although i guess "dream house" is the closest i got to a screamo jam on the list

Not sure if I've ever purposely listened to midnight city but I for sure can him that opening squawk

, Monday, 18 August 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

midnight city is definitely "empty" and if you sweat importance yeah you'll wonder whatever happened to good music and big questions like what's spring clean for the may queen but man it is classic epic nonsense

da croupier, Monday, 18 August 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

i don't like it that much, but my almost 5 year old kid loves midnight city every time it comes on the radio

tylerw, Monday, 18 August 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

I don't even want to stir up a debate again about Pitchfork's weird relationship with metal but, Deafheaven being the only "metal" entry on the list is all kinds of lol.

name one metal song that's reached any type of critical mass in the last 5 years tho

xp for all the metal they review, it is kind of weird. easily 1/5 of every record reviewed is a metal record

i was definitely very "hey if you like midnight city you should check out this dude named limahl" but once i gathered what was FUN about midnight city, whimpering about substance felt very, very besides the point

da croupier, Monday, 18 August 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

I feel like everyone bitching about "Midnight City" needs to rewatch "The Breakfast Club" to reset their context.

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Monday, 18 August 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

the new slipknot song is certainly better than anything Deafheaven's ever done

probably there is a lot to complain about in midnight city but 'no hooks' is a bit ridiculous in my opinion

Van Horn Street, Monday, 18 August 2014 19:33 (nine years ago) link

ahahaha omg that slipknot song rules

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 18 August 2014 19:34 (nine years ago) link

"Midnight City" has a massive hook and a massively dull singer who gets smothered by it. A lot of these songs have the same trouble (Ariel Pink). I get that when Boz Scaggs went New Wave he had to shout really loud but

yeah, that's a fair point. i just think they've really got a great stable of metal writers right now and it's a shame for them to be mostly shut out of big features like this. i'd have loved some more Kim Kelly or Grayson blurbs.

, Monday, 18 August 2014 19:43 (nine years ago) link

it is pretty good but i agree with alfred that the singer is very weak, the rest of the song overwhelms the vocals

Oh my god they just ran the BA bow bow BA through a filter

It sounds like I'm underwater

The BA bow bow BA sound like speeder bikes from Return Of The Jedi (and thus I feel like I'm 5 when that song is on)

faghetti (fgti), Monday, 18 August 2014 19:55 (nine years ago) link

I do not like that new Slipknot tune, and I like a few of their singles. Co-sign on the "Rocket Skates" love though - massive tune. (That or "Leathers" or "Tempest" would have been fine parallel-universe inclusions.)

as Pitchfork haemorrhages readers

is this really happening?

dead man walking: http://www.spin.com/articles/all-333-phish-songs-ranked/

kidding aside, it's an interest question in light of the big BuzzFeed news.

campreverb, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:12 (nine years ago) link

yea how is p4k's readership? they seem bigger and more established than ever

marcos, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:13 (nine years ago) link

They're a bigger brand but it seems like they have less direct influence re: breaking any artist or band.

What's the big buzzfeed news? Xp

, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:15 (nine years ago) link

You know one of these things in isolation seems like just another tech deal, but viewed as a whole, I think it speaks to the ongoing rapid changes in content
1. Big time Silicon Valley VC making a $50 million investment, http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/11/technology/a-move-to-go-beyond-lists-for-content-at-buzzfeed.html
2. Apple acquisition of Beats
3. Move to curated music for the streaming services (this is probably most significant in terms of Pitchfork, and thus the tie-up with Beats). excellent piece from the wsj: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304256404579449163704994966

As opposed to when?

Evan, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

Already, most of BuzzFeed’s revenue is derived from BuzzFeed Creative, the company’s 75-person unit dedicated to creating for brands custom video and list-style advertising content that looks similar to its own editorial content.

ugh

― Evan, Monday, August 18, 2014 4:41 PM (13 minutes ago)

Before six out of every ten people on the internet had his/her own music blog.

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 18 August 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

So a higher quantity of blogs weigh into people's decisions more now? Or do you mean bloggers are less likely to follow masses because they want to pride themselves tastemakers with unique opinions?

Evan, Monday, 18 August 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

...and almost everyone is a blogger so there is less mass hype merely based on pitchfork's perspective on a given artist?
