Cretins. It's hard to believe Tom Petty was mentioned in only one line in this thread. Petty & the Heartbreakers -owned- "jangle" in the 80's and 90's. The first CD in his career span box set was called "The Big Jangle." One of the big Tom Petty stories is that Roger McGuinn heard "American Girl" on the radio and said to one of his buddies something to the order of "when did I do that?"

Check out the Feelies side-projects - especially the Yung Wu record.

Also, from Boston, Men & Volts, who alternated between doing a weird Beefheartian thing and really interested pop songs. 21-645 (who had a couple of 45s) are fantastic as well.

Also worth checking out are the Bird Nest Roys and the amazing Verlaines, both from New Zealand and on the Flying Nun label, of course.

The website www.littlehits.com has some amazing stuff, and a new song is added every day...check it!

My goodness, everybody's been so nice with their jangle-rock suggestions. I'd be jangling for the next ten years, but for my current obsession with Glen Campbell The Capitol Years, 1965-1977.

The sad part is, that's a 2 cd, 46 song monstrosity, and I can still name about fifteen great songs that I can't believe aren't on it. How the hell can you have a Glen Campbell best-of without Roll Me Easy? Geez Louise!

The Wygals were an excellent choice.

If you can dig up anything by mid-80's NC band One Plus Two I'd highly recommend it.

I love the Reivers though the production on their Capitol records may sabotage the overall sound. There are moments of brilliance buried in there, worth searching out. "Saturday" and "End of the Day" still give me chills.

If you like Vulgar Boatmen then check out some later period Gizmos stuff, they share members. There were also two transitional bands called The Satellites and Right To Left that Dale and Shadow were in, but they're Indiana obscurities with only self-released cassettes.

The first Gigolo Aunts LP on Coyote was all about the jangle. Every municipality had an REM proxy band. Jersey/West Village offered Winter Hours, they were pretty alright.

Anybody mention The Mice? Whole lotta good, fast janglin' going on there. Their two records were issued on one cd last year called Almost Forever Scooter. The Numero label's Yellow Pills power pop comp would do ya too. Also check Wanna Meet The Scruffs by The Scruffs, esp. the song "I'm a Failure".
I saw the Windbreakers mentioned before. Can Electric Landlady still be found on cd? I'd love to get my hands on it.
