CT, Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dan Butt - welcome! The more people helping the better. Go ahead and buy the Scrugg, I don't think anyone else has gotten to it yet. I'll be getting the Cajun Comp, like I said, with "Drunkard's Dream" but I don't expect to be able to YSI it for another week and half or so.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I have a zip of all the songs as of a week of go or so. Zipped it is 665+ mb. I tried to make a yousendit, but to no avail. I'll try and make a newer and yousendit if possible.

Matthew Walker (thatkid225), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Looks like the Mel and Tim B-side has never appeared on CD - are the Stax-Volt singles boxes only A-sides? (So much for being complete.) The single can be had from any number of places though.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm taking a break from seeding the peel tv show. Need processing for admin work. Doesn't help when everyone gets to 100% and fucks off but then I expected that!

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Hey thanks for the Nilsson!

If no one else has already, I'll try to get Jerry Byrd then--at the least "Memories of Maria" but hopefully "Invitation" as well (think "Invitation" is also known as "Invitation to Love")

C. O'Leary (jparker), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

the Jerry Byrd 45 is on Gemm here for less than $5:
http://www.gemm.com/ddc/search.pl?&disp_ad_format_mode=0&artist=BYRD%2CJERRY&title=MEMORIES+OF+MARIA

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

all right--the Jerry Byrd 45 with "memories" and "invitation" is on its way..should get it in a week or so.

C. O'Leary (jparker), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Alex,

Thanks for the file. I very much appreciate your efforts.

John Peel sent me his personal spare copy of a CD by Medicine Head called "New Bottles/Old Medicine" with a hand written note. If anyone is interested, I can upload pictures + the two tracks "His Guiding Hand" & "This Love of Old". These are already uploaded, but this CD was John's personal copy. It clearly meant a lot to him as the two tracks finished up in his box & more than one copy. Someone would have to briefly explain how I upload a song from windows media player + pictures.

I will also try assist with missing tracks.

Regards

Bob

Bob Robinson, Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Repost

A zip of all the songs up until about a week ago. There may be duplicates and incorrect songs in it, as this was before I cleaned it all up. It is a big file.

Bob Robinson, Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

hi just recently discovered this and you lot are doing sterling work....im happy to order some of the missing records from gemm but would like to know if anyone else has already ordered any of them...if not i will order the records tomorrow morning...ive got afriend in south africa phoning record shops for the sipho record so fingers crossed...many thanks to all of you for the tracks i was missing.kev.

kevin furr (kevfurr), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Kevin-- just to re-emphasize, I did buy the Jerry Byrd 45, so that one's taken care of.

002 Al Ferrier - I'm Not Drinking More
008 Arthur K Adams - Wildwood flower

These are about as obscure, really, as the Sipho record...i've seen barely any information about them, esp. Adams.

C. O'Leary (jparker), Thursday, 17 November 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

I think I can throw light on the Marc Bolan interview. John effectively broke Marc Bolan by taking him around to perform on his DJ gigs. John & Mark were very close friends. Unfortunately, when Marc became famous he had no time for John and that hurt him very much. I need to hear the interview to decide whether John kept it for fond memories of friendship with Marc or to remind himself never to put his trust so deeply into one person (family excepted). A simple thankyou from Marc would have gone a long long way, but sadly it was never said. In Marc's defense, he was only 28 when he died and if the fame had gone to his head, he wasn't yet mature enough to deal with it for what it was. Just watched John inducted into the UK hall of fame. Typical that they have to wait until someone dies!!!

Thanks to everyone who's ordering singles for this--it means a lot!

Just to catch everyone up (since there's a lot in the thread now): I'm still working local connections for the Pocket Fishrmen B-side. As far as I can tell it's never appeared on cd. The XL Capris B side is on its way to me from Australia, so it may take a couple of weeks to show.

patita (patita), Friday, 18 November 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

I am tracking the mighty avengers on ebay & hope to purchase so we can get the B side. I thought I recognised a unique quality in the So Much in Love A side. It was written by Jagger & Richard of the Rolling Stones!!!! I collect vinyl by the thousands anyway, so happy to purchase anything that is original to the box.

im going to order easy teeth, the squirrels and ken colyers jazzmen tomorrow from gemm

kevin furr (kevfurr), Friday, 18 November 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

thanks domestic empire for seeding the documentary and to everyone for the songs. i have nothing to add except a couple of scraps of information about the few missing a-sides no one has already bought.
1) 36 Jane Bond, "hod rod lincoln" (with the bangles playing on it) is on an album called "politically correct." it can be found but it's not usually cheap.
2) 110 ramrods, "zig zag" was not an a-side. "ghost riders of the sky" was the a-side which has already been included.

riley, Friday, 18 November 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

I believe the Ken Colyers Jazzmen has already been gotten by DomesticEmpire and just awaits ripping (along with the Marc Bolan interview). I'm very happy to see folks jumping in to get the remaining singles!

patita (patita), Friday, 18 November 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dan Butt,

I think I have managed to acquire the Scrugg side (ie the Real Geraldine one) overnight. I'll check the quality when I get home tonight and if its OK, will YSI

Any chance of a repost of Cheeze? Thanks to all for this amazing collective effort.

biscuit, Friday, 18 November 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

More research:
the Firemen single was released on Le Cam, a label out of Fort Worth. I'll poke around locally and see what I can find. It has no real presence on google other than in the box. Here's a partial discography of the label (sadly missing Firemen):
http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/lecam.htm

The Clefs of Lavender Hill is for sale here:
http://www.wegotrecords.com/cgi/date_records.php
It's also popular with whoever does the Teenage Wasteland show on WFMU, and is in RealAudio in this broadcast:
http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/12001

Poor Dreamland Express has the misfortune of being a John Denver tune, a Hindi film, and a children's movie. One of the few sites that has any info is in Czech, and IDs Stephen Stewart as their guitarist:
http://lege.cz/win/hudba/enid.htm

There's an adorable tribute to the Freshmen here: http://www.irishshowbands.net/pg_freshmen.htm
This website values the single at 8 pounds:
http://www.foggynotion.btinternet.co.uk/punkf.htm

Five pounds for Mike Spenser and the Cannibals here:
http://www.vinyltap.co.uk/shop/artist/Mike+Spenser+And+The+Cannibals.aspx
this site has the album cover:

Spit Out is damnably hard to search for, and I've found nothing.

the cheeze single.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 18 November 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

that was a REPOST, sorry.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 18 November 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

I believe the Marc Bolan interview single was pressed after he died, so it's more a memento of past friendship I would have thought. Also, that John Peel is on the b-side, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 18 November 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

did anyone do anything about those gemm links i posted above? like i say i'm geographically challenged with respect to postal charges but if there's a tame american who'd like to buy them i'll be happy to chip in via paypal. 10 quid do? (about 17 dollars, minus paypal fees)

a bunch of these records do seem to be in the box because john is personally involved - the emerlist davjack thing, the bill oddie thing, the bolan interview. was 'song sung blue' ever a single?

koogs (koogs), Friday, 18 November 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

No, it wasn't.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 18 November 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Ah, the old Emerlist Davjack dispute rears its head again! I know we've no sure way of knowing, but I still reckon that the Emerlist Davjack in the box is the original single, not the Peel radio trailer, even though that was also pressed on 7". Two reasons:

1. Can't imagine that a radio trailer would bear the same name as one of the band's songs.

2. Can't imagine that the trailer would actually appear on the Immediate label (as listed) - it would be an acetate/white label.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 18 November 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's tuff to know. Stick the documentary on slomo and see what 'peeks out'.

e.g. I can see a Vocalion single sleeve and think "That's the Roy Head single".

But short of someone picking it out and wacving it, I don't know.

The 'acetate', if that's what it is, might be in an 'Immediate' sleeve, causing the confusion.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 18 November 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

and i think it is 8)

1. he dug it out to play laura cantrell in the 2003 christmas carol concert thing. on the same show he played Wine Wine Wine, also from the box.

2. the show lisitings from 20030501 include:
Unknown - 'The Thoughts Of Emerlist Dargeck 7" Promo' (Immediate R
ecords)

3. emerlist davjack is an lp as well as a track, this is a trailer for the entire lp (see #2). i can also point you to 5 other mistakes in the times list if you like 8)

4. it's added colour, because it contains john's voice and the pig laughing.

not that it matters - we have both so it's all good

koogs (koogs), Friday, 18 November 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

ok, scratch #1. it was Nina Nastasia on 20030501 that he dug it out for (i always get those two confused). Laura was 20031223 and he played both Wine Wine Wine and Don't Play Blue Eyes from the box. scratch #4 as well as it wasn't really proof. nevermind 8)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 18 November 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

anon_andrews (koogs), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

By my reckoning, we have already accumulated 79.3% of all the tracks in The Box, and 88.5% of the A sides. When you include all the tracks that are in the mail, that becomes 86.1% of all tracks and 93.9% of A sides. Good going, you lot (and keep going too!)

CT, Friday, 18 November 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

075 Flat Out is on the end of Get Flat btw. someone needs to split that into two files.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

A huge thanks to everyone who's shelling out money for these. My cajun comp set me back $20 -- and I'll I really wanted was one B-side! But hey, it's for a great cause. I hope it arrives - it looked like availability was uncertain. Thanks for the math, CT, the end is near.
