lots of differences between that and this, first and foremost being there wasn't an omnipresent media reporting on every ike beatdown

and how (omar little), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

my only point is that CELEBRITY BEATS OTHER CELEBRITY is in no way a guaranteed career ender.

if CB releases a genuinely affecting, well-received "baby I'm sorry" ballad or whatever and he and Rihanna stay together the press will eat that shit up

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

not if the song sucks

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

if CB releases a well-received "i'm sorry i beat your face in" ballad it will be well-received

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Chris Brown would have to turn into Eminem before that ballad would be well-received.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

Look I'd like to think I live in the kind of world where Chris Brown will spend a long time in jail and that when he gets out he'll be persona-non-grata for the entire entertainment industry. I have no personal desire to see Brown be successful. But history has shown that not all people who committ scummy scummy acts get the comeuppance they richly deserve (see Roman Polanski.)

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

It isn't a foregone conclusion that consumers en masse are willing to forgive Chris Brown, even if Rihanna and Akon are.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think it's a foregone conclusion. I do think it is a distinct possibility.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

(That was mostly a clumsy lead-in for "did you guys see the batshit crazy stuff Akon said re: 'oh, this is just what couples go through'?" but I do think adamantly deciding how this will play out for CB in the future is a mug's game (and yes, I was playing it, too))

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i9Th9k88njmoeIh1Nmw5KLNC1V1gD96R97200

"At the end of the day, what Rihanna and Chris went through is nothing different than what couples go through every day," he said. "They have problems, they go through issues, and some of them, of course, expand to domestic violence which I don't in any way condone. But, you know, sometimes you really can't control it and some people just need to seek help and figure out ways to deal with their emotions and how they deal with issues and certain things."

Nice mix of reasonable statement and total point-missing there (the fact that it happens in a lot of relationships is even more reason to highlight it because we don't want it to happen at all).

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

Akon is a polygamist blood diamond profiteer who assaults his own fans onstage, and he still has a career, so I can't fault him being optimistic for CB.

blame it on the HOOS got you steenin' loose (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

"some of them, of course, expand to domestic violence"

OF COURSE??

Surmounter, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

i'm not sure what that means. OF COURSE, women will sometimes get beaten

Surmounter, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

i mean yeah who knows what will come for chris but when we're discussing a teenybop cipher with three years worth of hits going "ahhh but people forgave these legendary figures (who went into exile and/or were seen as a fruit loop for the rest of their life) for their crimes" takes cynicism back around into naivete

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

I would like to say that he meant to say "unfortunately" but I really can't.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

"At the end of the day, what Rihanna and Chris went through is nothing different than what couples go through every day,"

vs

When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against he passenger window of the vehicle, causing an approximate one-inch raised circular contusion.

"Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.'s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

"Brown pulled Robyn F. close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle ... and Robyn F. turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it.

"Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F.'s left and right carotid arteries, causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness.

and how (omar little), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

akon also once claimed to have a secret hit on the country charts so speaking of fruit loops

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

Rascal Flats feat. Akon

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

"who went into exile and/or were seen as a fruit loop for the rest of their life"

Uh not quite.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

maybe he's taylor swift

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

"who went into exile and/or were seen as a fruit loop for the rest of their life"

michael jackson, r kelly, phil spector, roman polanski, bobby brown all seem to fit this bill. if you really want to say "oh but james brown maybe chris brown is like that" go ahead.

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

Roman Polanski left this country (for a number of reasons) but from day one there were a huge number of Polanski apologists (hell they released a Polanski apology film last year) and it's pretty hard to argue it's hurt him in the artistic accolades department.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with Dan though. This is a silly game.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

esp when you bring up "the artistic accolades dept" when comparing roman polanski to chris brown.

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Forget it, Jake. It's "Run It!"

blame it on the HOOS got you steenin' loose (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

I was bringing it up in comparison to seen as a fruit loop for the rest of his life actually, but whatever. Sleep secure in the knowledge that his career is over. I hope you are right.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

i guess you missed the "and/or"

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't miss the fact that you have no clue what you are talking about though.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

Spector and MJ both had hits well after their erm, "eccentricities" became well known. Ike too.

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

MJ took fucking MacAuley Culkin to the Grammys for chrissakes

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah but those were real artists not teeny-bopper empty suits like Chris Brown so you can't compare them anyway.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

since we're clearly still playing the mug's game, let's try to imagine how michael's career might have been different if he was arrested for sucking off a little boy when he was 19.

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah but those were real artists not teeny-bopper empty suits like Chris Brown so you can't compare them anyway.

Dude, you should have quit about fifteen posts ago. Your idiocy is showing.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

i think he was mocking - miccio's last post otm

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

don't think anyone's mentioned jerry lee lewis - which is an (admittedly dated) example of scandal taking down a talented pop career for good

iatee, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

you have to remember we're working in a context where ike turner's done just fine

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but if picture of tina turner beaten half to death had been plastered on the cover of people magazine or whatever, might be different?

iatee, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

Spector and MJ both had hits well after their erm, "eccentricities" became well known. Ike too.

Jackson takes Culkin to the Grammys: 1991/1992
Jackson is accused of molesting children: 1993

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

also what is really the timeline on Spector become well known for his troubles (beyond the usual "perfectionist"/"difficult" tags that are easy to initially handwave when someone is hugely successful and revered)? because he's produced only a handful of projects since the early '70s, none of which approach his early chart reign.

blame it on the HOOS got you steenin' loose (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

anti grammy terror ?!

depressed (usic), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

Is Miccio da croupier? A light shines.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway obv none of these people is a good direct comparison for Brown (a lot were at the end of careers, some of their crimes were a lot less heinous, some were more heinous, and yeah some have left the country--big fucking whoop, most of them are hideously unattractive.) My only point was that it is well within the realm of reason to see Brown having a(nother) career at some point. Will he be completely unscathed? No. Still making money in the entertainment biz (don't forget guys he's a triple threat)? Maybe.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

singing
dancing
[tacky unfunny joke redacted]?

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't he in Stomp? I guess he mostly danced in it.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

No wait it was Stomp The Yard! And This Christmas! Plus some work in the O.C.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

oh wait, I remember "This Christmas" now, wasn't it basically "The Chris Brown Story, Only At Christmas"?

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

he's also responsible for such great lyrics as "we've only got one night to dance forever" and "you're in disturbia"

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, he was the "band geek" (as in marching) in a couple episodes as Marissa's sister's love interest. I am ashamed.
