no this is terrible, it means Luke V and Mike P have been telling the truth all these years about top-notch work just sitting around unreleased
― ugh (lukas), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 01:49 (twelve years ago)
there's more and he's not sharing, let's just go in and TAKE IT
oh i guess that's what the tank is for hmm

He's like a Picasso of electronic music, except he keeps 80% of his music to himself. UGH... Perhaps his DATs will be raided once he croaks.

it's the one they had that kickstarter campaign for:

i guess one of the backers put it on youtube.
― koogs, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 09:00 (twelve years ago)
don't really know the whole story but at this point why doesn't Warp or whoever just release this and get it over with?

Caustic Window - G1 - 101 Rainbows (Ambient Mix)
:O
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 09:31 (twelve years ago)
"An ambient track. This was a reject from SAW85-92 and is unspeakably lovely. A monophonic synth weaves around soft flutes to devastating effect. The synth filter opens & closes to emphasise the riff at certain times, & the flute goes freestyle towards the end. Metallic percussion invades the song at times complementing the groovy momentum gathered by the main riff."
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 09:33 (twelve years ago)
Caustic Window - C2 - Squidge In The Fridge is also really great.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 09:40 (twelve years ago)
Hm. I wasn't too interested in this "lost" record, but it's excellent. Interesting how good it all sounds after so long.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 10:05 (twelve years ago)
There's a good quality zip - well, enough for these ears at least - out there if you G00gle it.

I know what you mean, I can get a bit offended sometimes when the Roland Kayn thread goes more than a few days without someone waking it up

I'm glad this is out there but it's weird no one's talking about the ethical aspects of its release. I got into an argument with a Pitchfork writer on Twitter who was criticizing RDJ for "forcing" fans to pay thousands of dollars for this instead of, I guess, putting it out for free or normal purchase when it became clear that it was going to be made available anyways. Which I think is a weird criticism, given that he didn't want this to come out in the first place and couldn't really be said to be "forcing" anyone to do anything.

It's also difficult to untangle fact and fiction as usual...
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 14:39 (twelve years ago)
yeah, I STILL can't shake the feeling that this is some elaborate hoax
the record is good in any case
― original bgm, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 14:59 (twelve years ago)
really dig 'fingertips', SAW 85-92 caliber track imo
― original bgm, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 15:08 (twelve years ago)
yeah, how can we verify this is really RDJ and not a hoax? (haven't had a chance to listen to any tracks yet btw).
And when the fuck is he releasing new material?

― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 16:01 (twelve years ago)
yeah, I don't have any legitimate doubts, it's just a very strange way for a record to be released. more like a funny feeling I can't shake compounded by the whole 'RDJ constantly making stuff up for ~20 years' thing
xp lol
― original bgm, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 16:06 (twelve years ago)
same seller as the $20k caustic window lp. wonder if the same deal will be struck?
― koogs, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 16:06 (twelve years ago)
My first impression was that this is actually a brand new record released in the most obtuse way he could think of. I mean it's probably not true but it's amusing to think about.

would also be great if someone just read the interview with the mu-ziq guy, deliberately created music similar to what paradinas described, and that's what everyone is currently freaking out over. super improbable but RDJ gets my conspiracy theory pseudo logic going.

A couple of those Caustic Window tracks have been released before, no? I have "Cunt" on a comp I bought in 1994, and the version on that Youtube playlist is the same one (and it still sounds as awful as it did 20 years ago). I guess the rest of the tracks could still be fake, though...
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 17:06 (twelve years ago)
There's a number of drum parts, synth settings and melodic styles that are absolute classic RDJ trademarks circa 1990-1994 on this. Also the two comp tracks. If these are fake, then this whole board is fake; each thread produced by some form of music nerd AI. Nothing to see here.
― octobeard, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 17:38 (twelve years ago)
a couple of the tracks have been released before, no?
yeah, i believe two of them came out in the 90s on compilations.
I guess the rest of the tracks could still be fake, though...
nope

i really hope these make it to the 'net

― diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 21:17 (twelve years ago)
i hope not, because i've been listening to it (and analogue bubblebath 5) for the past 10 years!
― clouds, Thursday, 19 June 2014 13:00 (eleven years ago)
This isn't the first time he's been accused of being in on a hoax. It reminds me of the Black Devil Disco Club reissue from a few years ago. This writer seems convinced it actually was a hoax and seems kind of angry about it on this review for the follow up album. http://www.allmusic.com/album/28-after-mw0000573787
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 19 June 2014 14:26 (eleven years ago)
I'm thinking it was actually wise not to release this in 1994 because it really does sound super similar to a lot of stuff he was doing at the time. Though releasing under Caustic Window probably would have alleviated a lot of that
― aaliyah papi (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:00 (eleven years ago)
how have I never heard of Black Devil Disco Club before???
― macklin' rosie (crüt), Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:15 (eleven years ago)
Ugh that Black Devil review is so obnoxious. What a wanker. It's a great album!
― everything, Thursday, 19 June 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)
Some of us were listening to Black Devil Disco Club well before Rephlex reissued it.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 19 June 2014 21:19 (eleven years ago)
But we also thought there was no way it was from the 70s either.
