i stand by not being excited by jay electronica and while i have little against him, there are a hundred people in hip-hop i'd be more excited by than common

Imagine being excited by a Nicki Minaj album considering her track record/the singles

nova, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 03:18 (eleven years ago)

i wish Kanye and Common had a better signature collaboration to do whenever they're at the same concert than "Get Em High." they coulda reenacted the Chappelle's Show "The Food" performance with Dave maybe.

some dude, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 03:23 (eleven years ago)

Any surprise surprise appearances of this stature are welcomed and thus exciting.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 03:35 (eleven years ago)

common opened w/ "the food" at that show cuz chappelle introduced him but kanye didn't come out until later

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 13:43 (eleven years ago)

ten months pass...

two years later and i still enjoy this album a lot, first four tracks especially still surprise and overwhelm, the charlie wilson vocal in "bound 2" still resonates

the dancehall elements are some of the best parts imo, if this album did anything for me it made me want to listen to capleton and beenie man more

very weird to read the first reactions in this thread esp to "new slaves" and see people think kanye wasn't parodying white voices in the "what you want, a bentley? fur coat? a diamond chain? all you blacks want all the same things" line, i don't know how you could hear that any other way?

marcos, Friday, 14 August 2015 15:13 (ten years ago)

I haven't felt compelled to re listen to this album even once after the hype boiled off

nbd i listened to it like 6,000,000,000,000 times for you, it still rules tbrr

i don't know how you could hear that any other way?

same. there are things on this album that don't work but absolutely nothing that's unintentional and, of the elements considered controversial, almost nothing that's included solely to shock or lacks a pointed significance, w/ the possible exception of "i'm in it"

slothroprhymes, Friday, 14 August 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

glad that this one's so good because i've long since accepted that whenever swish/so help me god/whatever the fuck he's calling it this week comes out, it won't be good at all

slothroprhymes, Friday, 14 August 2015 17:23 (ten years ago)

yeah I'm still listening to this all time, usually just through the first four but still

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 14 August 2015 17:55 (ten years ago)

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 August 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)

googling that, bc i forgot what it was about, informed me that g-m-rg-t- has its own wiki and now i feel ill

slothroprhymes, Friday, 14 August 2015 20:16 (ten years ago)

genuinely sorry about that

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 August 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

idk Blood on the Leaves with the juxtaposition of the original song with lines about an ex and alimony is probably the most grating, and if there is a "pointed significance" to that, let me know

sarahell, Saturday, 15 August 2015 02:49 (ten years ago)

yeah that song is still garbage

some dude, Saturday, 15 August 2015 02:58 (ten years ago)

enough strong elements are immediately there in "blood" for it to be pretty powerful despite the wack lyrics but yea it was a missed opportunity for something that could've been way better

marcos, Saturday, 15 August 2015 03:29 (ten years ago)

agreed, it's flawed for sure but has plenty of power.

slothroprhymes, Saturday, 15 August 2015 04:39 (ten years ago)

so did hitler

sarahell, Saturday, 15 August 2015 20:57 (ten years ago)

aw c'mon man

marcos, Saturday, 15 August 2015 21:02 (ten years ago)

no no hold on now, now what you don't understand sway, is that the Nazi industry has historically been almost impossible to break into as a black American, nevermind a black American Kardashian, do you see I'm saying, hanh?

i agree w/this, musically it's super epic but the lyrics make me feel a little dumb for getting swept up in it.

still listening to Yeezus frequently btw.

lil urbane (Jordan), Saturday, 15 August 2015 21:41 (ten years ago)

My bold opinion is that Late Registration aged better already.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 21 August 2015 04:38 (ten years ago)

still haven't been able to get through this album a second time.

Spottie, Friday, 21 August 2015 06:25 (ten years ago)

album has lost its 'WTF is this' shock factor since it came out, but its still good, its just marred by a lot of the lyrics, that havent aged too well (already), and the fact that it doesnt seem to hang too well together overall. but its bound to be better than the new one.

StillAdvance, Friday, 21 August 2015 16:18 (ten years ago)

Blood on the Leaves is about drug paranoia to me. I don't know if it was intended as such, but it works that way to me.

Frederik B, Friday, 21 August 2015 16:37 (ten years ago)

I nearly had a heart attack the first time I heard this record. Love it to pieces; those first 4 tracks rock hard — my first time listening to the opener when I suddenly heard where the 1 was and how the verse was leaning into the groove was magical.

To me BotL seems to be about the toll of meaningless sex; subversively using "black bodies" and "strange fruit" to mean naked people getting it on. I could be projecting.

I dunno, his new one's pretty good:

dont know who produced it but jeezy's god sounds kinda yeezus-influenced.

is blood on the leaves the one where he compares fisting someone to the black power salute

The outro to “I am a God,” when he follows up a bunch of blasphemous boasts — “i know he’s the most high, but i am a close high” — with panicked panting and screaming. Suchg a strange record.

If you wanted to be turned off by Kanye West there was ample material on Yeezus, but it also had an undeniable, transferable energy, a crackling and palpable electricity.

just put this on for the first time in ages and yeah this is such a succinct description of why it's great

devvvine, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 00:06 (eight years ago)

Agreed, that line stood out to me in Jordan's review.

three years pass...

I was listening to an interview with a drummer who does sample replays for a living, and learned that the gospel sample on 'On Sight' was actually an entire replay. Days before the album dropped, they had to hire another producer/engineer to get a drummer and a gospel choir to precisely re-record the sample (which presumably couldn't be cleared). Crazy.

I.e. it's not actually this record --
