Both those P4k-bait tracks are zzzzz
― The Reverend, Sunday, 24 August 2014 03:04 (eleven years ago)
And come on it's the Neptunes, tacky synths are the point
― The Reverend, Sunday, 24 August 2014 03:05 (eleven years ago)
my favorite Neps tracks are decidedly untacky, whether in Clipse, N.E.R.D or smooth-80s forms
actually it's not a word I associate with their good or bad tracks really. I guess pre-'02 maybe but that period isn't 'em at their best imo

― ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 August 2014 18:26 (eleven years ago)
lol. Not that there's no earliest-era Neps beats I dig but IMO a bunch of it's just rudimentary/not as melodically-developed as their later stuff, + the drums don't knock as hard as their later minimal stuff. It makes sense to me that they had their commercial peak in 2002
― nova, Sunday, 24 August 2014 19:29 (eleven years ago)
they had, like, a dozen indisputable classics before '02 though
― birdman junior dad (some dude), Sunday, 24 August 2014 19:33 (eleven years ago)
Like I said I don't think it's all bad (ODB/Jay singles, some Kelis songs come to mind) I just don't feel their sound in general then the way others do, i'm sry
― nova, Sunday, 24 August 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)
I don't think Q sounds good on it, but I don't think he's the problem, either. Every cover or mixtape freestyle I've heard of the song has been a slog, too. Something about the beat/pacing just sucks the life out of whoever is rapping over it.
― Evan R, Friday, August 22, 2014 4:43 PM (2 days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
This is nuts, beat and hook are awesome/perfect, could have been a hit for literally anyone though
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Sunday, 24 August 2014 20:51 (eleven years ago)
yeah "Studio" makes a strong case that a year or two from now BJ The Chicago Kid will probably still be making radio hits and Q probably will not

What This Thread Makes Plain: ILE/ILX desperately needs a general thread for bucket hat photos.
― RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 25 August 2014 00:39 (eleven years ago)
Also I need to revisit Q's album, give it another chance.
("There He Go" is probably my favorite Q song ever, or close.)
― RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 25 August 2014 00:40 (eleven years ago)
idg dude's style. Purposely sloppy? In any case I don't really feel it
― nova, Monday, 25 August 2014 00:59 (eleven years ago)
it's really depressing to me that Rick Ross's Mastermind is the one "event" rap album this year I've dug, Schoolboy Q I wasn't a fan of but Future let nova down
― nova, Monday, 25 August 2014 01:00 (eleven years ago)
Afaik his style is dirtbag
― go ahead. make vid where u rap about this new TMNT movie. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 August 2014 01:05 (eleven years ago)
d40 otm re beat/hook. I really like BJ the chi kid. Q's verses on that are no good tho.
― FKATlovestofu better (Spottie), Monday, 25 August 2014 01:48 (eleven years ago)
Not saying the Neptunes didn't have a good career but honestly think their first big song (Superthug) is still the best thing they did
― ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 25 August 2014 11:28 (eleven years ago)
the best thing Pharrell ever wrote was Teddy Riley's verse on "Rump Shaker"
― Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Monday, 25 August 2014 14:38 (eleven years ago)
always thought "studio" was one of the songs that really propped that album up
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 August 2014 14:58 (eleven years ago)
it definitely did. i shudder to imagine an 'uncompromised' album
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 00:38 (eleven years ago)
q is not a very compelling presence on basically the whole album sadly :\ like it is an okay listen overall but the radio-friendly beats on the singles are somehow more interesting than how he comes across in most of his verses

maaan disagree so much lol
I know some of their smoother shit borders on easy-listening but there's so much of that style I'd take over the chintzier sound/more rough-around-the-edges drums of their beats back then. + they got way better at straight-ahead hip-hop tracks
― nova, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 04:10 (eleven years ago)
I always feel weird when "Superthug" is such a touchstone for people cause it wasn't a hit where I live and I never heard it til like the mid-2000s. First big Neptunes joint here was the Mase track and then like "Got Your Money" or something.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:08 (eleven years ago)
yeah "Got Your Money" was def. the go-to early Neptunes hit in my world
or "Shake Ya Ass"

85$ for a concert ticket is infuriating. I really wanted to see him live.
― Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 01:09 (eleven years ago)
when he played here on his spring tour tickets were $25. but there's a whole shady cottage industry of nightclubs who book a midlevel rapper to perform for 20 minutes and charge an arm and a leg.
― some dude, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 01:14 (eleven years ago)
It's part of the local festival. All good if it helps the local festival alive, give a chant to emergent artists to perform and whatnot, but there is so little hip-hop going in this city (montreal) it ends up being very frustrating.

Ab-Soul used to be an actual good rapper, I have no idea what happened. The rest of the dudes acquit themselves pretty well.
Also, Blank Face is out today.
― poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 July 2016 13:33 (nine years ago)
I have just been listening to Blank Face, not feeling a lot of it - maybe I'm just not in the mood for it. I keep waiting for habits and contradictions 2 tbh.
― calzino, Friday, 8 July 2016 13:46 (nine years ago)
"Man of the Year" is still song of the year
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2016 14:50 (nine years ago)
^might be right
im liking this though, not sure i heard a standout killer jam but all m/l was pleasing
― johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2016 20:03 (nine years ago)
I had a bit of a stoned epiphany listening to Blank Face last night and have decided it is pretty dope after all.
― calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:19 (nine years ago)
It hasn't got anything to match some of the bangers off oxymoron, but it is still a fine album.
― calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:20 (nine years ago)
I'm in love with "Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane."
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:25 (nine years ago)
the tha dogg pound track bangs p good
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)
record is good. been pretty hit and miss artist for me but this is consistent
― moistest hoist (Spottie), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 00:21 (nine years ago)
This is amazing. Agreed that Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane is something else. Love the Vince Staples and E-40 tracks too.
― It certainly is punk of the Church of England to think that way (tangenttangent), Sunday, 17 July 2016 11:31 (nine years ago)
Even despite the inconsistency of previous albums I still loved 'em, but this one hasn't got a dud track on it and is probably his best album yet. But still my fave ever Q tracks are on habits.. and oxymoron.
― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:01 (nine years ago)
I don't know those albums at all - this is my introduction. I'll definitely revisit older stuff on the strength of this though.
― It certainly is punk of the Church of England to think that way (tangenttangent), Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:07 (nine years ago)
Oxymoron is at least half an alltime classic album, plenty on it to love.
― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:16 (nine years ago)
John Muir is another cut off Blank Face i keep repeating.
― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:30 (nine years ago)
yep
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:31 (nine years ago)
JoHn Muir is indeed a highlight, classic rider anthem with crisp live drums
You gotta admire the man's dedication to the capital "H" meme
― poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:51 (nine years ago)
i don't know what i think yet, it did sound aimless as i've seen said, but strong, likely a grower
― j., Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:49 (nine years ago)
I felt like that at first, it is deffo a grower and has a lot of strength in depth.
― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:59 (nine years ago)
good album imo
― based stress reduction (crüt), Monday, 18 July 2016 14:46 (nine years ago)
this sounds great on first listen to me
can't tell if there's anything as good as 'man of the year' or 'collard greens' but there was a huge gap between those 2 and the next best track on oxymoron, this is way more consistent
― flopson, Thursday, 21 July 2016 20:11 (nine years ago)
Yeah this was my feeling as well
