison Season that are among the poppiest Destroyer songs you’ve ever made."

DB: Yeah, I know. I apologize for those songs; those songs are aberrations."

jamiesummerz, Monday, 1 June 2015 16:56 (eleven years ago)

Pitchfork interview is cool, he comes off as a real character!

Over the last 11 years or so, I’ve mostly just listened to Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan.

Hehe...

in the kaputt vs. let england shake thread there's a lot of great posts about how this record def contains sophistopop references but also takes them a step further, sounding like an idiosyncratic contemporary of these records that was never made at the time

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 21:47 (ten years ago)

actually possibly no posts in that thread said that and i'm paraphrasing them incorrectly but: there are a lot of great posts in that thread

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)

that was a good thread.

some fun trolling and beef too e.g. flopson and aero

Tim F, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 02:33 (ten years ago)

I'm sure I wrote in this thread that Kaputt evokes sophisti-pop, but I was wrong: it's a histrionic Robert Wyatt album.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 02:50 (ten years ago)

Isn't Comicopera already a histrionic Robert Wyatt album?

Tim F, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 02:53 (ten years ago)

compared to Kaputt it's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 02:56 (ten years ago)

weird, I just decided to explore sophisti-pop today and the list of ten essential albums I found had "Kaputt" on it (as well as "Avalon" and "Steve McQueen")

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 04:06 (ten years ago)

It's not as ostentatious about it as some of the above examples but I think Rickie Lee Jones' The Magazine arguably belongs here as well.

Tim F, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 04:08 (ten years ago)

what does histrionic mean? dramatic? kaputt's pretty low key though? robert wyatt - hmm feel like Croz' remark on VU: too dramatic

anyway, sophistipop and yacht rock suggestions welcome, blue nile and late Cohen nice too

niels, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 10:43 (ten years ago)

Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night

Neil S, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 10:44 (ten years ago)

Good one. Will have to check out the Prefab Sprout too, have come across that recommendation before.

There's something luxurious, melancholic, inoffensively beautiful about Kaputt that I guess makes everybody I know love it.
