It's nearly 90 minutes and it's consistently good. Thug's verses are really sharp and focused, especially compared to some of the leftovers that have surfaced this year. Quan hasn't wowed me on the first couple of listens, but he brings a lot of heart. It's just a really balanced tape.

Quan steals "freestyle"

So we were at the club until 1:35 a.m. when the lights came up and the DJ announced Young Thug wasn't showing. Said Thug decided to go St. Louis and it was his fault and the promoter's fault but not the club's fault, so we didn't get a refund on our $40 cover. I had a ton of fun so I can't complain too much, but that's a lot of time and money to spend on a Monday night not to see Young Thug.

Evan R, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 07:14 (nine years ago) link

when you mentioned that show earlier today, i went looking to try to figure out where he was at. saw the ad on his twitter. i don't know anything about that club or Milwaukee on a Monday night but that thing looked like a no-show waiting to happen.

alpine static, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 07:29 (nine years ago) link

this tape YT is slightly more consistent and engaging that his usual tape standard. Sounds like he's waking up from a long coma on Bullets hook though. Quan's drowsy keyless crooning gets bit tiresome. All the beats on here sound the same.

Non throwaways:

See You
Flava
730
Tell Em (Lies)
Pull Up

Raccoon Tanuki, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 12:05 (nine years ago) link

that sucks abt the show. yeah same type of sitch when hes supposed to be in Connecticut..may go see lil durk instead which is at least at a legitimate venue

this tape sounds great btw

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 12:59 (nine years ago) link

I'd seen Gucci Mane and Young Scooter shows there without a problem, and there were plugs for the show on Young Thug's various social media feeds, so even at 1 a.m. it didn't dawn on me he wasn't gonna show. What's crazy is how little the audience cared. Nobody booed or was all that pissed (even with the DJ bad mouthing Thug). Everybody contently filed out without making a stink about it.

Travis Scott Stan didn't even mention the best record

one of the supposed tourdates is at the arena in baltimore, which seems unlikely but then boosie played there over the summer

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 4 October 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

yeah will prob try to see/write about the show. it's pretty late in the tour though, by that point it should prolly be apparent whether it's a must-see show or not.

This really is the 2014 tentpole release he needed. It slots right along with ICFN2 and 1017 Thug as one of those important career marker tapes

Black portland somehow becoming the signature thug album is so weird

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 10 October 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

is that true in an other than chrisbro sense

lag∞n, Friday, 10 October 2014 16:12 (nine years ago) link

yeah even when it was his most widely reviewed project at the time there was a whole tone of "we're talking about this because it's the first thing he dropped since Stoner/Danny Glover, it's not a major or representative release." i can't tell if Christgau never caught that vibe or is just rebelling against it.

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Friday, 10 October 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

he's mentioned it several times all year, so for him it was likely "first release I loved is the first one I love"

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 October 2014 16:31 (nine years ago) link

album of the year, he said in an interview or someplace

people who continue to hold up "Picachu" as a key Young Thug song for years to come are gonna be like people who are way too into Lil Wayne's "I Feel Like Dying"

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Friday, 10 October 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

that's a good comparison

it's an astounding song but he has a half dozen as good/better

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 October 2014 17:05 (nine years ago) link

yeah both great songs that are kinda left field/not core

lag∞n, Friday, 10 October 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

tho tbh im not that into picachu

in the real world, no; for critics, yes

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 10 October 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

i always thought picachu was annoying and i think people are into it for its "weirdness" like he's just shouting random words or whatever
which, tbf, he is, but the weirdness unto itself appreciation of young thug is kind of annoying imo

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 10 October 2014 19:21 (nine years ago) link

it's one of his best & most coherent hooks, lyrically

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 October 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

i just mean 'my diamonds they say picachu' isn't the most clever hook, people just like the random reference

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 10 October 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

a song called “Molly Workin’” has to hook harder than this one to make me forget that molly generates more fellatio providers than normally occur in nature.

this fuckin guy

well that part is sort of a non sequitur but everything that comes after that is just a pretty digestible modern rap hook constructed & delivered in a way that is very singular

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 October 2014 20:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah but if he hadn't used the word picachu no one would single it out
