Is the follow-up worth a listen?

Big Boi featuring B.o.B is the Sublime With Rome of rap music

vicious lies & dangerous rumors = one of the biggest musical disappointments in recent memory. gave it a couple chances and immediately set about scrubbing it from memory.

I don't remember it getting any fanfare at all when it came out. Reminds me of when Idlewild came out. I know it's technically a soundtrack but you'd think the follow-up to Speakerboxx/The Love Below would have had some excitement behind it.

3kDk (dog latin), Thursday, 14 August 2014 08:37 (eleven years ago)

Idlewild > this album

what do y'all call that around here, challops? lol

really though I do like this album, I just always thought it was uneven. + Big Boi's basically a solid consistent rapper who's rocks one core style most of the time, not anything mindblowing generally, and some of the "he's better than Andre" post-Love Below sour-grapes revisionism is super o_O to me

nova, Thursday, 14 August 2014 08:46 (eleven years ago)

Big Boi has always been a better rapper than Andre

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Thursday, 14 August 2014 12:24 (eleven years ago)

there's a massive gap between the two's rapping on Stankonia, some of my favorite Andre verses ever vs. generally solid Big Boi verses

don't get this argument at all. Is it cuz Andre became too "out-there"/eccentric and people think it's lame? or something else. idk but it's not really close IMO

nova, Friday, 15 August 2014 07:30 (eleven years ago)

It is because it is much more difficult to do what Big Boi does than what Andre does.

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Friday, 15 August 2014 08:43 (eleven years ago)

Srs question tho has Andre done anything apart frm a few guest spots post-Love Below anyway? Googled and it seemed not

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Friday, 15 August 2014 09:00 (eleven years ago)

you mean has he released a solo album that you missed?

some dude, Friday, 15 August 2014 12:02 (eleven years ago)

Yeah it just kinda seemed like he must have in some format, like eight songs on a soundtrack or something like that

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Friday, 15 August 2014 12:10 (eleven years ago)

Kinda feel like this is historical revisionism based on post-Stankonia Andre tbh

this is an "Eminem is TECHNICALLY the best" style argument. regardless of its truth, Andre's flow is better/more interesting & to me he's a more compelling personality

nova, Saturday, 16 August 2014 21:17 (eleven years ago)

Lol eminem

Οὖτις, Saturday, 16 August 2014 23:36 (eleven years ago)

i'm kind of intrigued by what djp says... why is it more difficult to rap like big boi?

just sayin, Saturday, 16 August 2014 23:58 (eleven years ago)

He raps faster n shit

nova, Sunday, 17 August 2014 00:42 (eleven years ago)

Eminem seems like he's going from overrated to underrated as a rapper lately

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 17 August 2014 03:52 (eleven years ago)

is eminem still a thing

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 August 2014 18:53 (eleven years ago)

He probably still sells more records than anyone except Drake & Macklemore

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 17 August 2014 19:14 (eleven years ago)

but not in a thing sort of way

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 August 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

I just found that the Be Still (one of my highlights of the album) has less than 200 k views on youtube. I'm surprised.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 17 August 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)

I think Em's following may be more characteristic of a metal band, unhip but large contingent of white dudes of a certain age, v loyal

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 17 August 2014 20:02 (eleven years ago)

colloquially, he's never stopped being played loudly from cars ime

meter-wise, it isn't just that Big Boi raps fast, it's that he does this staccato thing where he often raps around the beat and throws pauses in at weird spots (his verse on "Gasoline Dreams" comes to mind) so that replicating it is more difficult because even though it sounds 'off' it's very precise.

with that being said, it isn't like Andre 3000 was any slouch in the meter dept either, and lyrically they both brought different things to the table in their primes for me.

ehhh I get the "c'mon guys he's still rapping" sentiment especially on Relapse stupid accents and all, but there's so many problems with his music/delivery since his hiatus (there were before, just not as much) that it doesn't really matter

and I always say he's still real popular but completely disconnected from the center of the genre, I never hear his songs on urban radio. Maybe "Berzerk" once or twice after it dropped? Otherwise though it's just the obvious Rihanna crossover grabs on Top 40

nova, Sunday, 17 August 2014 21:52 (eleven years ago)

...which are super successful in Top 40 terms! Best comparison, after that "worst reunion" thread, might be Weezer or something - the hiatus seemed huge at the time and the dropoff in quality is obvious, but if you weren't paying attention the hiatus now fades and the career just looks like "yeah, mid-tier guy, sells in big numbers for his age/peer group/etc." Not the megastar he was in 2002 but in a surprisingly good position all things considered.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 17 August 2014 23:18 (eleven years ago)

Eminem sells massive numbers. There's a huge divide between the level of adulation and commercial success.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 August 2014 23:20 (eleven years ago)

a lot of times big selling artists who are the worst type of shit possible will have that divide

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 August 2014 23:38 (eleven years ago)

em had his day in the sun tho
then he became a nu metal band

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 August 2014 23:39 (eleven years ago)

weird that that "Rap God" video has more views than any of Drake's songs.

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Sunday, 17 August 2014 23:50 (eleven years ago)

MMLP2 sold more than any of Drake's albums too

some dude, Sunday, 17 August 2014 23:57 (eleven years ago)

I'm just saying if ppl think Em only was popular because of technical skills you don't remember how you could throw a dead cat in 2000 and hit a super skilled underground sub rawkus rhymesayers dude...Em did create a real persona

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 18 August 2014 01:27 (eleven years ago)

nah I don't think it's that. I own his first three albums I'm just generally not in the mindframe to listen to 'em these days, although SSLP has some funny-ass tracks

nova, Monday, 18 August 2014 01:39 (eleven years ago)

I do feel like the CURRENT Em stans emphasize how technically good he still is & it's like I don't give a shit, he rhymes like he's constipated & has garbage-ass hooks and beats

nova, Monday, 18 August 2014 01:40 (eleven years ago)

I think it's interesting whenever rap arguments devolve into discussing rappers' technical abilities bc it makes me think of the guitar virtuoso vs. alternarock slacker guitarist arguments of my youth and I wonder who the "sloppy but creative" rapper would be, like the analog of Grasshopper from Mercury Rev.
