^That is really good news.
I just heard it for the first time in a local record store. Even just from hearing 5-6 songs in there, I can tell it's the obvious best record of 2007 that I was missing last year.
― Z S, Sunday, 6 April 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
I like this but I don't understand why Instituto Mexicano del Sonido has been overlooked while this is being hyped to the maximum.
― danzig, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:10 (eighteen years ago)
this is pretty good - a little bit repetitive for my taste and not as murky as Person Pitch. Not sure if it was worth the $30 I had to spend on it :(
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 June 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah when is the XL version coming out?
― Alex in SF, Friday, 27 June 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)
Definitely one of the greatest bits of Sonar, and he only played instead of a DJ set because Konono no.! pulled out, a mixed blessing.
― I know, right?, Friday, 27 June 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
Anyone into his band, Coconut?
― pinkie, Monday, 6 October 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)
Neat mix:

it's hillllllarious how people will do ANYTHING to distance themselves from what's considered "cool" or "good", a la saying "el guincho is much better than panda bear". aside from the obvious musical superiority of person pitch, what alegranza has is utter soullessness. i think it's a great album, but one's a party album and one's art. whatever, keep striving to be different
― Kevin Keller, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)
El Guincho is much better than Panda Bear. Yay for soullessness.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)
"but one's a party album and one's art"
I was trying to figure which one is which in your equation, but then I decided I didn't care.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
xposts. are you a sockpuppet?
Although I do agree that Person Pitch is the better album.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Friday, 24 October 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
I like Person Pitch more than Allegranza but the argument that one is a party album and one is art, or that one is soulless, is such bullshit that I want to change my ranking of the two albums just so I can be on the other side from Kevin Keller.
― Tim F, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)
I like Person Pitch (I'm listening to it right now just to remind myself that I liked it) but Alegranza was like this year's perfect summer driving/running record (even though it came out last year) for me.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
I think it's less that I don't like Allegranza (your encapsulation sounds about right Alex) and more than Person Pitch was my second favourite album from last year.
― Tim F, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
These albums don't really remind me of each other that much, but yeah, I like Person Pitch a lot more.
― I know, right?, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
I think each record has a similar vibe, but they are going for a very different effect.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)
Okay I've listened to Person Pitch and I still like Alegranza better so yeah apparently I'm soulless.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
so promos of this are out on XL now, I forget what the street date is.
― sleeve, Saturday, 25 October 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago)
It's out for real. I saw it last week.
― Alex in SF, Saturday, 25 October 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)
It came out on the 6th October in the UK at least. Vinyl to follow on Monday (27th).
― krakow, Saturday, 25 October 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)
Instore at Rough Trade East in approx. 2 hours time. Might pick up an XL copy while I'm there as my original cd seems to have packed up. Although I might wait for the vinyl instead.
Can't get into Person Pitch at all the way I got into this, although I don't get Animal Collective much either. I try, I really do.

stfu kevin keller
― max, Saturday, 25 October 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)
i saw him on fri night and he was great!! hilarious show, looked like a holiday camp cabaret act from the 80s, rinky-dink keyboards and tacky lights and his napoleon dynamite-looking friend goofing around next to him. totally disarming banter between songs too. audience did a conga line. basically, awesome.
― dugong.jpg (jabba hands), Monday, 2 February 2009 02:12 (seventeen years ago)
tanlines remix of kalise (and their track bejan, hat tip to 20jfg) are both cool: http://www.myspace.com/tanlinestheband
― caek, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:22 (seventeen years ago)
I like this.
― Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
wow i just posted a huge disgusted rant about this in the poll thread. makes sense that people compare it to p***a b**r. dude sounds like a drunken tramp and i am disgusted with you all for liking this terrible music and indirectly allowing it into my world
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

(it does suck though)
i gotta say it made a lot more sense live than on record - having an audience brought out the carnival vibe a bit better.
― unaustralian (jabba hands), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 23:12 (seventeen years ago)
so, so, so good
― Matos W.K., Wednesday, 11 February 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
lex when you abandon your "i like it=it's not indie, i dislike it=it's indie" rule you might actually enjoy yourself
― Local Garda, Thursday, 12 February 2009 01:03 (seventeen years ago)
the more drunken tramp music the better over innocent smoothie pop
― Local Garda, Thursday, 12 February 2009 01:05 (seventeen years ago)
still dig this record
― LOOK WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLA (deej), Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:07 (seventeen years ago)
iz gr8!
― the lexx of extreme metal (Ioannis), Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:41 (seventeen years ago)
off-topic, but Ioannis, did you end up digging that Saft album?
― Mordy, Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:44 (seventeen years ago)
i need to listen to it some more really, but i do appreciate its range at the very least.
― the lexx of extreme metal (Ioannis), Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:56 (seventeen years ago)
I keep seeing this in the shops and keep thinking I ought to get it but I don't know about the "drunken tramp pop" thing - as long it's not like hauntology Pogues I guess it's worth checking out.
― Bernard Braden Misreads Stephen Leacock (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 12 February 2009 11:13 (seventeen years ago)
Would I like this?
― Kiitën (admrl), Monday, 28 June 2010 00:23 (fifteen years ago)
yes
― max, Monday, 28 June 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)
alright then
― Kiitën (admrl), Monday, 28 June 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)
it's good
― Sensational Howard (admrl), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i like it too. its like, avalanches is shortwave radio from the adjoining island, this is dancing up next 2 the speaker on the dancefloor
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)
New album sounds really good on first listen. Shiny rhythmic uptempo dancehall pop, a lot sharper than Alegranza. It's ridiculously cheerful.
― Tim F, Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)
"FM Tan Sexy" kinda amazing.
― Tim F, Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)
Not heard the new one, but I'm looking forward to seeing him live in November. It's at a really small venue, which is going to be very different from seeing him rock the crowd at Primavera '08.
― emil.y, Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)
I enjoyed this a lot. He just played at Spaceland and I missed it
― .. help? (admrl), Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think there was any better place to hear El Guincho than at Primavera '08 with several people jumping around going bonkers as the sun was coming up (or was it going down? I can't remember too well!) I'm sad I missed most of his set. Alegranza was my Person Pitch of 2008. For me it's the ultimate in galloping dance beats, latin rhythms and Beach Boy/Animal Collective call and response.
Emily, when/where you seeing him?
― village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
The Brighton show - 9th November, I think? It's at The Hope, which is a pretty nice venue but very small. Hopefully it'll get a good 'intimate' vibe rather than a 'why does nobody else like El Guincho?' one.
