Bill, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

I don't even remember, so I'm sort of guessing:

Cinerama, Disco Volante. Manic Street Preachers, "So Why So Sad" single. Kylie Minogue, Light Years. Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack. St. Etienne, Places to Visit.

I'm certain those aren't even right. My dad bought me the New Art Riot EP, do gifts from others count?

Ally, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

1. destiny's child, survivor

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

In order for this to be a question Ned can properly answer, it needs to be changed to: What were the contents of the last 5 huge cardboard boxes of CDs you bought?

Ally, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

1/P.I.L.-'second edition' 2/Avalanches-'since I left you' 3/Cocteau Twins-'stars and topsoil' 4/Smith and mighty-'DJ kicks' 5/Elliot Smith-'either/or'

Michael, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

I@m not sure i can quite manage this due to technical difficulties. But, last tuesday was Idiology by Mouse on Mars and godspeed's Lift Yr Skinny Fists. The week before, I got Pre-Millemin tension by Tricky, KLF's the White Room, John Coltrane's Giant Steps, Herbie Hancock's HeadHunters, Miles Davis' In A Silent Way, Entroducing DJ Shadow, Ladytron 604, Aphex Twin Selectet Ambient 1 and an Orbital CD, the latter of which was copies to mp3 and returned to HMV. Now I am very poor. Ah, the phyrric joy of bulk student loan installments!

*clambers around huge stacks of CDs in the living room, narrowly avoids being crushed...*

(voice dimly echoing amongst the columns): "...should i mention the no-man stuff i got recently or not or..."

[Cue Marcello: "How HORRIBLE that he's just talking about SIZE again instead of leading proletarian revolutionaries to burn down a Starbuck's..."]

The Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Hey Dirty Vicar, just saw Sigur Ros the other day, and all they had was t-shirts! I feel ripped off! That definitely would have been on my list if they had it at the gig! Dammit!

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

You're a brave man to admit the third above, Geordie. The man I always try to *avoid* comparing Paddy Kingsland to, I mean :).

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Could be forgetting something, but anyway..

Neil Finn - Nil Fun

Gorillaz

The Fiddleheads - live (my brother in law's band)

Folk Implosion - One Part Lullaby

and the fifth most recent could be one of three (mind is gone); The High Fidelity Soundtrack, Matador Records 10th Anniversary, or Spookey Ruben - Modes of Transportation Volume 2. I should qualify that I put my CD buying on near hiatus due to MP3 'almost too much new music' supersaturation.

It might be more interesting to ask "what were the last five records you listened to?" The answer of course never corresponds with the last five records bought. I've just knocked up a compilation tape for the Oxford Tube on Monday morning, the last five tracks of which are as follows: "Cool Cool Collie" by Hopeton Lewis; "The Music Goes Round And Round" by Henry Hall and his Orchestra, vocal by George Elrick; "Respect" by Rotary Connection; "There Goes Concorde Again" by . . . And The Native Hipsters; and a mix of birdsong recorded by me on Boars Hill at 6:00 this morning and Eric Portman's closing remarks about morality from Powell & Pressburger's "Canterbury Tale." Am yet to decide whether to segue into the Stylistics' "People Make The World Go Round" (album version) or Bomb 20's "Made of Shit" - but may well just leave the tape as it is.

See what I mean? Much more individual and interesting than the expected litany of REM/Elliott/Mouse on Mars/cLOUDDead/Elbow. Yes no no yes?

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 19 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Electroloids - dunno (but it's made by half of Drexciya)
Brian Ferry - Slave to Love, but it came with a free 12" of The Cars 'Drive' and 'Only You' by the Flying Pickets, can't argue with that
Currently on the stereo, thou I didn't buy them:
Manitoba - Start Breaking my Heart (leaf)
Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (electronica remix of The Smiths - There's a light....)
Bobby Conn - Dunno which album, but I'm sure he's bit of a genius?

K-reg, Sunday, 20 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Last five things I listened to? OK:

Just now in work? Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction. Made me extremely miserable except for "Sweet Child Of Mine" and the changeover in "Rocket Queen".

On way into work? Mixtape which - again - seemed to take on a gloomy bent as I recorded it. The Dismemberment Plan's "Spider In The Snow" accompanying my 5 minute walk in.

On the Oxford Tube last night? Various Artists - The Rough Guide To West Africa. And before that Various Artists - Afrique Dynamique. African music seems to be the only thing that can relax me currently. Playing them I suddenly wanted to listen to and write about nothing but this stuff. Then it struck me I couldn't say much about it and I only have 5 or 6 records/tapes of it. When I got back in I stayed up for several hours but played nothing.

Before that? "Fear Of Drowning" a single by British Sea Power, who seem promising enough though not as interesting as the last two minutes of a set I caught suggested (consisting of them beating the stage and each other with branches).

Tom, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Marcello, you have anticipated at least one key element of the new site.

(and then he thrusts forward to "Southern Hospitality" again ...)

Can I kill myself in self-contradiction now?

Robin Carmody, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

5. Basement Jaxx: Eaty (from the gathered admirers I pick Tim Finney becuz online Buffyluv is a treasure to all)
6. Aqua: Aquarius (this is no.six so I do not need to justify: "Candyman" is the gratest song evah written so how can these be any less so)

Mint copy of The Rolling Stones "Some Girls" with the original gimmick cover.
A 2-LP Donna Summer compilation for 25 cents
Another compilation, this one a 2-CD set called "Old School Jams."
