Really where are you playing? I'm sick of paying for overpriced Leonard Cohen tickets.

so my buddy is flying from LA to SF to see Throbbing Gristle and then flying out the next day to see MBV with me in Denver! The things some people will do to avoid Coachella ... :D
― tylerw, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 22:45 (seventeen years ago)
that's how much it is for ONE ticket to David Byrne here in June (not going to that), so it almost seems reasonable!
― akm, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)
finally braved the super shitty livenation site and bought tix for the Denver show. (thanks for reminding me, livenation, why i rarely go to concerts these days). SO EXCITED.
― tylerw, Friday, 3 April 2009 23:47 (seventeen years ago)
HOOS do you have a ticket yet?
― ilxor, Saturday, 4 April 2009 05:22 (seventeen years ago)
Guys, if you haven't seen them yet you're in for a real fucking treat. I flew out to NY last fall and they were out of this world. Just spellbinding, fucking incredible music. Transfixing.

I'm shocked that the Seattle show hasn't sold out yet. Have they sold out in other cities?
― van smack, Monday, 6 April 2009 02:17 (seventeen years ago)
don't even think they sold out LA ... crowded, but not sold out.
― tylerw, Monday, 6 April 2009 02:53 (seventeen years ago)
Have they sold out in other cities?
Not in Austin, but they're playing a 3,000 person venue. The next smallest is 1,200 which would be sold out in a flash, soooo... not expecting it to sell out, maybe 1,500 to 2,000 people at the show in a couple weeks. Doubt it will sell out, though.
― ilxor, Monday, 6 April 2009 03:35 (seventeen years ago)
as stated in that The Cure tread: i have, through work in Los Angeles, come across people associated with Coachella. i asked, someone very high up in the My Bloody Valentine camp if were are to get a new album and he said, something to the effect of, "we are guaranteed new music by My Bloody Valentine."
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 03:49 (seventeen years ago)
I was going to post that a "secret" LA show is scheduled for the El Rey this Thursday night but I ended up reading this thread over again. Great stuff!
Here's the link: http://thescenestar.typepad.com/ss/2009/04/my-bloody-valentine-to-play-precoachella-show-at-the-el-rey.html
Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 10am.

I still can't quite get my head around the fact that I'm going to see MBV three times in six months - and that one of the shows is mere walking distance from my apt.
― Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 06:21 (seventeen years ago)
heh heh, my friend who lives in LA is probably kicking himself -- he's flying out here for the Denver show! oh well, it'll be totally fun. He'll probably go to the El Rey show anyway.

Crazy feeling, isn't it. I'll be missing Thursday, I'll be up at EMP -- seeing them in October means I don't have screaming jealousy per se but I *will* be sad if they end up playing some new songs, which I suspect will be the case. Oh well, wait on the full album and tour for that, then.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 16:42 (seventeen years ago)
would be nuts if they played new stuff ... what do you think -- will it be things from the "lost" follow-up to Loveless? Or totally new stuff? I'd assume the former, but who know ...
― tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 16:53 (seventeen years ago)
If anything I would assume the latter.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, maybe. just seems like Shields is ummm not the most prolific songwriter, so he might rely on already-written stuff. But I guess the lost record is rumored to be all drum n bass-y? So that might not work.
― tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
Like I said upthread I'd be totally happy if they began the set by announcing "This is a song we stopped working on in 1994" and broke into a half-hour of demolition jungle.
― Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 17:25 (seventeen years ago)
My fear would by they'd say "This is a song we stopped working on in 1998" rather than 94.
― caek, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
or maybe "This is a song we wrote hurriedly last night, because we found out our booking agent promised the Coachella people new music."
― tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
or "this is our tribute to Elton John"...

Interview with Shields here: http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Blogs/Music?oid=oid%3A767977
OTR: Did you try out any new material?
KS: Not much, no, to be honest. We’re still working in the past. Even all the work I’ve done in the studio this year has largely been finishing off that record from the late Nineties.
OTR: Is that close to completion?
KS: Closer. At the time I was working on it there were about 15 to 17 tracks and there were only six or eight that I was really sure of. I was going through the process of actually narrowing it down and working on stuff and going, "You know what, this isn’t really working." Now the 11 tracks that are all going to on the record are clear. There was a reasonable amount of false starts ‘cause it’s basically half-done. It was half-made. It’s a weird process, sort of, restarting a record from such a long time ago. I had to be quite natural with it and not to rush it.
― tylerw, Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)
> not to rush it
lol
― koogs, Thursday, 16 April 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)
don't rush it, kev
― tylerw, Thursday, 16 April 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
Y'know I really love MBV and all, and that's an interesting interview but the whole "we make no money" thing is getting pretty old. By my reckoning they sold over 20,000 tickets on the uk tour last year, sold out every show, and all Shields can do is say they ended up in debt. Meh. And as for "I had to be quite natural with it and not to rush it", all I can think of is:
How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice little story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protagonist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? (voice getting higher pitched) Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah? (voice returns to normal) No, no, you deserve some time off.
― Bill A, Thursday, 16 April 2009 20:10 (seventeen years ago)
well, i dunno, he says they spent $600,000 just getting ready to tour ... You think they've profited that much (after paying road crew, etc.)? I'm asking, I actually have no idea.
― tylerw, Thursday, 16 April 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)
Nah, I'm just crabby over Kev's whining and lack of actual ability to even get the remasters out. By the sound of it they must have got a real bung from Coachella, which would have made it worthwhile. And, in honesty, they did sound *incredible* in Manchester last year so if the bulk was spent on equipment then fair enough and that expense obviously gets offset the more shows they play.
