Artists You've Written Off/Pointedly Ignored because of their name

Trying to sound literate by naming your band after an author probably 50% of middle schoolers read: C/D. Also, trying to imply that your shitty indie band is the musical equivalent of a sober, clear-eyed political critic and one of the greatest essayists of all time -- not only highly unlikely, but highly un rock-and-roll even if true.

I had assumed that it's a juvenile "dirty bitches" pun rather than evidence of an interest in marine conservation, given that's how about 75% of the world would say those words in English, but i may be wrong.

I feel like there were a few other bands in the mid '00s who were heavily influenced by their high school summer reading lists, but the only other examples I can think of right now are shitty local bands.

I don't think even yr absolute standards are always a bad idea to draw from, e.g. I like the names of both Rollerskate Skinny (Catcher in the Rye) and the Boo Radleys (To Kill a Mockingbird). But "The Orwells" is just so lumpen and ham-fisted.

I agree, and those are great examples. But when done wrong it's just a sad disaster.

Although it's neither a truly bad name nor a truly bad band, I kind of knew exactly what Perfect Pussy was going to sound like, and I just recently confirmed it.

The Orwells are stillI IN middle school iirc so give em a break. Almost all band names are really stupid if you spend more than a few seconds thinking about them so I maximize efficiency by spending no more than 1.1 seconds. I have never gotten to the end of ...and you will know us by the trail??? but I assume the ending is satisfying

I don't know, I guess it's mostly in my head, but I tend to avoid bands that jump on what appear to be band name trends; like if you formed some time in the middle of the last decade and have the word "Wolf" in your name, you were written off/pointedly ignored.

Is adding one or more redundant letters to a word/name the new having the word "Wolf" in your name?

I have never heard of Draag Me, but in their possible defense (?), it could (in theory at least) be a bilingual play-on-words: “draag me” means ‘carry me’ in Dutch.

whether that would makes it a “better” name or not is another matter

i file the letters thing alongside all caps or all lowercase and symbols in names, it's a sort of #vibe and maybe a generational marker. it rules sometimes (spellling) sometimes it's really annoying (wavves)

i would not listen to a band called the psychedelic porn crumpets however well recommended. i have also avoided the front bottoms

i know of at least two bands called slaves, fuck them

archers of loaf isn't a boycott-worthy name but is certainly a not-particularly-interested-in-checking-out-this-band kind of name

it's bullshit like fun. and portugal. the man that really pisses me off. i contend that 00s hipsterdom produced more awful names than the combined efforts of every other scene and era in the history of popular music

There was a Toronto band named "hhead", forerunners to Broken Social Scene, who I think of as pioneers of the unnecessary superfluous letter trend. A friend of mine took them as a sign that all the good band names had been taken (30 years ago!).

They were also pioneers of the lower-case letters only trend.

xp You missed out - it became one of those things where you didn’t think about the actor anymore when you heard the band’s name.

For a good while I avoided FKA Twigs cause it sounded like the name of a lesser Warp act that peaked with being on a label compilation. Eventually heard stuff by her and didn't regret not having heard her earlier.

As a rule I shy away from bands that have names which place "the" between a pair of otherwise unrelated words:

Ha Ha The Moose
