don't think anyone's mentioned jerry lee lewis - which is an (admittedly dated) example of scandal taking down a talented pop career for good

you have to remember we're working in a context where ike turner's done just fine

yeah but if picture of tina turner beaten half to death had been plastered on the cover of people magazine or whatever, might be different?

also what is really the timeline on Spector become well known for his troubles (beyond the usual "perfectionist"/"difficult" tags that are easy to initially handwave when someone is hugely successful and revered)? because he's produced only a handful of projects since the early '70s, none of which approach his early chart reign.

Anyway obv none of these people is a good direct comparison for Brown (a lot were at the end of careers, some of their crimes were a lot less heinous, some were more heinous, and yeah some have left the country--big fucking whoop, most of them are hideously unattractive.) My only point was that it is well within the realm of reason to see Brown having a(nother) career at some point. Will he be completely unscathed? No. Still making money in the entertainment biz (don't forget guys he's a triple threat)? Maybe.

This Christmas is a 2007 christmas comedy-drama film produced by Rainforest Films and distributed by Screen Gems. Written, produced and directed by Preston A. Whitmore II, it is a Christmastime story that centers around the Whitfield family, whose eldest son has come home for the first time in four years. The film's title refers to the 1970 Donny Hathaway song of the same name, which is covered by Chris Brown in the film as well. The film received a PG-13 from the MPAA for comic sexual content and some violence and 12A by the British Board of Film Classification for moderate violence and sex references.

― wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:42 (seventeen years ago)
there's this part at the end where the cast, at this point out of character, split into two lines forming a kind of runway and every person takes turns dancing down the runway, one of the more randomly heartwarming things i've ever experienced in a movie

just to clarify my oft c&pd 3am drunken post w/the indecipherable ending i could see chris brown hanging around having some minor hits and being partially rehabbed but his career as it was of #1 hits big endorsement deals prime slots at the vmas fawning media coverage etc is over.
the reasons why this story is different than a lot of past celebrity scandals and why brown will be rejected by a good percentage of fans and corporate interests are: it exactly contradicts his carefully crafted image which is the basis for a lot of his appeal, he beat the shit out of a v popular celebrity who a lot of people care abt and feel like they know personally, theres at least once photo of the suffering inflicted making the whole thing much more real than if it was just a story.
i could see if rihanna carries through w/the rumored public reconciliation it hurting her career too. people dont want to hav to think abt a fucked up outcome to a fucked up event from this music they just want a lil fun and positive emotion. jettisoning his ass and releasing a since u been gone would be the way to go from a career and life standpoint imo.

Maaan, FUCK Chris Brown and his career. Honestly, who cares? The better question is why isn't the Rihanna thread getting much attention? Why is the initial reaction to discuss Chris' career and not hers?
― tea cake, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 00:03 (seventeen years ago)
we hav another rihanna thread on the secret bord
― ice cr?m, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not on 77 so, with Rihanna aren't we all assuming that while she takes this time to hopefully sort her head out and figure out what she's going to do, all the huge songwriters/producers are trying to write the best freaking songs of their career for her?
― i wants a sandwich now (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 09:43 (seventeen years ago)
It's obvious that this is going to make her a bigger star (may have already...), whereas with Chris the whole thing is murkier.

in most instances of violent crime, people spend more time discussing the criminal's background/motives/future/prosecution, and when it comes to the victim people mostly wish them well and a speedy recovery. why is this difficult for you to understand?

Well, the backlash has already started. A lot of people are critizing her for going back to Brown (and marrying him, as the rumour goes).

― da croupier, Thursday, 12 March 2009 20:20 (seventeen years ago)
I don't wish Rihanna any kind of backlash or consequence regardless of what decisions she should or shouldn't make right now, but I have to admit it would be kind of awesome of they tried to turn this into a cynical publicity stunt/comeback duet and the public reacted with total disgust and it was a flop.
― som nambulistino (some dude), Thursday, 12 March 2009 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
