I like Matt, who wrote that, but I'm not sure I really 'get' that piece & the connections its trying to make. Or the strawman of white academic criticism that it's apparently an anecdote to? whenever i read academic criticism of rap it tends to be from people of color, because academia is one place where people of color have managed to make more significant inroads of influence

i also have issues w/ Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah's pieces but that's neither here nor there

i like the point about 'good'. i think that's very good. something to do something with.

I've been listening a lot to Acid Rap again recently, and I still can't quite believe how good it is. This album always feel exciting.

obviously a let down after acid rap, still waiting for the proper sequel. it's not all bad, sunday candy is still my track of the year.

if they didn't do enough for you to drop any expectations of this as "the follow-up to Acid Rap" then i think that's your issue

literally every piece about this album was like, 'this is not a follow up to acid rap' in the lede

kyle is def the album's worst part imo

i thought it was chance rapping in character for a while

it's also just kinda frustrating that Chance did a hook for the song that really feels like a very personal mission statement coming from him, and then he lets other people do the verses.

Chance always making himself adjacent to people who are ostensibly similar but not quite (Vic Mensa, Gambino, Kyle) really just serves to help me see what he gets right that other rappers in his lane get wrong.

Equal parts fun and annoying is my response too. I liked it for a couple days before filing it.

More frustrating than annoying? The way tracks stop just when they're getting going. Can see myself growing to love it tho.

yeah i didn't follow all the campaign around it, it's my issue and i'm assuming it.

Even before I saw the vid for Sunday Candy, this felt like what would happen if Michel Gondry made a rap album.

Don't understand why they chose to make you slog all the way through this quite hazy, insubstantial sprawl before you get to Sunday Candy, which is great and catchy and infuriating all at the same time.

the new track is awesome too, really what i pictured his post-acid rap music could grow into

i mostly do not fuck w/ the social experiment album but this song is spectacular

new song is pretty cool, feel like there's a greater pop song buried in there somewhere but the r&b parts over that production is pretty undeniable. might prefer the live version actually but this + "angels" and even the slowed down "sunday candy" are all very very good

if they're indicative of where his new tape is gonna be it will be a tremendous record
