Need to point out that the National have released two albums since 2010 but have made exactly one appearance on both of these lists

i know he is super fucking popular among certain crowds but i just do not understand the appeal of lcd soundsystem

marcos, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 13:37 (eleven years ago)

The Halcyon Digest thing across both lists reminds me when I rediscover an old album and am overly excited about it for about a month then it fades away again- like they all happened to have put it back on their ipods recently.

Evan, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 13:39 (eleven years ago)

Bon Iver's now been bested by 2011 albums from Bill Callahan, St Vincent, M83, Destroyer, and Drake.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 13:39 (eleven years ago)

LCD Soundsystem is just Sha Na Na for fans of Brian Eno productions, right (xpost)

pretty much the only thing about these lists that's making me smile is the strong showing by halcyon digest.

Tim F, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:32 (eleven years ago)

the albums list is better than the songs one, although both do a great job of presenting 'the decade so far' as a giant snooze.

Gil! Scott! Heron!

campreverb, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:45 (eleven years ago)

Wonder how redundant the EOY list will be.

Evan, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:48 (eleven years ago)

Caribou Swim only at 74, and EMA and War On Drugs in top 40 = SMH forever and ever jesus fucking christ what is wrong with people

OPINIONS.

jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:51 (eleven years ago)

Well given the fact that there's not a lot of 2014 in either list, proabably not very.

Unless they decide to have just 10 entries for this year's Best of 2014 list.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:52 (eleven years ago)

At this point, it would seem that SKM is the album to beat at EOY time, right? It's mid-August, and according to their "decade so far" list it's 12 spots ahead of its closest 2014 competitor, a gap I would say is pretty significant.

Related: There is no way P4k names SKM's album #1 of 2014 in December. Can't see that happening.

alpine static, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:52 (eleven years ago)

rock is dead that's my conclusion from this list.

piscesx, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:55 (eleven years ago)

I guess it just feels like there are a lot of 2014 in there to me. I'm definitely focusing on FKA Twigs since it just came out (I wonder if they had internal arguments about including it so quickly) and Sun Kil Moon since it is so high. Likely warping my perception of the total amount.

Evan, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:56 (eleven years ago)

i don't feel like searching for the threads, but ILM's "best of the decade so far 2000-2004" results were posted in august 2004. just sayin.

However, when J0rdan and I did the best of 05-09, it was conducted in June/July of 2010.

it's way too far back for me to destroy my CPU by loading the entire thread, but whoever was asking for a parallel list with "writers' personal engagement with the music" -- assuming you'd actually be into reading this and aren't just trying to make a point, pitchfork did just that last year. (yes, I contributed to both that feature and this, but still): http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/tags/my-year-in-music/

Oh is that new Throwing Muses good? I should check it out finally.

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 15:33 (eleven years ago)

I still don't get the Taylor Swift hype.

In the end it sounds indistinguishable from the rest of the doctor's office waiting room style radio pop. Obviously though I am dismissive and never cared to listen closely or anything.

your carefully considered opinion is greatly appreciated

i'd personally prefer a middle ground where the focus is still on the music (with an open, unpresumptuous subjectivity) rather than a "my year in me" format, but i definitely find this more rewarding to read than the official list, thanks

by 2019 it'll shore up enough support to appear right at the end of the list behind Jai Paul's 2nd leaked collection of demos. i'm so excited and i just can't hide it.

I definitely never said it was carefully considered.

u can like LCD soundsystem or taylor swift but you can't like both - mutually exclusive aesthetics

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

why does LCD people never want to Taylor Swift?

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)

surely there are literally dozens of people who stan for both LCD Soundsystem and Taylor Swift on ilx

some dude, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

couldn't be

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

I like both, but "stan" is maybe overboard. I readily admit they each have faults.

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

it's either trolling or the most absurd attempt at music-related conversation i've probably ever seen to assert that liking one artist in the pop music universe means you can't like an indie darling band, or vice versa. and this is coming from someone with little more than mild appreciation for both, at best.
