The only album I have heard from them/him? is Cupid Deluxe and I love it, in the same vein as Solange and that Drake song that sounds like a song. Is the new or the previous album good?

Moka, Saturday, 13 September 2014 03:23 (eleven years ago)

Just investigated and you all already knew this but Blood Orange produced Solange's Losing You which also sounds like the inspiration to Hold On We're Going Home so it seems like he is the reason I like those two.

Moka, Saturday, 13 September 2014 03:39 (eleven years ago)

i used to be all "he is surely the reason i like both 'losing you' and 'everything is embarrassing'" but his own records are not v compelling at all, he is not a very convincing performer despite the super obvious influences he wears on his sleeve

like srsly imagine how bad "everything is embarrasing" could easily have been had he recorded it himself: https://soundcloud.com/user43036935/dev-hynes-everything-is-embarrassing-demo

Leaked demo of a track apparently sent to Britney for "Britney Jean". Kinda chillwavey. I like it. https://soundcloud.com/user43036935/dev-hynes-britney-demo-1-no

two weeks pass...

does this guy have the narrowest range of any really good songwriter/producer of recent years?

nearly all the tracks i've heard from him--his "own" stuff and the stuff he produces for other singers--is working a very similar instrumental palette, songwriting style, mood.... it's a nice mood, to be sure.

wizzz! (amateurist), Monday, 16 November 2015 19:36 (ten years ago)

i went a listened to all his production/songwriting credits from other artists a while ago (as listed on wikipedia dot org https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dev_Hynes_discography) and some of them are more "blood orange" than others the ones that are both good and have that sound are imo

its p cool to have someone writing and producing with such a left field vibe

about to listen to a review copy of the new album, was like "hey wonder what ilx thinks about this dude" and hoooooooooooooly bejesus lol, did not know hynes was a cause of such contention.

i can /sorta/ see why people think it's the dreaded hipsterrnb but more than anything else the motivation behind that line of thinking m/l boils down to "urban outfitters locations have played his songs before." anyway, carly rae jepsen is featured on a track! excited to check this out.

stoked 4 this

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 June 2016 19:20 (nine years ago)

it's good. somewhat uneven, and so anyone who's annoyed by the pastiche aspect of his arrangements will find that aesthetic in full flight here. but a lot of fun imo. "sandra's smile" isn't on it, which is odd considering how prominent sociopolitical concerns are throughout the record

cupid deluxe is a really good record

J0rdan S., Saturday, 25 June 2016 20:41 (nine years ago)

cupid deluxe is pretty good but the way he always uses completely static drum loops is frustrating

i fn love cupid deluxe

NY Times writer Jon Caramanica hangs out with Hynes at various NY locations--studios, parks, the ballet, uptown, east village,

i tried to read that but it was too much "new york is a mysterious mistress"

lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 17:08 (nine years ago)

damn... That caramanica profile a brutal hit by the cringe-mafia

imo to like this guy's music is to have a crush on him but reading someone so in thrall to a flâneur-type is weird cuz they paint the most banal activities as some rarefied shit, like 'he sits in parks... plays sports... walks the streets... pays for tickets to the ballet... and he has Unlocked The Secret To The City Of New York"

also lol at this

That sort of engagement feels almost antiquated, a product of an older time when place was something close to destiny. That’s no longer the case. It is less essential than ever, in this time of easy mobility of ideas and internet-driven transnational fame, for an artist to identify with one spot in the world. To be, in essence, local.

being immediately followed by 'oh and his snapchat is the bomb'

Jesus, that Caramanica piece. That's what a Harvard education will buy you, I guess. "When friends like Florence Welch have concerts, he goes." Really living the NYC life to the max there.

Man this album is so fine. 'But You' has the most lush chorus Garth Greenside hasn't written in years.

curmudgeon, Friday, 1 July 2016 13:47 (nine years ago)

i dont' like this nearly as much as the last one, on first listen, but it might be a grower. I also haven't listened to it intently, just put it on in the house

akm, Friday, 1 July 2016 18:12 (nine years ago)

Don't really get the hype around this one

yesca, Friday, 1 July 2016 18:17 (nine years ago)

tricked into listening to some mediocre wispy pop thanks to a Carly Rae Jepsen feature, gutted

boxedjoy, Saturday, 2 July 2016 08:56 (nine years ago)

I can't get into this yet. On "Augustine" he sounds even duller than Solange.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 July 2016 14:25 (nine years ago)

i love the single. chorus is very tame impala. though the whole thing could have been released in 1986 apart from the 90s R&B breaks.
