Thraed of Chief Keef's "Bang 3" major label abum due in September

That "Gucci Gang" track is crazy - first thing from Keef that I've heard for a while that's made me sit up and pay attention.

listen to "hundreds" and "pull up" and "make it count"

i've heard these songs.... i don't hear at all what you hear in those beats. they're completely non-functional.

if ilovemakonnen was rapping over these beats and vice was praising how "intricate and strange" the production is you'd be calling bullshit

also i have a pretty high tolerance for poorly produced beats but most of those 12hunna beats sound like total shit and i can't vibe to them at all

I'd be saying that if it was makonnen over 'sosa style' also. you're totally wrong man, i don't know how else to put it. try downloading the songs off itunes or something so you have them on good quality and aren't listening in a hasty 30 second itunes binge.

To be clear, it isn't the sort of thing I'd wanting to be listening to very much, if at all. Especially the video, really doesn't look like anyone's having much of a good time...

i think those 12hunna songs play far too much into keef's formless tendencies... i think something like "pull up" is much closer to the stuff of his 2013 mixtapes that you didn't really like than you want to admit

I imagine Keef being sort of just pushed in front of the camera in his drug stupor, everyone making sure he doesn't fall over or pass out unconscious.

who produced "jet li"? that's the best kind of keef beat imo. it's like a midpoint between the effects 12hunna uses and something like jim jonsin that forces him to use more structure

i think you're following some previous idea of how his best stuff is supposed to sound & not letting yourself be flexible enough for the new direction. the way 'make it count' works is esp clever, beat builds up this mood by adding elements over time, then dropping out and picking up again as if losing and regaining energy, it's very disorienting and immersive

the complexity of the drum programming in a record like that or 'hundreds' is to an end, they all hang together—listen to the kick drop on 'hundreds' dropping in triplet pattern, it's got this like nervous momentum while the melody twists around in this weird fancy, regal feel ... idk this is hard to describe, but this stuff is super unique...the only record that the 12hunna stuff reminds me of is meek's 'off the corner'

oh god 'bang bros' is a perfect example, you're looking for one-note euphoria whereas this stuff is much more about queasy uncertainty, ambiguity, uneveness

well "bang bros" happens to be euphoric but i just think it's a much better production. i don't hear anything inherently euphoric in the production even though durk went there with it.

TBH I think his 2014 has been better than most competing artists.

he has depth as a rapper & isn't a singles machine.

what i LIKE about new artists like keef is that he makes popular rappers like Kanye and Pusha T, for example, seem old and dated. Kanye knows hip hop is all about staying new that's why he does shit like 808s and Yeezus. He has to go completely different otherwise he's gone and forgotten. For example TI was brave getting on a track with Yung Thugger, but he managed to stay with him and not get overshadowed and sound old. Unlike say, Tyga on hookah, who's style sounds really dated and prosaic next to YT.

its' not about getting upstaged, he didn't get upstaged, that's to imply there was ever any fair competition. He was just an irrelevance. a style that was seen as cool and desirable to some people only a few years ago now ill-adapted to any song.

lol. citgo was C.I.F. bc it was a fairly marginal bonus track for him that wasn't even as big as "Kobe" or "They Know" but became this online rallying pt for the cloud rap contingent. dont get me wrong i like the song. but the argument im making for 12hunna's production is that it's kind of central to what he's doing right now, that it helps to organize a disparate selection of loosies if you find the constellation in the tracks & by & large I think 12hunna's sound has been a defining part of the '14-era Keef sound
