Understand the concept, but hate the term "late capitalism," with all its totally unsupported implications that the Marxist revolution is in fact right around the corner.

intheblanks, Saturday, 31 May 2014 00:12 (twelve years ago)

i relate to being annoyed by it but feel like pointing fingers at something "hacky" is a misapplication of the critique and ends up looking like protesting too much.

What are the post-Y2K punk cool pizza places for each city?

Philadelphia: Pizza Brain
DC: Comet Ping-Pong

Haven't been there but based on this thread:
Portland: Ned Ludd?
Brooklyn: Roberta's?

Is Mellow Mushroom as close as your city gets?

That's actually the last show before the place closes down, so OTM.

I'm sure those bands would bore me but that's a great picture imo

ironic tmnt references are kind of annoying though because tmnt was pizza punk to begin with.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Saturday, 31 May 2014 14:22 (twelve years ago)

how badly do you think they're gonna screw up the pizza in the michael bay movie

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 May 2014 14:24 (twelve years ago)

it's gonna be a panini or something

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 May 2014 14:24 (twelve years ago)

it'll have prawns & rocket on it & will get smothered in cgi ketchup

mikelovestfu (wins), Saturday, 31 May 2014 14:28 (twelve years ago)

"prawns & rocket" uh not unless michael bay has become an anglophile

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 May 2014 14:29 (twelve years ago)

which would be pretty amazing to see tbh

I think pizza's appeal as a lol signifier is a little different than "OMG BACON" etc. although it has the potential to be dragged to that level. The bacon craze is actually about eating bacon -- giving in to carnal desires under the guise of "comfort" food. There's an irony to it, but the irony is pretty weak, and mostly just a cover for consumption. The pizza thing is more meta -- it's not about eating pizza but about 80s/90s pizza marketing, which, with the benefit of distance, seems to promote a crazed, junkie-like state of existence of pizza-seeking. Pizza is carnal yet not flesh, a simulacra of meat. It is quasi-sexual, it is appealing yet vaguely disgusting, it is to be consumed in orgiastic amounts. It drips with sweaty grease, its cheese melts away from us, never quite satisfying us. The marketing of this is both humorous and horrific, e.g. the hyper-stimulated kids in the bagel bites commercial.

Anyway, soon enough it will probably just be another "OMG Bacon" type thing because capitalism has a way of reappropriating and resanitizing everything that is appropriated from it.

i also think pizza just has this childlike universal appeal. kids go insane for pizza. so it's part of that rock-reclaiming-youth thing.

tbh, everyone goes insane for pizza. its probably the most universally liked thing there is.

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 May 2014 21:17 (twelve years ago)

it really is true that even when pizza is bad it's still p good

Can someone replace the triangles in the ALTERED ZONES thread title with little pizza slices?

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Saturday, 31 May 2014 23:56 (twelve years ago)

if you don't eat meat bacon may well be 'just salt' but for most of us bacon includes 'bacon'

yeah bacon is irreducible. the fundamental particle in a nucleus we all orbit around. we do it all for the bacon.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Sunday, 1 June 2014 15:05 (twelve years ago)

The band, who perform pizza-themed covers of Velvet Underground and Lou Reed songs, were pelted with beer at Nottingham's Rock City after performing for just 15 minutes.

Isn't that his whole set?

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Sunday, 1 June 2014 15:05 (twelve years ago)

great post hurting :)

also think the pizza fetishism runs parallel to the "beach" craze of however few years ago. tongue half in cheek and at the same time guilelessly dorky enthusiasm for eterna-childhood totems most suburban americans will agree are great. pop-punk in spirit, beholden to the ramones. we like: beaches, burgers, parties, chucks, ripped jeans, pizza, girls, boys, kissing, etc. plus TMNT yeah.

Oh yeah, def see parallels to the beach thing. Which, also, I think, started out with some subtle overtones of horror, apocalypse, maybe in part connected to anxiety about global warming.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Sunday, 1 June 2014 16:55 (twelve years ago)

Also in re prior post I think that's why "Gimme Pizza" slowed down work so well, because it's like slowing down the track reveals the "hidden message" -- these *cute* children are actually ravenous monsters.
