Imagine being excited by a Nicki Minaj album considering her track record/the singles

i wish Kanye and Common had a better signature collaboration to do whenever they're at the same concert than "Get Em High." they coulda reenacted the Chappelle's Show "The Food" performance with Dave maybe.

Any surprise surprise appearances of this stature are welcomed and thus exciting.

common opened w/ "the food" at that show cuz chappelle introduced him but kanye didn't come out until later

two years later and i still enjoy this album a lot, first four tracks especially still surprise and overwhelm, the charlie wilson vocal in "bound 2" still resonates

the dancehall elements are some of the best parts imo, if this album did anything for me it made me want to listen to capleton and beenie man more

very weird to read the first reactions in this thread esp to "new slaves" and see people think kanye wasn't parodying white voices in the "what you want, a bentley? fur coat? a diamond chain? all you blacks want all the same things" line, i don't know how you could hear that any other way?

same. there are things on this album that don't work but absolutely nothing that's unintentional and, of the elements considered controversial, almost nothing that's included solely to shock or lacks a pointed significance, w/ the possible exception of "i'm in it"

glad that this one's so good because i've long since accepted that whenever swish/so help me god/whatever the fuck he's calling it this week comes out, it won't be good at all

idk Blood on the Leaves with the juxtaposition of the original song with lines about an ex and alimony is probably the most grating, and if there is a "pointed significance" to that, let me know

album has lost its 'WTF is this' shock factor since it came out, but its still good, its just marred by a lot of the lyrics, that havent aged too well (already), and the fact that it doesnt seem to hang too well together overall. but its bound to be better than the new one.

Blood on the Leaves is about drug paranoia to me. I don't know if it was intended as such, but it works that way to me.

I nearly had a heart attack the first time I heard this record. Love it to pieces; those first 4 tracks rock hard — my first time listening to the opener when I suddenly heard where the 1 was and how the verse was leaning into the groove was magical.

To me BotL seems to be about the toll of meaningless sex; subversively using "black bodies" and "strange fruit" to mean naked people getting it on. I could be projecting.

The outro to “I am a God,” when he follows up a bunch of blasphemous boasts — “i know he’s the most high, but i am a close high” — with panicked panting and screaming. Suchg a strange record.

If you wanted to be turned off by Kanye West there was ample material on Yeezus, but it also had an undeniable, transferable energy, a crackling and palpable electricity.

Agreed, that line stood out to me in Jordan's review.

I was listening to an interview with a drummer who does sample replays for a living, and learned that the gospel sample on 'On Sight' was actually an entire replay. Days before the album dropped, they had to hire another producer/engineer to get a drummer and a gospel choir to precisely re-record the sample (which presumably couldn't be cleared). Crazy.
