Dear Hip Hop, we can’t scream “murder, misogyny, lawlessness” in our music & then turn around and ask for equality & justice.
— Lecrae (@lecrae) August 19, 2014

yes you exactly can

yeah, i'm saying that's hardly the most damning thing i've ever read from a rap artist's twitter feed.

lito seems like he's kinda backed off this year after relentlessly releasing over the last couple

FKATlovestoFU better (Spottie), Thursday, 11 September 2014 05:01 (eleven years ago)

It's all bout the Mike Will (well "4 Zones" mainly) and Black Metaphor tracks for me

Black Metaphor is the Southern Bink, fucking surprised at how dope his stuff on there is

nova, Thursday, 11 September 2014 05:27 (eleven years ago)

prefer the Childish Major tracks myself. Not really in love with 4 Zones, intro is cool but the auto tune is pretty weak and it plods for the last few minutes

been checking out a bunch of youtube links from that yae yae jordan...it's got a certain kinda old school like cassette tape regional 1991 gangsta midwest rap vibe to me which is kinda cool, like it doesn't even sound like it but i get like dayton family, awesome dre, mc breed type vibes from it

i found this going down the linkhole

not sure it's related but a lot of these guys like the doughboy first name

from what i gather the sound originates w/ this older group Street Lordz and esp Blade Icewood who went on to become a solo artist before being killed in 2005

Street Lordz first tape in '98 had too short, spice 1, and daz on it.

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 12 September 2014 23:25 (eleven years ago)

also the remix to Yae Yae Jordan's "Strapped" has that ~lyrical~ chief keef verse

the Childish Major tracks are really generic chintzy Southern rap IMO, dude sounds way better over soul shit or really towering massive beats which I think "4 Zones" is. "Addicted" is nice tho although YG's verse is super-lol

On a not-really-related note I forgot how much awesome party music the Ying Yang Twins/Mr. Collipark put out back in the day, co-workers put me back up on that. College freshman-year flashbacks maan

'Try me' is a real earworm

out here like a flopson (tpp), Saturday, 13 September 2014 17:41 (eleven years ago)

all the viral-ish rap songs coming up right now (Try Me, U Guessed It, Look At Wrist) sound like death warmed over imo

some dude, Saturday, 13 September 2014 17:54 (eleven years ago)

flicka dat wrist is pretty good though

longneck, Saturday, 13 September 2014 18:29 (eleven years ago)

i like 'try me' and not as much the other ones (altho "fuck em x3" is kinda fun in a sergdun-core way) but i def know where you're coming from on this ... v detached or something

i do think 'try me' is interesting though ... it's like reading a twitter feed during ferguson where its like "heartfelt anger" -> "pop culture joke" -> "general fuckery" -> "anguish" -> all in the same flat 140 character tone ... idk it's like an emotional rollercoaster while your eyes are glazed over looking at your phone but set to music

hemiola rap is real lol

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 14 September 2014 05:32 (eleven years ago)

your last two 'hemiola' links seriously making me break out in hives with all that offbeat rapping

some dude, Sunday, 14 September 2014 11:22 (eleven years ago)

I still love how the original hemiola argument happened like right before Migos, whose whole style is actual hemiola, broke out

The Reverend, Sunday, 14 September 2014 17:01 (eleven years ago)

lol true

some dude, Sunday, 14 September 2014 17:04 (eleven years ago)

That's not Hemiola it's just triplets

Hemiola is like how jaz o ends his verse on "n---- what"

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:22 (eleven years ago)

"Offbeat" in the pocket rapping is a thing now ... I think when yae yae Jordan does it it's effective, Pablo skywalkin feels like he's still locating his sound

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:32 (eleven years ago)

those are triplets too. jaz is just saying a syllable on every third beat where a migos flow would have a syllable on all three beats with an accent on one of them. xp

some dude, Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:32 (eleven years ago)

you can't be in the pocket and out of the pocket at the same time, it's one or the other. like people make fun of Big Sean on "All Me" but his timing is totally on point, i don't know what those guys are doing though.

some dude, Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)

And one is a Hemiola and one is not

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:39 (eleven years ago)

The pocket isn't a strict rhythmic term some dude. They're not completely disregarding rhythm like lil b but nor are they strictly adhering to it

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:40 (eleven years ago)

jaz-o is dotted notes, not triplets

r|t|c, Monday, 15 September 2014 09:35 (eleven years ago)

i feel like i'm going to wake up and click on the equivalent of this thread in a decade's time and the hemiola argument will still be happening

lex pretend, Monday, 15 September 2014 09:41 (eleven years ago)

it's v inspiring imo, like watching cruise and kidman in far & away staking their claim for land on the gold rush new frontier, only that land is a listicle in ten years

r|t|c, Monday, 15 September 2014 09:47 (eleven years ago)

lystikal is my rap name fyi
